Tody’s Take: Please Ignore Dishonored Hype, It’s Not Worth It

An eGamer journalist explains why you should avoid the Dishonored hype, and believes it is harmful and isn't worth it.

Not even going to bother reading this hot mess of an article, Dishonored is an amazing game. It's not getting fake praise like Skyrim or GTA4 did, the reviews are legit.

dishonored is a VERY good game but its not worth the 60 bucks now.

A 6 hours campaign is not worth 60 bucks (and yes with all the charms,paintings,runes and shrines discovered)

No one read the article. He doesnt say the game is bad, he is saying that too much hype can ruin the game. I hav tried to keep my expectations in check because i want to compare it to bioshock, which would ruin anything. So far though, i love it.

You aren't even half way through the game yet. Think the golden cat is mission 3-4 out of 9.

Yeh it reeeeally depends on how you play too. If you're the type of gamer that loves stealth with a touch of ocd then it's a long game.

Thats good to know. I purposely kind of stopped playing because it was beginning to feel like i was flying through (stealth route with a bit a violent fits)but really enjoying dishonored so far

I am glad that people are enjoying it, but honestly, I am getting sick of every game made being a first person game. That is what killed this game for me... Well, that and Bethesda's PS3 track record... BUT that is another subject entirely!

EXCEPT that the first person view actually added to the gameplay and immersion and Bethesda the developer, who has no involvement in Dishonored, has the bad track record.

I have seen so many FP, and FPS games of late. I think I am numb and bored of the games. My friend has it, And I might try to borrow it from him just to see it.

Personally I've had more immersion from third person games then first person.

I am not saying the game is not good, or great in some eyes, but these first person games are just over saturated the market for me.

So instead of naming the article something like "Overhype may hurt Dishonored" he goes and names it something that will get people riled up and then admits in the first paragraph that he is always dishonest and sensationalist. This is why nobody takes gaming journalism seriously. Because "journalists" act like little attention seeking kids sometimes.

Where on earth did I admit I am always dishonest and sensationalist? I simply said, with my *columns* (emphasis on columns, as in personal opinion pieces) I like attention grabbing headers.

It's an opinion piece.

Part of the reason I gave it that header is to see exactly the kind of reactions I'm getting. If I named it "overhype may hurt Dishonored" people would simply nod and move on. This way, I get to interestingly see how many people don't actually read articles and instead just look at the header and think they know the whole subject matter. Without even giving a care for the reasons behind it.

And the other reason is of course because I feel the column message is important.

To be honest, regardless of disagrees, I largely ignored the game two seconds it was announced.

I'm just not a fan of first person games. Hate that they've just about taken over everything.

Yeah, why would anybody want to play a game from the perspective of the protagonist that you're playing as?

To me, nothing is more immersive than staring at my character's backside all day long. In fact, when I leave the house, I always attach a camera about 4 foot behind me, and then I set up a monitor to dangle in front of my face.

That way I can always live life from the 3rd person perspective.

I just don't like the direct, from behind the eyes, perspective. Same way I don't like always over the shoulder 3rd person. People just don't understand how overall limiting it is.

The ps3 version of Skyrim made me not buy this game. Bad enough skyrim was my first Bethesda game ever. I don't care how good this game is. Anyone affiliated with Bethesda i'm not buying their games till it hits bargain bin prices. You make half assed games, i'll give you half assed money not respect.

good game but not any better than Deus Ex in my opinion. or Riddick for that matter. 2 stealth optioned games I compare others to. The hype to me is over the top.

I'm just about finished with the PC version. The length is fine, and it's an absolutely great game. People need to buy this game, although I recommend the PC version over console.

On the topic of the PC version, options aren't quite as generous as those seen in Borderlands 2, but what makes the cut is still wholly welcomed. We have the ability to crank texture and character detail up to high, whereas the console versions are stuck at an equivalent to its medium settings. This makes a huge difference to clarity on anything from the dials on boats, to the chipping and moss patterns on the stone pillars around the citadel. Clothing on characters for both 360 and PS3 versions can take on an approximated look when put side-by-side with PC, however, while details for minor objects like giant batteries or floor textures can remain the same regardless of setting.

Bizarrely, textures on 360 look more compressed than on PS3 at points. At its most prominent, we see crude bands of green and purple play across surfaces which are otherwise perfectly clean on PC and PS3. To put this into perspective, we have the 360 version installed to its HDD, while the PS3 plays off its 20-minute mandatory install. Even after all assets have finished loading up, we still notice this strange artifact over specific objects on the 360 version, such as the metallic interiors to boats or the inside of Corvo's red mask.

Other improvements on the PC side include a field-of-view slider. This can be ramped up to 85 on PC, but remains set at the console value of 75 by default in our captures, just to keep everything in frame. A toggle for turning on light shafts is available too and curiously, there's also means to add shadows for the swarms of rats that lurk the islands. No doubt this proved too much for the 360 or PS3, especially once these creatures start swarming en masse around corpses and so it evidently didn't make the cut.

Because the console version looks considerably worse, has an inconsistent framerate, and most importantly I found it a game where you need to be very perceptive of your surroundings; i.e. looking all around and vertically throughout the game. This was a chore on the 360 compared to the ease in quickly assessing the best route with the mouse as your basis of control. Furthermore, I can't tell you how many times throughout the game I had caused a guard to be suspicious and quickly dashed away to an area of safety. That level of control and fluidity in the execution just wasn't possible using a controller.

good quality across all platforms for the same game, possibly technically better on PC. I don't want to spend time tinkering with settings. The graphics are good enough on consoles, frames are fine, the game is playable.

The only reason I'd recommend the PC version over the console one is PRICE but that is temporary..

Great game though it's not open enough. If you are on mission 7 or 8 you can't travel back to the map for mission 3 for example. If the map(s) had been more like AC or GTA then there would of been so much replay value just messing around with the guards. I guess you can reload saves but it's not quite the same
