Way of The Samurai 4 features ‘inspired by Demon’s Souls’, says dev

Way of the Samurai 4 is a PS3 exclusive, and it launches in the States today. The game features a neat mechanic that sees wandering samurai appearing in other player’s games, similar to players invading each other’s worlds in Demon’s Souls.

My first response was, "Really?" But... multiplayer? Okay.

Tonally, WotS4 is completely antithetical to Souls games. (In the worst way). Instead of a dark, brooding atmosphere, setting and story, instead of a coherent world, instead of a bleak tale occassionaly broken up by the odd humor... instead of all that good stuff, WotS4 gives us a parade of incompetency. From a plague of mechanical issues to a deep-seated ignorance of Japanese history and Western culture, to a slapstick setting memorable only in that it errs in much the same way as Saints Row 3rd, giving us tons of dialog and scenes that are meant to be "funny," but aren't (at all) due to clumsy animation, dull delivery, and zero dichotomy.

There's a reason you don't see many comedy duos or trios without a "straight man." Humor doesn't work if there's nothing to juxtapose the silly.

So.... I take it you're not a fan?

:P

Bathyj4269d ago

I got that impression.

No, I am a fan. That's the problem. I wouldn't care so much if I didn't like the previous games so much. This game is a -huge- step backward. It's like Age of Empires 3... sure, it's in the 'series,' but it's just so awful ya' try and forget it even exists.

I know right. How about Lords of the Rising Sun by Cinemaware on the Amiga.

Maybe by the author is too young to remember those masterpieces, or I'm too old and have experienced them!

Cosmoplayer84624d ago

For me the onimusha series is the best samurai game ever made!

MWH624d ago

The fondest feudal japan game experiences i had were Samurai Shodown and Onimusha, especially Onimusha 1 and 2, they were the best of the best.

Replay and Investment in Way of the Samurai 4

Bit Cultures writes: Great video games incentivize players to return time and time again. Some games accomplish this through collectibles, a new game plus mode, harder difficulty levels, multiplayer, or different play styles. Bulletstorm, while an absolute raunchy, “arcadey” thrill and one of my favorite games, only witnessed a single playthrough. The mature banter, kill combos and over-the-top moments kept me hooked, but left me wavering after the campaign. Games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas and the Mass Effect series, however, easily garnered second, third and sometimes even fourth playthroughs. There are tons of nuances in these games to bring players back into the digital worlds. Similarly, Way of the Samurai 4, a third-person, hack and slash role-playing game, utilizes many elements from the latter three titles in order to keep players playing. The one major difference between replaying Way of the Samurai 4 and the other grand RPGs, however, is a player’s investment of hours in the campaign. A single playthrough of Way of the Samurai 4 may take up to anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Through creative use of a choice-driven story line, a rewarding new game plus mode and a variety of unlockable items and weapons, Way of the Samurai 4 offers a replayable campaign without the burden of dedicating absurd amount of hours to a single playthrough.
