Rant Gaming's Top 30 RPGs of All Time (part II)

Earlier this week G.R. Bradley covered games #30-21 of Rant Gaming’s top 30 RPGs of all time. It was hard deducing the list of 70+ games to a measly 30, and even then the poll results came close.

So here we are, ladies and gents: part II of the top RPGs of all time.

I personally would have easily place Nintendo Wii entertainment system exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles as number 1. Greatest and most epic jrpg that I have played in a decade.

Followed closely by Skies of Arcadia Legends, and Final Fantasy 7

Rated E For Everyone

Carl_Shocker4236d ago

or maybe for you it's because it was on an Nintendo console.

I could think of a ton of RPGs better then Xenoblade...not saying it's a bad game, just theres been better ones out there.

FF7-10, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Fallout, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger

Locksus4235d ago

I wouldn't consider Blue Dragon to be all that awesome. It's a good game and a great RPG for sure but there has been better this generation. Imo FF6 is on hell of a game also and would replace Blue Dragon with Tales of Vesperia.

Godmars2904235d ago (Edited 4235d ago )

Was going to say something about Mass Effect, how both ME1 and ME2 should be lower because they're newer, but really Borderlands shouldn't even be on the list. It had no real story or character development, and was more about stuff than anything.

@Carl_Shocker:
The only reason you're listing Lost Odyssey and especially Blue Dragon is because of what console they were on. Which makes you almost as bad as LX-General-Kaos - who I'm sure is getting paid for his posts!

@Locksus:
Console RPGs is general have been especially poor with few exception as far as I'm concerned. Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3, and ME1 were probably only the only true RPGs this gen. The only ones which advanced the genre. Everything else which was good or decent, whereas something like Oblivion was an open-world sandbox which broke its own narrative because of it's mechanic.

Carl_Shocker4235d ago

...and yet I mentioned FF7-9 and Kingdom Hearts which were Playstation exclusives....how am I as bad when I listed a variety of RPGs.

Jeez....

Locksus4235d ago

I wouldn't consider RDR as an RPG at all. It's a great game but it is not a role-playing game per say but just an open world action game.

I have to say that in all honesty Lost Odyssey is one of the best RPGs of all time. I can't point my finger at one thing that makes it so great but it just so heavily reminds me of the old good RPGs from the nineties.

Godmars2904235d ago

"I can't point my finger at one thing that makes it so great"

And that's my issue with those who regard is as "one of the best RPGs of all time." Past who made it and one cutscene they can't give any real reason, whereas with something like FF7 or Chrono Trigger, there are dozens.

Not saying its a bad game by any means, just questioning its "Greatness" when no proper examples can be offered.

@Carl_Shicker:
I only mentioned the two I had issue with. Games that came out this gen, when this gen has not only been as good as others, and gamers have become heavily divided along brand names. Adopted very asinine mentalities.

Not saying I'm innocent or removed, but considering how LO and BD were received, how they come off as being largely forgotten and written off by MS and Mistwalker alike, I can say that its too much to call LO "the best RPGs of all time." Again, more so when the people saying that can't support it with any real examples.

Locksus4235d ago (Edited 4235d ago )

@Godmars290
You should play it yourself. IF you're into JRPGS that is. Lost Odyssey's music is absolutely amazing. The soundtrack is one of Uematsu's best in my opinion. The battle system is the traditional turn-based system; Some people like it, some don't. I fall into the former category.

The main story of the game is nothing revolutionary but great nonetheless. What makes the story/world so amazing are the little short stories that the protagonist Kaim recalls from his 1000-year life. They're very well written and are always accompanied with touching music.

In short, if you like the old traditional turn-based JRPGS, you'll LOVE this game with almost 100% certainty.

TongkatAli4235d ago (Edited 4235d ago )

FF X, Persona 3 and FF XII are my favorites.

Wigriff4235d ago

Final Fantasy VIII doesn't belong anywhere on a "best of" list anywhere, ever.

stuntman_mike4235d ago

Xenogears is one of my favorites, also wild arms and golden sun.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster Review – An Epic Tale Of Pixelated Portrayals

Gary Green said: We’re finding ourselves in a similar position with the Pixel Remaster edition of Final Fantasy IV as we were with Final Fantasy III since, once again, we’ve received a slightly upscaled, more vibrant port of the original game when there’s already an expanded 3D remake available. As such, we’re playing a game which, even after its long-awaited release, still lives very much in the shadow of its remake.

If only they didn't screw ps4 owners over with a physical release. I'd have ran through this in a heartbeat.

The first one I played, it was the one that made me fall in love with JRPGs and is still my favorite to this day. A masterpiece

^This. THIS!
Stop remaking PS4 games!
Remake PS1 and PS2 games à la FF7R, RE1, Mafia, Half Life style ....
Make Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain etc Remakes happen

darthv7230d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot30d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga30d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B30d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo30d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7230d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror30d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss30d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave30d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia30d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Why does From Software not do ANYTHING with this franchise... It's so sad... Can't they at least outsource it to someone to try a revival?
