Nintendo: New Super Mario Bros. U Has New Enemies, Drop-in Multiplayer, But No 1080p HD

Nintendo is slowly revealing more details about New Super Mario Bros. U, and there's good news and bad news from the latest released details on the official site.

It will still be displayed at 1080p on your TV. It just means that it will be native 720p and then upconverted to 1080p. It is how every single game is done on the 360 and PS3. Although with those consoles, usually the native resolution is lower than 720p.

There will be games that support native 1080p like Rayman Legends and Trine 2 for example.

Next consoles look very weak from a hardware perspective. They may be able to do current gen games in 1080p. however when games get a graphical upgrade next gen, console gamers will be back to square one, 720p gaming at 30fps.

NEARLY every single game. Titles like Wipeout HD and GT5 are rendered in 1080p (though in Wipeout's case, it's sometimes rendering 1280x1080 instead of 1920x1080, but the res is still higher than 720p).

Regardless, I'm hoping more titles take advantage of 1080p on console next gen. Right now, the only place to truly get 1080p is PC.

many, MANY ps3/360 are not even native 720p, call of duty black ops and all cods on ps3/360 are 1024x600

not to mention most ps3/360 games are covered in jaggies, low res textures, screen tearing ect....ect....ect....

lets give the wii u a chance, personally i want it to DESTROY ps3/360 in graphics, i am SICK of look at the same console graphics since 2009, the games actually have mostly gotten worse since uncharted 2, which looks way better than uncharted 3 and imo, best looking console game ever made and the absolute pinnicle of what a 2004-2005 era console can achieve

The lack of native 1080p resolution for Nintendo Wii U entertainment system exclusive New Super Mario Bros U is unfortunate for those who care. But I personally feel that for a side scrolling title of this nature, a big deal does not need to be made over resolution. The Mario franchise has delivered top notch AAA quality gameplay experiences since the beginning of respectable gaming time. A few pixels and moderate resolution change will do nothing to hamper the success, quality or sales of this experience.

Hopefully with the spark of next generation, people learn to appreciate gaming for new experiences that it has to offer. Instead of focusing hard on minor graphical complaints that likely wont be note worthy in the first place. The type of crowd that purchases Mario titles could not care less for the difference between 720p or 1080p native or up scaled for the most part. Drop in multiplayer sounds wonderful though, something to enhance the experience.

When a title that requires a heavier push for graphics comes along, Nintendo will likely meet those demands with top quality support. A beefier titles like Zelda, or Metroid will likely push the platform further. New Super Mario Bros U will be a day one purchase for the future purchase of my very own Nintendo Wii U entertainment system.

On topic, I can work with 720p. I'm not going to dismiss a good game because of it's resolution. Although, I expect them to get more out of their hardware as they progress into the future.

This should be a relatively light game as it's a sidesroller, but if it's 60fps it'll be alright.

Nintendo could probably have squeezed more out of the box if it weren't for the controller... Just saying. ;-)

I care if its 1080p, I think its stupid on Nintendo's part, but I will still play it. I don't know that I will buy it, but I will at least rent it. I have been seeing some really great things about this game just in the past 3 days that have made me more interested in it than I was before. I guess we will see in just a couple of weeks.

This game isnt graphically taxing on the system so i dont see why it couldnt be native 1080p but whatever.. I think Nintendo is still getting their feet wet with this HD revolution & their 2nd wave of titles will look awesome starting with smash bros.. That is whats going to push me to buy a wii u.. Unless Bayonetta 2 does it first..

PS3 can't render games in 1080p, native or not. Most games for PS3 are native 560p and upscaled to 720. Wii U is the only console capable of native 1080.

PS3 has multiple games that render in native 1080p, as well as games that render below 720p and are upscaled. Wii U is basically doing what the PS3 and 360 were already doing and they're 6-7 years old in that it "supports" 1080p, but not every game will be rendered in it.

Haven't we known for months that Nintendo FPT would be in 720 initially. And honestly, what is the point of 1080p on a side-scrolling Mario game? There is none, except that it ups the cost and time of the production. The PS3 has lots of titles that render natively in 720p or 1080p.

Fact is, it's also a 6 year old console but the overall upgrade to the easier to develop Nintendo console launching in 2012 is, once again, turning out to be negligible.

I think the question is more why should Nintendo be allowed to release a console doing the same tricks 6-7 year old consoles were doing and getting a free pass on it.

If this game was made for just the Wii U Pro controller, the game would of been in full 1080p native. BUT since this is using the Wii U gamepad. There is a reason WHY this game is not in 1080p native. It has nothing to do with the system specs itself. It's the fact that the system will be rendering out on the Gamepad controller. If this game was set in 1080p native and streaming to the controller itself. The game would run into a lot of FPS issues. There are older articles that speak of this aspect. Am i really the only one who remembers this or follows along with Nintendo and not just blind hate?

Its one of my paid off games. As long as its fun 1080P can kiss my ass. The features are what makes the game for me. Resolution and the like are nice toppings. Speaking of features.... this game would be great with online multiplayer. Some of us will never get to see the glory of 5 people actually playing this game together these days without online to fill some seats.
