5 Ways Sleeping Dogs Improves On Grand Theft Auto

Kotaku: You could be forgiven for wondering what all the hubbub is about Sleeping Dogs. "Just another open-world crime game," you might think. "Been there, done that, yawn."

I've seen a few commenters ask why writers at Kotaku keep talking about this game—the simple answer for that is that we write about what we're playing, and several of us are playing Sleeping Dogs. That fact alone says a lot about how much fun the game is.

But of course, yes, Sleeping Dogs really is a GTA clone. It was supposed to be a new installment in the True Crime series, but the name got changed when Activision dropped the game and Square Enix took over. But as much as Sleeping Dogs is "just another GTA clone," it also brings a number of its own smart touches to the formula. The results are, in several respects, superior to the game that inspired it.

Here are five ways that Sleeping Dogs improves upon Grand Theft Auto.

Yes, Sleeping Dogs is SUPERIOR to GTA in every possible way. You're welcome GTA fangirls.

I wouldn't go that far. There are many, many things it does better than GTA but it's not superior in every way possible. I'm glad I decided to pick it up on day one. Fantastic game.

Gameplay, Focused Story, and Numerous Small & Empowering Touches are the main ones.

The gameplay (combat) is more versatile and that alone gives it a huge 1up over GTA IMO. It's Yakuza meets GTA based on Batman Arkham City combat and it works very well.

GTA is just too huge / open for me. I need my story to be easily accessible, and I don't like having to drive across the entire map just to get to the next story segment, because when you give me that option I'm going to go on a destruction derby for fun, and completely forget about the missions.

The little touches here and there keep you focused on the game, it's like a little mini game with each chase, and while it doesn't seem like much, it's just an appreciated touch to make the scenes more dynamic and dramatic.

Not when Sleeping Dogs have large areas blocked off that you can't explore at all. It is superior in many ways though..

I took a break from GW2 to watch live video of some PC Gamer playing Sleeping Dogs and it put me to SLEEP!

I then thought "well i have been marathon gaming so i will get proper sleep and watch it again"!

Same Results ZZZZzzzzzzzz

driving and combat is sooooo much better plus the pc version was awesome too(gta4 on pc was absolute crap)

tigertron4279d ago

The combat, the action hijacks, the chance to replay missions and races, improving your skills and health (you could only do this in San Andreas) and being able to shove people in the boot of your car.

i bet activision is kicking themselves over dropping this game. It certainly caught allot of people by surprise by how good it was.

this means another in series, and hopefully, bigger and better.

Sleeping Dogs is to Michael Bay as GTA4 is to Michael Mann...and I enjoy both.

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil36d ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai35d ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing6935d ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle35d ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal35d ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

DaReapa35d ago

No. Square Enix owns the IP.

Abnor_Mal35d ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
