Bayonetta 2: A Double-Edged Sword for Platinum Games and Nintendo

Matt Randisi writes, "Regardless of how Bayonetta 2 ended up on the Wii U, the sequel represents just what the new console needs; the more third-party title support the better."

Nintendo is on to something. Can't wait to see how many good exclusives they can get coupled with their first party goodness.

TruthbeTold4253d ago

Skill with a 2 edged sword prevents the user from being harmed by it, as well as deal versatile and serious blows to opponents. Time will tell how skilled Nintendo is on this.

Benjamminkno4254d ago

Nintendo is on the verge of being too risky for third parties. They (might) have one more generation to prove that otherwise.

sway_z4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

I really don't get the backlash Nintendo/Platinum games are getting over this....Sony, and now MS have been doin this for years....

Bayonetta (IMO) is hardly the loss some make it out to be....that being stated, I have a funny feeling this game is going to look and play amazingly on Wii U...a glimpse into what a bit of extra ram can do (for consoles, visually) for a game.

Let Ninty have the game, lord knows they should be applauded for trying to give the Wii U mass appeal across all demographics.

*Last point....I would forever rate Nintendo extremely highly if they managed to get an enhanced GTA V on their platform...that would actually make an impulse purchase for me...at 60fps and in native 1080p ....Ooh baaaaby!!! :)

Definitely last point....

@DarkSymbiote & Godmars290

C'mon dudes....MS were once an embarrassing company to be associated with games in general...but they won the public over!

...and should we not be championing the Wii U as a good change of direction for Nintendo? ....or do we continue to live in the past and resign them to the casual gamer?

DarkSymbiote4254d ago

Basically, people got annoyed with Nintendo with the Wii and they don't want what was a primarily hardcore game to be with a company that gave little to hardcore gamers for so long.

ronin4life4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

Those people are blind to all the great games the Wii actually has. Their "fears" are groundless, and that's the problem.

Venoxn4g4252d ago

there were many hardcore games on Wii, many people just didn't do a reseatch other thing hardcore game doesnt mean shooting and blood

ClimateKaren4254d ago

"....or do we continue to live in the past and resign them to the casual gamer?"

I won't live in the past, but I won't live in the unwritten future either, which is to say that Nintendo isn't going to convince me that they're catering to me just because they've been saying that they are. Especially when the original big feature on this is the tablet controller, which indicates that they aren't done chasing the Angry Birds crowd. When they prove something to me, then I'll start taking them seriously. They have the taste of a few console generations to wash out of my mouth before I go buying a system from them on nothing but a promise.

Bayonetta is a great first step. I'll see what they do with their first year. The fact that it is able to produce better graphics that PS3 and 360 is something too, though the fact that its processor (according to some article a read through here within the last week) may not be equipped to handle as much on-screen action and/or complex AI is not a good indicator. It makes it seem like they're still way too focused on getting by on minimal hardware and hoping the gimmick will pull them across the finish line. Mind you, this thing is supposed to compete with consoles that have yet to be announced. Like I said, we'll see what's up after the first year.

"a glimpse into what a bit of extra ram can do (for consoles, visually) for a game.
"

So many technical ducks...

RAM = Random access memory. It only stores data for applications running. It's still up for the GPU to process everything in 1/30 or 1/60.

Godmars2904254d ago

If the game is little improved over the original much less bad, isn't something that couldn't have been done on the PS3/360, both Nintendo and Platinum are going to get flayed.

josephayal4254d ago

Great for Nintendo maybe, bad for the company, WELL As a fan of Nintendo this is awesome, as a person with an unbiased view this is a terrible idea for Platinum Games.

Moonman4254d ago

Without Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 wouldn't exist. Platinum Games will get beefy marketing with Nintendo as opposed to Sega.

gamer78044254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

This is untrue platinum is already talking to western developers even thinking of making steam games. They easily could have found another publisher to release bayonetta on other platforms. It's just typical marketing speak you have to see through and look at other surrounding statements the company has made.

Beefy marketing with Nintendo is of course true. It will need it.

Moonman4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

This was stated by Platinum Games. I'm not making this information up. Also, the game isn't just being "published" by Nintendo. This game has Nintendo and Platinum listed as the developer of Bayonetta 2 as well.

Quote: "We are not viewing this as a change of platform," ... "We were looking for a partner to create Bayonetta 2 and Nintendo was a strong, cooperative partner that was willing to create and grow Bayonetta 2 together [with us]. As a result the platform became the Wii U."

Willing to CREATE AND GROW....

ronin4life4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

Basically, it was Nintendo and a well funded great sequel, or someone else and a watered down misguided shamble of a game.

Furthermore, Between all publishers capable of "rescuing" this game in all realistic expectation were Nintendo and Ubisoft. I don't think Ubisoft would be willing,(They appear hesitant to revisit their own niche titles) And Nintendo is also currently helping make the wonderful 101 with platinum and is based in Japan. Being the console manufacturer, they also have far more insight into making games for it which will no doubt be shared with platinum to really maximize its potential.

What people don't seem to get is this isn't a new occurrence. Nintendo has been making great CO-OPERATIVE partnerships with various devs especially this past gen. While Sony and Microsoft have been scrambling over each other for exclusive DLC, Nintendo has actually been making MEANINGFUL arrangements and "friendships" with other developers and publishers and gaining their support.

This has lead them to having Two regional power houses at launch: Monster Hunter in Japan and CoD in America, something that took the 3ds nearly a year(MonHun) and the Vita still doesn't have(CoD). Their capacity and partnerships with 3rd parties are emphasized by these 2 games alone, and that doesn't even take the games EA, Ubisoft, Tecmo Koei and many others have lined up for the launch window into account.

So it really is no surprise companies want to work with them, especially over restrictive western DLC milkers...

wishingW3L4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

Bayonetta is their best IP and if they couldn't find the right publisher for it then what new IP can they possibly create to make publishers interested in their games again?

Are they going to keep doing Nintendo exclusives because they don't find a publisher? That's bullcrap and everybody but the Nintendo fanboys know it.

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H91d 7h ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX1d 1h ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H922h ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro20h ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

banger881d 6h ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk771d 3h ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos1d 2h ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris22h ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno17d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.
