PS All-Stars Battle Royal: Is it too much Like Smash Bros or Just Right?

Players can’t help but compare games to other games. One of the largest comparison going through the video game industry of the recent months have been the comparison of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal and Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. These are both games with a similar motive for the player and for that the new PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal is receiving a whole lot of negative attention. Nintendo had started a game so similar to what Sony is trying to pull off; the gathering of the console exclusive characters in a brawl setting to battle against one another. It became a huge hit among Nintendo fans and all gamers alike. Although both games are very much so similar is there a reason to hate PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal past the comparison it has to Super Smash Bros?

I dont even see the argument here, two different games for two different crowds of people. They may be similar but that doesnt mean that either one should receive any hate from fans of the other. :/

HiddenMission4262d ago

Your right they may be similar but they are very different. It's been noted that Seth (ex-Capcom employee) who was very much in tune with the fighting game community is working on PS All-Stars. From what I understand the biggest difference is the depth of the combat and combo structures in PS All-Stars.

It might even be considered for fighting game tournaments.

HammadTheBeast4262d ago

It is. Many big names like Evo are prepping for it.

SilentNegotiator4262d ago

Nintendo didn't invent mashing up characters.
Nintendo didn't invent fighting games.
Nintendo didn't invent mashup fighters.

Half of the levels are ENCLOSED. The fighting style is completely different - you aren't fighting just to throw your opponents off the level.

Army_of_Darkness4262d ago

Fanboy's talk shit and stay on the defensive when they feel their preferred platform is threatened by something that could potentially be better.

Disagrees really i stated facts kids how can you disagree with a fact...people really are clueless...

Ya I agree. All stars has alot of depth. That game is for more core gamers but casuals can play it too.

Brawl is way more casual. Lack of combos, plus campers makes it more casual.

Overall Allstars is for me. I really want to just go into training mode and just learn combos for each of the characters. Then just just go into the match and try to land them for the fun of it. That for me is what makes it so exciting.

Outside_ofthe_Box4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

Yeah I don't get why people need to choose sides. =/

The majority of those that wanted PSA Battle Royale are those that played Super Smash Bros and thought it was a fun game and went "hey this game is fun. it would be awesome if sony had a brawler of it's own." Now we have people hating on SSB for no reason.

Same goes for people hating on PSA for being a SSB clone yet complain that PSA doesn't do this and that like SSB.

Makes no sense.

TheFinalEpisode4262d ago

I haven't played it so I can't say from experience, but from what I've read I like the direction it's taking. In SSB you can win a game by running away the whole time and getting the last kill when everybody is done fighting. In PSASBR you have to go out and get kills.

Anyways if it's too much like SSB, who doesn't want more Smash?

NBT914262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

You cant do that in Smash, you still need to get kills to get points as far as I remember.

For the record, I have the beta and I think its quite a bit different. Its not massively different, I will give that. But its different enough to be able to stand alone IMO.

The combat is slower paced, and there are ways of building AP without actually fighting per se (Parappa can generate his own AP in small doses and Sly can steal AP from players), you build AP to get to level 1, 2 and 3 super attacks, hit players with the super attack to get a kill and point.

There is also more actual tactics to PS All Stars, Radec for instance has his sniper and such weapons that can hit from across the map allowing him to build AP quickly in a corner. And the arenas are a lot better in that they are based on multiple games and its interesting to see the arena change as the match goes on.

I DO think Smash is the more fun game of the two still, but All Stars feels much more like a fighting game with more depth to the combat itself, it just doesnt have the crazy weapons and blasting people off the stage fun that SB does.

@NBT91
You're right! I forgot because I always play stock mode instead of timed. My bad:o

Tonester9254262d ago

After I played the PSASBR beta and realized how different this game is compared to Smash that whole mindset went out the door. This game is the same concept: 4 Player, Platform fighting, console exclusive characters. But the fighting styles in PSASBR are vastly unique due to the characters movesets.

In Smash Bros Brawl I felt like I could play as anyone on the day of release when I bought it at the Mindnight Release at Game Crazy.

Put the game in, selected Diddy Kong, and went straight to work. Maybe because I've played previous Smash games. This also means that Nintendo didn't change much of their fighting formula other than the Smash Ball attacks that I rarely play with.

When I first stepped in the PSASBR Beta I selected Radec. 'Oh **bleep**!' No Bueno! So I gave Sweet Tooth a try and he stuck with me the majority of the beta unfortunately. But the fighting styles of each character is so different that you will not be able to master them so quickly.

Plus PSASBR is a Combo game where Smash isn't at it's core. So it was easier in Smash to beat opponents with any character due to thier heavy smash attacks and Spike moves which was easy to remember.

I can't wait until this PSASBR beta opens up again so I can get my fix lol

Ps all stars is clunky ... I think smash bros is way better

Xperia_ion4262d ago

Brawl was very clunky Melee was just right.

HammadTheBeast4262d ago

You in beta? Cause it,s definitely smooth for me. The net code is also great, and there's rarely any lag,

THESHAUNZY4262d ago

You obviously are ps fanboys just like the rest of n4g.... admit it other than the last of us PlayStations line up sucks. PS3 may have brought the power but as far as developing is concerned it is the worst platform to develop for... I HAVE PLAYED BATTLE ROYAL AND IT SUCKS JUST LIKE LITTLE BIG PLANET GO KART PIECE OF SH** ps3 lost to 360 and Wii lol sukkas

vividi4262d ago

you must feel much better now, congrats to you I hope you sleep well LOL

Hicken4261d ago

So if I call this guy out for being a troll, will my personal stalkers be upset with me?

Or is it okay for this guy to say what he wants- no matter how utterly wrong and ignorant it is- while I have to sit on my hands and read his drivel?

BrutallyBlunt4261d ago (Edited 4261d ago )

Hicken, you can say whatever you want Hicken, just stop mentioning me by name or any indication of me.

Speaking of stalkers, you're the one who continues to follow not only me but CommonSenseGamer. Do you ever listen to yourself or are you just too busy talking all the time?

You're the one who suggest i go after so and so and how i keep picking on you while you yourself will ignore trolls if they are trolling Microsoft articles. In fact you're so dedicated to making sure nobody says anything bad about Sony that you will troll Microsoft articles and comment on anyone who goes after Sony fanboys. Talk about being a complete hypocrite.

Why don't you simply make better use of your 1 bubble instead or scrolling through every topic making sure nobody is trolling against Sony or anything in relation to Sony products? You sure do a bang up job looking like a Sony fanboy. You target trolls that attack Sony but not anyone who trolls Microsoft, and then suggest that i should go after somebody.

This is your game, not mine. You're the one who cares way too much. You're the one who feels the need to monitor every topic. You simply have too much time on your hands.

Hicken writes "while I have to sit on my hands and read his drivel?"

That's the thing, you don't have to. You can simply ignore it or ignore the topic. You don't need to comment on every response you don't like. So take a breather and let the blood pressure go down. It's only videogames.

DigitalRaptor4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

The similarities between the 2 series ends in the concept stage. People didn't have a problem with Mortal Kombat existing alongside Street Fighter did they? So why do they with All-Stars - is it a fanboy thing? and Nintendo don't even own the genre, they just popularised it and made it really great.

The concept - Mascot brawler.

The execution - Different gameplay objectives, modes, combos, defensive play etc.

Disagree with fact haters. I dare you!

miyamoto4262d ago

all depends on point of view. pros and cons

Parappa4262d ago

It doesn't matter. Brawl has the better roster. Battle Royale's roster consists of nothing but 3rd party advertisements (aside from maybe a little bit of their 1st party characters). Sony couldn't even get Snake in their game so they had to settle with the worst character in the Metal Gear universe (Raiden) instead. The game just looks a joke and nothing but an advertisement now. Brawl managed to get Snake and Sony can't even do that. It's an even bigger insult when the devs think that this garbage is actually a love letter to Playstation fans.

TheFinalEpisode4262d ago

Raiden the worst character in the Metal Gear series? Did you not play MGS4? He made Snake look like a pu**y and Snake was still more bad-a** than most characters today!

youndamie4262d ago

Dont talk about Solid like that!!!

nerdkiller4262d ago

hey b careful you might make some ppl mad

PirateThom4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

There's 20 announced characters so far, 4 are from 3rd parties. It's hardly "nothing but third parties".

Also, did you ever think the reason Sony didn't show off Snake is because, and bare with me here, they're going to use the new design from Ground Zeroes?

Reverent4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

EXACTLY^ Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking (Them using Ground Zeroe's Snake.) It's MORE than likely. Especially with Eric Laden accidentally revealing that he was working on a project with David Hayter and Nolan North, and come on, we all know he was talking about PSASBR. So it's pretty much been confirmed that David Hayter will play a role in this game... Well who the hell other than Snake would he be voicing for? People like Parappa need to seriously quit complaining that Snake won't be in the game. He will.

Outside_ofthe_Box4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

Ground Zeroes Snake! Lol for once I won't mind a publisher putting in a character for PSA for marketing purposes if it ends up being Ground Zeroes Snake!

Reverent4262d ago

My god, Snake will be in the game. So shut up about him.

NBT914262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

They seem to be using the newest incarnations of the characters, perhaps he will be in his Ground Zeroes attire... Could also explain why he isnt revealed yet
But yes, I think he will too.

Still, Snake aside, there are characters missing.
Edit - I see Thom above already pointed out the Ground Zeroes thing.

Aceman184262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

your gonna looks pretty silly when Snake is announced for the game lol. we all know its going to happen.

plus out of the 20 characters that have been revealed so far there are only 4 3rd party characters.

dante
raiden
big daddy
heihachi

so please explain to me how this is advertisement for for party games when 16 of the announced characters for from 1st/2nd party games owned by Sony

someone needs to actually brush up on their 1st/2nd party characters. oh and from the list of 20 we have so far if you can name another 3rd party character please go right ahead.

smashcrashbash4262d ago (Edited 4262d ago )

Brawl has the better roster? Just a third party advertisement? Okay let's go through it. Nintendo has two versions of Mario with Dr Mario a character that has no fighting moves and is just another spin off of Mario, ROB the robot a failed peripheral, Ness, Ice Climbers, Mr Game and Watch and Pitt characters that haven't been used in decades and are older then Parappa, Sweet Tooth and Sir Dan , so old that many modern gamers have no idea who they are, three Links when one would have done just fine, Sonic who has nothing to do with Nintendo, Princess Peach, another non fighter, Pokemon Trainer who is just a little kid how throws pokeballs, the driver of the hover craft from F-Zero, three characters Fox, Falcon and Wolf who fight almost exactly the same, FOUR bad guys. Need I go on?

Nintendo has so many characters that were on their systems and they choose to copy and paste, dig up old characters that haven't been used in ages and get a character that has nothing to do with Nintendo in any way at all and when that wasn't enough they added in a peripheral to enhance the barrel scraping. Why not Simon or Mega Man or Maximo? and you keep crying about Dante and Raiden, two characters out of a whole bunch of PlayStation characters. How does PASBR roster consists of nothing but 3rd party advertisements? Are they advertising for Parappa? Or Nariko? Or Sir Dan? Or Drake? Or Jak? Or Fat Princess? Or Sweet Tooth? Or Cole? Have I missed something? Are new games for all these characters coming out soon or something? I don't remember a Medievil game coming out this fall? Or a Parappa game? Or are they making another game with Nariko? Or another Jak game? Or did they announce another Infamous when we weren't looking? And to make your post even more crappy only four characters are third party and only new Dante and Big Daddy are the odd men out. Raiden and Heihachi are PASBR material. Raiden first appeared in a PlayStation game and Heihachi is from Tekken also a first on a PlayStation system. Rant over. *silence*

NBT914262d ago

You wrote all that just to reply to a troll comment?

HammadTheBeast4262d ago

Not to mention that half of the characters in SSB are from Mario games, and the rest are rarely used or irrelevant. It's a good game, but in no way is the roster better than PSASBR's.

StayStatic4261d ago

Oh no you didn't just insult Raiden , why iiii oughhhtah ....

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.

CrimsonWing69533d ago

Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?

It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.

PapaBop533d ago

I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.

spoonard533d ago

I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.

Magatsuhi533d ago

Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.

Father__Merrin533d ago

Yes the power kills spoilt it completely WTH was they thinking you should have hp bar that's it

God of War: Ragnarok Weirdly Makes PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Canon

God of War: Ragnarok has plenty of fun references to PlayStation history, but now fans have discovered a conversation that calls back to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — the crossover fighting game released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Nyxus540d ago

I wouldn't say canon. More like an easter egg.

Deathdeliverer539d ago

That’s interesting. It actually does make it canon lol. He mentioned it in a mainline game. I’d say that’s pretty cool.
