Infographic shows $6.5 billion spent worldwide on MMOs in 2012

The MMO genre is constantly pouring out giant batches of pea-soup-thick data on subscriber counts, upkeep costs, and microtransactions. To sort it all out, the number artists at Newzoo have gathered the most worthwhile info into a friendly infographic, creating a snapshot of the state of the MMO market.

Of the 400 million MMO players across the globe, 220 million chose free-to-play models. The remaining 180 million constitute “paying” players, though Newzoo didn’t elaborate on whether that meant keeping an active subscription, paying once, or purchasing an item through an in-game store.[Omri Petitte]

$6.5 Billion spent on MMO's in 2012 and I'm sure half of that money went to Blizzard and Nexon....the MMO Kings!

Next Gen you consolers will get a Massive Influx of MMO's to enjoy and ALL MMO's are NOT like World of Warcraft so relax!

Guild Wars 2, Tera Online, Planetside 2 are my current favorite MMO's!

Tera is a damn fun game!!

And meanwhile thousands of people starved to death

pandehz4165d ago (Edited 4165d ago )

Most of them are prolly the mmo gamers.

Once couple years ago I forgot to eat the entire day. Takes some training to shape your mmo gaming ways.

landog4165d ago (Edited 4165d ago )

wow, thats almost more than the ENTIRE amount spent on xbox360 games and hardware in 2011!!! and it is WAYYY more than its software sales!

"That means that consumers spent about $6.7 billion on Xbox[sic] games and hardware during the year. "

"The breakdown shows that $2.1 billion was spent on the Xbox console in 2011, and the other $4.6 billion was on games. The entire video game sector in 2011 racked up $17.02 billion. That sounds like a huge amount of money, but it is an 8% drop from money spend in 2010"

PC is crushing consoles lately, and with steambox coming next year, ms and sony need to get on board and do like steam does, or get left in the dust

http://www.slashgear.com/xb...

and thats just mmo's, they aren't counting steam, amazon downloads, direct2draive, gamestop downloads, greenman gaming

crap......thats crazy, i knew pc gaming was doing really good, but damn!

pandehz4165d ago (Edited 4165d ago )

Pc gaming is rocking it.

Most of the pc games online servers are quite active even in half dead games.
The sheer population of pc gamers contribute to that.

About MMOS umm lets just say I bought 3 of em. GW2 and SWTOR and Rift.
Tried a whole bunch of em like Tera, Planetside 2 etc

MMOs have truly found their home on pc's

Sp1d3ynut4165d ago (Edited 4165d ago )

Um...there's literally hundreds of millions more PC gamers than 360/PS3/Wii gamers COMBINED. If you think it's somehow impressive that this figure is "almost more than the entire amount spent on XBOX 360", you need to take a business class or two.

And still no marketing for this :(

Barlos23m ago

Why market something that isn't designed to be sold?

This has GP rental written all over it.

Tacoboto18m ago

They just posted a 20+ minute video about Psychosis and how the game portrays that through Senua.

Regardless of what Microsoft is doing (retweeting Ninja Theory is about as low effort as it gets, and Dashboard Dynamic Themes should've come months ago), Ninja Theory themselves are at least trying.

It's sad though. That new video was a really good behind-the-scenes too, and it just came at such a bad time.

Tankbusta4014m ago

How much marketing do games really need these days? People that play games know when its coming out. I really think the days of the constant tv ad etc are going the way of the Dodo. What scares me more is the lack of "previews" on big video game websites, it only got a few on April 4th and then nothing since.

If sony want their games to be more successful on pc and to sell more they need to bring the games day-one like helldivers 2! , and not after 2 years.

-Foxtrot4h ago

If it's first party (can't speak on Helldivers) then the PS5 should be focused on first in my opinion rather than worrying about 2 versions.

PrinceOfAnger4h ago

Nixxes can help with the development and release the games at the same time..

Tacoboto32m ago

Nixxes takes completed code and ports that to PC. I'm sure they do work during primary development but I like this setup.

PS5 owners are treated as first class by their platform holder, PC players get the final complete version, and GaaS are treated separately. Win-win.

XiNatsuDragnel4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

First party ps5 games need to be ps5 only until 6 months imo because they need to sell consoles still and then focus on PC later.

shinoff21833h ago

I don't see a big deal. The sales also help future development. I'm all in.

thesoftware7301h ago

This makes sense, just now doing it shows how behind and short-sighted regarding PC they were to begin with.

shaenoide1h ago

If they release it day one many will not buy a playstation anymore (me included).

Jingsing4m ago

I'm already not buying a PS5 Pro or PS6 and it isn't day one, They are already damaging themselves.
