Xbox 360's last blockbusters: our hopes and fears

OXMUK writes: We published a list of 2012's best Xbox 360 games so far this week, from the sprawling Mass Effect 3 to the tightly wound Spelunky. Here's the inevitable follow-on feature, a selection of this generation's remaining key releases along with thoughts about how they're shaping up.

It's weird how Halo 4 has come on. Literally six months ago, I thought they were going to completely &*!£ it up. Now, it's top of my preorder list.

sikbeta4314d ago

Game looks great, perception of the game changed totally after what was shown @ E3 :)

tehpees34314d ago

Some of the developers worked on Halo originally so I really don't know why it surprises people. Yes some of the team isn't there any more but there are still people who are. They just aren't using the Bungie logo any more.

Its really hard to say "last blockbusters" because Microsoft will support the Xbox 360 even after the Xbox 720 launches. Not much will change, we just wont see the usual 2-3 exclusives a year like the past couple of years.

I'm sure Call Of Duty, Battlefield and a lot of other blockbusters will release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 even after the next consoles are out.

Nice to see Microsoft treat their fans to some epic games this late in the cycle. You could make a complaint that they didn't offer a ton of new IP's to close out the generation, but they are giving us plenty of blockbuster titles and the arcade games have just gotten better and better.

Well to be honest ms now cares more about casual thancore gamers but I remember that wasn't always the case. Their last great year was 2010 and IMO this new ms image will hurt them a lot when they launch their next system. They have gone all kinect on us over the last 2-3 years

Gears
Halo
Forza has replaced fable

That's all ms has offered I hope they launch some new IP but somehow I doubt it. They did hire Phil Harrison so there is hope

They switched some of their focus to attract families and other types of gamer's in order to keep the Xbox 360 alive. The core gamer by 2011 had already bought an Xbox 360. The only way to grow is to expand your base. Sony attempted the same thing with Move. They are also trying to appeal to families with PlayStation All Stars and LBP Kart Racing. They are trying to make Sackboy their Mario.

Microsoft knows who buys consoles at launch, its core gamer's, which is why all their developers have been working on core launch titles for the Xbox 720. They actually have more studios than Sony right now, and all of them have been rather quiet the last few years.

New IP's are all well and good, but that business model isn't one Microsoft adopted right now. They feel new IP's are better to launch a console, and looking at the new IP's that kicked off the Xbox 360, its hard to argue. New IP's late in the generation haven't really sold well at all. It is a business after all.

Microsoft has given the bulk of their core gamer's exactly what they want, Halo, Forza, Fable, Gears, Alan Wake, Crackdown, Lost Odyssey and a ton of other great exclusives. I don't know a single person who has them all, and its not like they've stopped developers from putting "core" games out on the Xbox 360. So most of the time the Xbox 360 is getting the better version of 3rd party games as well.

Would Sony fans complain if they got their blockbuster franchises over and over? I don't think so, I'd love more Uncharted, God Of War, Killzone and Gran Turismo. I guess its all perspective, but its definitely too early to try and guess what Microsoft has up its sleeve, but you have to figure they will push the current Xbox 360 to families and casuals and the Xbox 720 will be geared towards core gamer's, since those are early adopters.

Chunky my man

You are dumb and stupid if you think ms have more studios lol. How old are you 8? Sony owns 15 studios and also have 5-8 2nd party studios get your facts straight

And I hate the fact people saying well ms knew everyone in core gaming community already bought Xbox360, are you kidding me ps2 sold 150 plus million you think core gamers are 60 million? It's not even worth it with you

A lot of people have been turned off by MS and their pursuit of kinect family based system and next time around when Sony launches at the same ime hey will not have the advantage of going out first and wii u will already be out too. You take the first year of xbox360 out and os3 has outsold the xbox360 and that's a fact

Early adapters are not stupid so hey won't rush to buy a system just because it's a new console and this time around the choices are more wii u,ps4 and xbox720.

In my case I bought xbox360 at launch and ps3 at launch but next time I am getting os4 and wii u just because 3rd party games are on every console so you have to look at exclusive content to to me personally the spect of Sony and Nintendo exclusives hold a lot more weight than MS since S has a track record of buying study and turning them into turd. Yeh I am looking at you rare

Blankman854314d ago

Sony does not own those 2nd party studios therefore they don't have them. Thatgamecompany, 2nd party, but now making multiplat games.

Siren304314d ago (Edited 4314d ago )

Whats a os3 and a os4? If your going to call other people dumb and stupid then atleast make sure your spelling is correct.

You are probably correct about the ps3 outselling the 360 if it wasn't for the year headstart but thats mainly because Japan doesn't buy microsoft. Also there hasn't been alot of ps3 exclusives this year, especially triple a titles. Sony has already said this holiday season they are going to focus more on the family games

Shadonic4314d ago

I remember an article where they showed japanese people Sony products that wereent playstations and they didn't even know Sony prouduced them.

Shadonic4314d ago

If ms wanted new ops they would fund it .

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - A Decade in the Shadows

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has been out of action for a decade, so it's time to look back at 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

CoNn3rB281d ago

Sam Fisher is evidently the most skilled stealth operative because no-one has seen him in his own game for years

kevco33281d ago

10 years, in fact. He must be, like, 60 by now?

phoenixwing281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

why make an inspired game that takes effort when you can half ass it with multiplayer gaas games and filler filled assassins creed games?

That question up there is the reason you don't see splinter cell games

zarbor281d ago

Yup, another example that Ubisoft has no idea what they are doing.

MIDGETonSTILTS17280d ago

The entire mark and execute system belonged in another game.

It’s cool, but the polar opposite to how Sam Fisher initially handled.

The original trilogy made shooting very, very difficult, yet a viable option, which ultimately motivates stealth.

The mark/execute system makes shooting stupid easy, to the point of why would you even bother trying stealth as an alternative?

FYouDad280d ago

Because Ghost is the method fans of the series actually prefer? IMark and execute is never forced upon the player you liiterally never have to bother using it even once throughout Blacklist.

RNTody280d ago

The sad part is that I actually really enjoyed the last game, Blacklist. It may have lacked the iconic voice but the gameplay was excellent, and blended stealth, action and a mix really great compared to most games, where none of the three options felt like the wrong way to play. I really hope they either produce a remake of the original game or a proper sequel.

Rikimaru-00280d ago

Isn't UBI Soft remaking splinter cell.
