Far Cry 2 Devs 'Worried' by PS3...

Sony's complex PS3 hardware is a 'nice fit' for Ubisoft's ambitious Far Cry 2 - but developers Ubisoft Montreal admit that compromises have been made. "We were somewhat worried by some of the reported high complexity of developing for the PS3", reveals Tech Director Dominic Guay, "but the raw processing power is impressive".

After a slew of delays, and some unfavourable comparisons between 'identical' Xbox 360 and PS3 ports, it seems developers are finally getting to grips with Sony's machine. "We made sure we had a group of programmers that were not scared by complexity and had a large console programming experience to work on the initial PS3 R&D of Dunia (Far Cry 2's graphics engine). At that point, we didn't know what to expect."

Very good read. It seems like things that were thought to be useless this generation are turning out to be a good thing (Blu-ray, HDD). I wonder how many more developers will find the PS3 feature helpful in the coming months.

mesh15920d ago

Any 1 remember turok ? im waiting for the best titles being released on my console and will fun smoother on my console as ive seen in the past gta4/too human/farcry2/alanwake/gears of war 2 and many more

hazeblaze5920d ago

The title probably should have read "Far Cry devs impressed by PS3"... that seems to fit the tone of the article a lot better.

wageslave5920d ago

Did you read the whole article or just the cherry-picked passage above? See, if you read the article, you'll know that the title is correct, and reflects the intent of the artile.

What has happened, is the article has been cherry-picked to reflect the world-view of the submitter.

Read the whole thing, they mean to say that much R&D was required to reach an equal port of Xbox 360. So, the budget for the PS3 version will be higher, while remaining equal in performance.

Remember, that has always been the issue. Not "Can it be done?" But "Can it be done with equal effort". And the answer is clearly no. What does this mean (IMHO); fewer 3rd parties will want to make ports to PS3.

Kleptic5919d ago

Wageslave...you attempt to remind people to read the whole article...and then throw in the 'to make it equal with the 360'...which is something you completely made up...

there was no reference to the 360 in this article whatsoever...only references to the PC version...not that the PS3 version was the same, worse, or better than the 360 counterpart...

you ruin your own credibility when you tell people to read an article, and then blatantly make stuff up to support what you would like to believe...

blusoops5919d ago

Wageslave just got OWNED by Kleptic! Nice one Kleptic...more bubbles for you!

Kleptic5919d ago

haha...I guess...its kind of funny...This article menions 3 things the PS3 has that other consoles do not...an incredibly powerful processor...a high capacity medium...and standard local disk storage...all of which 'make our lives easier', according to the devs...all 3 of those are something that the 360 does not have, its advantages remain elsewhere...

just makes him saying 'to achieve an equal port to the 360' even more humorous...

wageslave...please show us the article that does have these guys pointing out what they like about the 360...it sure isn't this one...and it wasn't in the interviews about the game last week, of which are from Gamespot...if anything the technical info mentioned in this article points to the 360 not really being a machine that will handle an engine like this very well...with a focus on immense processing requirements, and large amounts of data streaming...that is definitely a place the 360 doesn't exactly shine...

sonarus5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

why do these fanboys choose to reamin in the gamerzone. I mean if you want to stick with your 360 even though from the looks of it, you will be missing out on some of the greatest games of 08 then fine because in your eyes the greatest games are on 360. But if you think you can come here and state points to prove your point you are foolin yourself. PS3 has more games and it is already spreading its wings to show its power and no signs of slowing down yet. Unlike the 360 which pretty much peaked with gears of war 1 would be interesting to see how much farther gears 2 can push. Msoft did a lot of things right and sony did a lot of things wrong but at the end of the day it all boils dwn to games and sony packed all the technology in their box to push the transition to next gen as far as they could. Maybe blu ray was put in there for selfish reasons but at the end of the day it is still being embraced by devs

LJWooly5919d ago

I think the difference between Gears 1 & Gears 2 will be the same as the difference between Halo 2 & Halo 3. In other words, minimal.

No, I don't think the 360 has peaked in terms of success, but in terms of hardware potential, it just about has.

The problem is that the 360 was built for now, and not the future. The future is something both Sony and Nintendo were looking to when they gave birth to their respective consoles. That's something microsoft failed to consider, and they're most likely going to pay for it sooner or later.

f7ss15919d ago

i realy pumped to play this game, i hope it has mouse and keyboard support on the ps3

Daishi5919d ago

Good job sonarus, not only did you bash fanboys you completely trashed someone elses system. I'd call that a double standard if anything.

gonzopia5919d ago

"We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems."

That statement denotes that, yes, while they had to do quite a bit of R&D to get to know the system, they were happy about it's capabilities and feel they can now easily make the port. The issue here is that developers need to spend some time learning it - and they don't want to, because time is money. If the Blu-Ray and the impressive processing power of the Cell make it possible to do things that the 360 cannot, this extra R&D time may be worthwhile for devs who would otherwise be hesitant... especially considering the larger numbers of sold PS3 units.

...only time will tell, however.

sonarus5919d ago

lol i didnt even come close to trashing the 360. I stated facts the way i see it ps3 is on the rise increasing the margin by which it outsells 360 world wide and reducing the margin in NA. Its been over a yr and we havnt seen a 360 game that looks better than gears. Not to say 360 cannot surpass gears but if it does it surpasses by a minimal margin. Ps3 on the other hand still has untapped power with uncharted not even using half of the ps3 power. i said great games are a matter of opinion so if you feel 360 has better games than 360 the cool thats your opinion but if you try to say it here i can prove you wrong. I didnt bash the 360 i jst stated facts. When fanboys talk reckless i gotta check em that simple

antoinetm5919d ago

even if small companies dont want to take the ps3 risk, its for the best because high costs and high risks will lead to some unexpected jewels being released on the ps3. (and crap too, like lair, but thats part of the deal)

bring KZ2, GT5, FF13 and the others!

think of it as natural selection.

TheMART at Xbotkings5919d ago

Money is a determining factor. Third party developers would much rather develop for the lead console in terms of an installed base, for those looking to make a sure profit. Whether a port to a rival console is to be considered or not, most of them would be wise enough to take a safer risk when it comes to exclusives.

antoinetm5918d ago

money isn't always the determining factor. Unless you refer EA, Ubi, Capcom ...

Economic sense also involves personal preferences and the gains that an individual gets from engaging in a specific activity.

Insomniac have their reasons to remain exclusive and so do valve and team ninja. Maybe they have a strong relationship with sony? maybe they want to challenge the ps3? maybe sony paid them more? etc.

I'm just saying that those factor shouldn't be overlooked and that a real artist economic gain is in creation rather than profit.

TheMART at Xbotkings5917d ago

I specifically stated "for those looking to make a sure profit", in terms of the average third party developer (Insomniac, Valve, and Team NINJA are exception developers with great financial backing).

Yes, there are developers looking for critical acclaim whether their titles make profit or not, but most of those already have a great amount of resources to do so as opposed to some of the average devs (Okami/Capcom, Beyond Good and Evil/Ubisoft, ICO/Sony, etc.). Keep in mind, this is a business. Without money, the average development company wouldn't be around, no matter how great of an ambitious vision. That's reality, you have to make money for your company and publisher. Just look at what happened to EA Chicago, Clover, Phoenix Game Studios, FASA, and many others who couldn't deliver sales.

They actually praise the ps3 for having the structure that it has. Not enough Bad PS3 news in 2008 i guess....

Time Lord5920d ago

I was expecting one those lazy dev btching about the PS3 and how hard it is to program for..But it was totaly the opposite, they were full of praise about the PS3 and how powerfull it is.

Here is what they said

""The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player. That streaming bandwidth and disk space is very appreciated. So, in terms of AI, game structure, physics, dynamic time of day, open world gameplay, dynamic weather system, destructible vegetation, all of those things where we had really pushed the envelope technically, they run well on PS3."

"One thing that we realized pretty quickly as we started R&D on PS3, was that the hardware architecture had a very nice fit with some of our technical design decisions. We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems. So while it did require quite a bit of R&D to understand how to use the system correctly, once we started having results we saw that it was a very capable console and that FC2 could run on it."

gEnKiE5920d ago

It is funny though because you know any anti-PS3 kid went in their thinking it was a PS3 bash fest when actually the devs praise the structure of it.

sonarus5919d ago

i am honestly begining to feel bad for the ps3 haters. Not enough bad news for the ps3 is really begining to hurt. Ps3 is catching up to 360 outselling them world wide and blu ray is emerging victorious over hd-dvd and every week the news seems to get better. So they try to force bad news out of anything oh DMC4 takes 30mins to install, oh 360 version is superior because the controls are better. Tisk tisk. Last yr i almost sold my ps3 and i laugh at those who did. I feel bad for some of them two cus am sure their thinkin about it now

90% of devs are complaining about the CELL , Even KOJIMA is having problems with it.Why do you think MGS4 has benn pushed back oveer and over again.Same for killezone and GTA4.The cell is the principle cause of all these delays

Skerj5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Did you read the article? They're obviously not lazy devs to anyone who did, they went out and allocated R&D resources to learn the architecture and from what it seems from that interview it's paying out. They're taking advantage of the SPUs to get the most out of the system and their engine's features.

I could swear when MGS4 was pushed back, it just wasn't done yet. Maybe it was something cell related I didn't see. KillZone's not finished either, otherwise it'd be out I think their issue is making sure graphics and gameplay are up to par with that E32005 trailer. GTA4, ok that one's yours.

In any case the learning curve of the system's architecture is slowly becoming a thing of the past, the same thing happened with the PS2 I don't know why people fail to remember that.

Real Gambler5920d ago

They talk about the cell only ONCE!!!

"We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems. "

Next time read the article before you bring in a totally irrelevant comment here.

Thank you.

bruiser815920d ago

i think a systems complexity to program for adds to the systems life. who knew the ps2 could pull off the beautiful god of war 2 at such a late stage in its life. the fact that the ps3's power still remains shrouded in mystery is a good thing for the system. I just give you a lot to look forward to.

StrboyM5920d ago

@lachance not only are you doofy, your a doofus.

I bet you didn't even read the article....its ok go put your head back in the corner now. leave the rest of us intelligent people to have this discussion.

wageslave5920d ago

@4.1

"They're obviously not lazy devs to anyone who did, "

It has nothing to do with *LAZY* anything. It has to do with Training, Education, Research, Development and Effort and time.

All those things have to do with BUDGETS. This is a business you know.

Marceles5919d ago

you're not worthy of that pharrell avatar.

Skerj5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

@Wageslave

He had "So they're lazy too right?" or something similar in his original heading that he edited out. I didn't edit mine which is why the point of "lazy" was made. So focus your energy on that instead of me, because I already knew that.

Kleptic5919d ago

Killzone 2 was never 'delayed'...it never had a confirmed release date of any kind, and still doesn't...

MGS4 only had windows for release dates...and delays were due to the issues with metal gear online content, and its added features...

LBP has absolutely nothing to do with the cell...and everything to do with absolutely groundbreaking UGC available to a console...it has more distribution abilities than any console game to date...is starting a new trend in terms of online communities...and is only complicated in that regard...

GTAIV was confirmed to be delayed because of multiplatform development...not just the PS3...Some of you remember Rockstar not exactly being thrilled with not having an HDD to work with on the 360...quoting it as 'a step backwards'...remember that?...I figured some of you would forget...

Haze is the only game that is completely getting destroyed by this...its been delayed like 4 times already...first because of exclusitivity agreements, then because of 'needing more polish'...

and yeah...Gears was delayed...Halo 3 was sort of similar to Killzone 2, in that it was never confirmed until the year it was released...a lot of quality games get delayed...its part of the process...but don't forget the PS3 had a ton of excellent 1st party content with zero delays...HS, Uncharted, R&C...all hit their targets without a problem...and are a few of the best games of this generation so far...

undacovabrothe5919d ago

BUT the reason its difficult BECAUSE ITS NEW! OFC its going to be difficult if they dont know how to use it when they get use to it games will be made more efficient with better quality. They stated that they already liked what it can do and it worked nice with their engine so when they make the next game they will spend less money tryn to figure out how to work it and more money trying to figure out what else can we do with it. Meaning bigger better games.

bizi64985919d ago

the cell is a challenge for lousy programmers and a constant subject of anxiety for their trolling buddies like you.

of course, the ideal scenario for you guys is that nobody figures out how to use it eh? that's really why you guys want the ps3 to fail.

unfortunately for you guys, SPUs are tons of fun to code on and tons of reward for good programmers and it seems like there's quite a few of them left in this industry.

I liked 5 and 6 though.

banger88408d ago

If you have a Series X or S, the Xbox 360 version runs at 60 fps with fps boost. It's a shame the remaster doesn't.

isarai410d ago

2 and 3, pretty much the only ones i really enjoyed. 1 was amazing for the time but aged quite poorly. 4 has the elephant gun, all i can praise from any entry after 3 lol

cooperdnizzle408d ago

Ummmm 3 than stop.

Okay maybe two as well. But yeah probably 3 and then move on.

JEECE408d ago (Edited 408d ago )

Far Cry 2. People constantly rant about games now being too easy, holding your hand, having too many unnecessary RPG-lite leveling features, etc. People specifically complain about open world games being too focused on tons of collectibles and "checkmarks" that just waste time.

Far Cry 2 is an answer to all of those complaints. It was made by Ubisoft before they fell into all the traps discussed above (and before they started inserting towers into their games to defog the map). It has respawning enemies, weapons that degrade, and the collectible diamonds are very useful in the game (which you find in a similar way to the way you find shrines in BOTW with a radar system). The map you have is an in game item you pull out while playing, not a pause menu that is unnecessarily detailed. Also the enemy AI and physics are much better than later entries in the series.

It has a mixed reputation because people at the time said it was too hard, the weapon degradation was annoying, and then respawning enemies were annoying. FC2 came out in 2008, so this was before games like Dark Souls and BOTW had come out and made it cool to like these types of features.

XbladeTeddy407d ago

Far Cry 2, the one with the AI that find you through walls and trees, can one shot you from a mile away and have 100% accuracy? That was frustrating not fun because cheap AI.

JEECE407d ago (Edited 407d ago )

Uhh, I mean, it isn't one of these games where once the enemies have detected you they will magically forget you exist because you walked behind a wall or went into a bush. And yeah the AI isn't stormtrooper level accuracy. Again, these are positives, not negatives to me.

To be fair, I'm really directing this at the people most critical of "Modern Ubisoft" or "Modern Open World" design elements. Like the type of people who fawned all over Elden Ring because it had a clean UI because they are so burnt out by the "checkbox" type of open world design.

If you like those types of games, then a later FC game like 3 and especially 4-5 would be more your style.

SonyStyled455d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist455d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled455d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE455d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

Far Cry 2 where your guns never ever jammed until you got into a gunfight is their best? I disagree.

MIDGETonSTILTS17577d ago

I liked 3 more.

The malaria angle was more annoying than immersive.

And, the enemy AI had too good of eyesight to allow any stealth. They’d spot you a literal half mile away, I hated it.

lonewolf10577d ago

Yeah, some weird mechanics for sure, some did really enjoy it, I certainly didn't.

bloop576d ago (Edited 576d ago )

The map was designed badly and an absolute pain to navigate from what I can remember too. You ended up having to go to the same few places all the time and there was a huge inaccessible area between them that you had to go around.

It definitely had the best physics system of the entire franchise, but a lot of the mechanics took the enjoyment out of it.

LordoftheCritics577d ago

It was fun for its time but a bunch of those systems today won't survive a launch weekend.

Profchaos577d ago

I'd say it was their most ambitious and had the best setting to date next to the original island.

But gameplay wise it was clunky and maybe it was released to early if the teams had modern systems to build it on the game would have been much better less corridors more open and less gaurd outposts that auto regen

Knushwood Butt577d ago

How do you use guns when not in a gunfight? Shooting trees?

lonewolf10577d ago

Yes and you could do that for hours in FC2 with a gun and it wouldn't jam, not hard to grasp is it.

I see.

I haven't spent hours shooting trees.

Far Cry 2 may certainly not be the most "fun" game in the series but from a narrative standpoint it definitely is the most interesting of the bunch. FC2 couldn't be further away from the pointless fragfests that the following episodes turned out to be.
