Crytek producer on Wii U controller: ‘I’m not sure if I’d give that to my child to play with’

With Microsoft and Nintendo pushing dual-screen technology, Crytek’s producer Mike Read says that it’s all a “novelty at this point” and that he’s wary of letting his child play with Wii U’s expensive-looking touchscreen GamePad controller.

I was no big fan of the original wii controller upon the earth, but the Wiiu controller is an excellent piece of device that will change the way we all interact with many games upon the earth. I do not agree with this man in society

ChronoJoe4298d ago

Are you an alien?

It's just you say 'upon the earth' ... I mean where else exactly? ...

Jazz41084298d ago

No he's a huge Ps3 fanboy from IGN and he says strange things to get a reaction.

user77927884298d ago

@Jazz4108

Whos really the troll here? (1 bubble?)

cuddlemonkey4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

That's not nice! Obviously English is his second or even maybe third language! He's just trying to fit in within society, right ken? Gimmie an Amen!

Hisiru4298d ago

WiiU not for kids: Confirmed.

Nah, just kiddin. It's probably a console for everyone just like any other console. I can't wait to see more about the 3 next consoles.

MaxXAttaxX4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

Is it still only ONE Wii U gamepad per system? That wouldn't be right. At least not for those who want to play multiplayer locally and on equal terms like on every other system in existence.

I won't be getting a Wii U for multi-platform games. I already have a console that's been out for 6 years that does that.

IMO Wii U needs to have plenty of original games and the option to use the Pro controller on every (core)game for me to buy it.
Of course, that's MY personal take on it.

Hisiru4297d ago (Edited 4297d ago )

@NathanExplosion
You bought your PS3 with 2 controllers in the box? Good for you. I had to buy another ps3 controller, just like I will buy another WiiU Gamepad. Is it more expensive? yes, but it's much more functionalities, and thats why youre paying more.

PopRocks3594297d ago

@NathanExplosion

*Shrugs* The Wii U can apparently play those multiplatform games in 1080p resolution. So that's one upgrade.

MaxXAttaxX4297d ago (Edited 4297d ago )

¯¯¯
@Hisiru,

You don't get it.
Both my PS3 and Wii came with 1 controller each, as every system does. But I was able to buy extra controllers which can be simultaneously used to play equally.

What point are you trying to make? You can only use 1(ONE) Wii U gamepad per system. Doesn't matter how many you buy. Everyone else has to play with a Wiimote (or Pro).
I personally hope for the option to play every core game with the Pro controller.
____

@PopRocks359,

That's really not a big enough "upgrade" worth investing on for only multi-platform games when we're nearing the end of a generation.
That is why I hope for more Wii U exclusive games.
____

You two probably thought I was being a fanboy. I was just speaking as a gamer and fan of both companies.

Kakkoii4295d ago

There's nothing wrong with saying "upon the earth". In fact, it's good to use such terms because it keeps the English language lively, instead of descending into the hell of abbreviations and slang words that seems to be happening more and more with each generation.

On topic:

Why does he still perceive the Wii U as a child's plaything?

Isn't the Wii U now aimed at mature gamers?

attilayavuzer4298d ago

I think at this point Nintendo has cemented its public perception as a casual family brand. Will be near impossible to break free of that image given the Wii's audience this generation. It's like Spy Kids 2 going for an R rating.

Morrigan-Aensland4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

I agree with this guy about the initial novelty of the Wii u pad getting old quickly.

A lot of nintendo fans aren't thinking clearly when it comes to the Wii u. They are not thinking of the practicality of actually using a Wii u pad and having to take your eyes from the teli to focus on an external screen. I like to be immerse in my experience of playing games and the constant back and forth focusing from one screen to another will quickly get old. A lot of times I don't want to blink my eyes when gaming and I understand the whole thing about keeping the teli uncluttered but that's silly. Menus, maps and other things are translucent and doesn't bother me and I don't understand why using the d-pad as hotkeys wouldn't suffice for fast loadout change.

The Wii u pad should be scrapped and the savings made from not using that control could be used for a better video card , more ram and a faster processor. The Wii u should be at least 6 times as powerful as hd systems of this gen

Ck1x4298d ago

I think most people that want the WiiU have played a DS game or two in their lifetime and understand the mechanics of how this will work on a home console. And people that can't multitask just shouldn't be driving, since that's something that you have to do in a car.

Morrigan-Aensland4298d ago

"I think most people that want the WiiU have played a DS game or two in their lifetime and understand the mechanics of how this will work on a home console. And people that can't multitask just shouldn't be driving, since that's something that you have to do in a car."

I'm amazed at your stupidity but where do I begin to point it out?
Fanboys will say anything to apologize for bad decisions Nintendo makes. Read what you wrote again and if you can't see how stupid what you wrote is then look around at your life and you'll understand.

cuddlemonkey4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

Having to buy a standard controller seperate from the console is such a pain! But that Wii pad sure is cuddly and cute though!

Ck1x4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

I'm glad you took that personal because you must be one of those people! Anyway, just make sure you come back here to defend all of this bravato about Nintendo's bad decisions. When Microsoft or Sony include some kind of touch screen in their main controller as well. I don't think it will be as large as the WiiU screen, but they will probably do something to bite off Nintendo ;)
They always do... Live with that!
And we won't touch on intelligence, Mr. I don't like Nintendo products, but I'm going to troll-hop through every article because I have nothing else in life going for me... pure hater at its finest

Sono4214298d ago

So in other words your saying you can't handle the back and forth and that's why you seem so upset and troll every Nintendo/Wii U Article? Seriously though, i'm finding you on every single one. Your kind of coming off as pathetic. I've said it before and i'll say it again, you arn't a gamer your a fanboy, you will nit pick and say anything negative you can think of about it whether it actually bothers you or not, simply to hate on it. You should stop trolling and try gaming sometime its actually really fun.

sikbeta4297d ago

There is no novelty, tablet-crap is out there right now, it's called the I-POS and other generic tablet devices

The whole package needs to shine, not juts the input method or an specific feature, IF Nintendo get this right, there will be no problems, but believing the tablet-pad will bring the masses alone just like the wii-mote did... I don't know.

dedicatedtogamers4298d ago

Based on the ruggedness of the DS and 3DS, the WiiU tablet will likely be more durable than 95% of the PC and "smartphone" tablets out there.

stuna14298d ago

What I truly believe he is hinting at is that this controller is not going to be cheap! So of course it's not something you're going to want your children playing around with. I for one don't really think the WII U is going to be as cheap as many others think it's going to be.

TheUndertaker854298d ago

Based on the controller itself we can guess it'll have a pretty steep price range too, probably higher than the DS3 or 360 controllers.

Might be 95% more durable but can it stand up to 95% of kids? Are you willing to risk that assuming it does launch at a higher price point? Most parents would say no.

Bereaver4298d ago

Excellent? Maybe not. Child usable? Yeah, for sure.

I mean, I see parents giving their children their IPAD and Iphones. I think an IPAD is going to out cost the WiiU tablet.

MEsoJD4298d ago

I fail to see the need for such a controller. It seems like more of a distraction to me... Games like ZombieU that require you take your eyes off of the t.v. really takes you out of the expierience. Atleast for me... I don't want to take my eyes off the screen and I don't inventory management, maps, or etc were big problems before the reveal of the system(it's more up to the developer). The only thing that's going to convince me to get a wiiU are quality exclusives that seem appealing to my taste.

I can understand the sentiment. The Wii U gamepad does look a tad fragile. But if kids can be expected to hold 3DSes properly, I see no reason why people can't trust them with this controller.

Rainstorm814298d ago

Depends on how much a replacement costs...

DeadlyFire4298d ago

70+ bucks I am betting. I am hoping its not half the price of the console.

stragomccloud4297d ago

It's just a screen with a receiver. It's not an actual separate device.

attilayavuzer4297d ago

But I mean, if a Wiimote+Nunchuk was 50 at release, I really can't see the whole Wii U tablet being less than twice that.

Khordchange4298d ago

neither are iphones yet you see analysts going crazy about them

DivineAssault 4298d ago (Edited 4298d ago )

Im sure fisher price helped make it J/K.. Its child proof if nintendo is putting it out.. They wouldnt make a fragile controller.. But i must agree.. I dont even let my nephews use my wii motes unless they wash their hands & use the strap.. Outside of Nintendo 1st party, the extra screen will mostly be used to remove clutter from the tv & for real time maps & quick inventory selection.. I dont see other devs doing much else with it

Microsoft Survey Asks About Handheld

Number1TailzFan2d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares3d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv722d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka2d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion2d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer2d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow12d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer2d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle7d ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Lightning777d ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga7d ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

darthv726d ago

to you it may seem like the minority... but your bubble is shrinking because more and more are following suit. convenience is a hell of a drug and its also why physical sales only amount to 30% of overall game sales. times are changing, you either get with them or you get left behind.

neutralgamer19926d ago

Darth

30% physical sales: yet Phil and xbox division are in a rush go give up on that 30%. they don't have any right to give up any piece of the pie since the control such a little of the pie to begin with

also, the market is clearly speaking that the model Xbox is pushing isn't working right now the keyword being right now. you are right about freedom to play anywhere so i hope they put their games on steam

shinoff21837d ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga7d ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan7d ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

S2Killinit6d ago

MS is after diminishing consoles as a medium. They want to destroy this market because they couldnt win. MS’s vision is to dissolve console gaming.

romulus237d ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv727d ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

TheEroica6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Perfectly reasonable post down voted by insecure corporation friendly folk.... But not gamers. Real gamer want accessibility and ease of acquisition for all.... Company shills are the only ones still telling us that hardware locking people from games is good for us.

Chevalier6d ago

@Darth

You should stop parroting metrics like an idiot without context.

"Xbox content and services revenue grew 62% in Q3 from a year earlier, “driven by 61 points of net impact” from the purchase of the third-party video game giant, Microsoft said."

61 of the 62% was from their merger so net increase is ONLY 1%

SimpleDad7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.
