I think it was a little of both, honestly.

Nintendo backed off the core audience for much of the Wii's lifespan. Now that the Wii U is generating more core content than its predecessor, core gamers remain apprehensive (assuming this site is anything to go off of).

shackdaddy4309d ago

This site is nothing to go off of... just fyi...

stragomccloud4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

They didn't back off the core gamer, they just widened their focus. On the Wii we got 1.5 Zelda games(Because one was a gamecube port), 2 real Mario games, 2 Metroid games, 2 Kirby games, Super Smash Bros., New Super Mario Bros, and a Donkey Kong Country game. Not to mention Xenoblade, Last Story, Fatal Frame 2 remake and Fatal Frame 4(Though not released here). Obviously the casual stuff got most of the press, but Nintendo gave us a lot of great core games this generation.

that said... there were some years that I felt left out by Nintendo... like.... this year, and also 2008.

live2play4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

a true hardcore gamer does not only play m/t rated games, with guns, violence and blood
but also plays games that are rated e for everyone and enjoys many genres

if someone didnt enjoy the ds and the wii because they lacked good graphics and violent games
THEN THEY ARE NOT HARDCORE GAMERS

they are graphic whore gamers, dudebro gamers, mainstream gamers. NOT TRUE HARDCORE GAMERS

if you honestly cannot like BOTH mario galaxy 2 and last of us then you DONT deserve to call yourself a hardcore gamer

so NO, a hardcore gamer cannot abandon nintendo, because once they do, they cease to be TRULY hardcore

PirateThom4309d ago

I didn't like the Wii specifically because of the controller, it ruined two perfectly good Mario games by shoehorning in motion controls where they didn't belong.

Nintendo lost me with their controller, not their games. The most basic element of a console was where they messed up and made their games unplayable for me.

Shok4309d ago

Nintendo could've focused more on the core, let's not lie to ourselves.

BUT, if you considered yourself a Nintendo fan during the N64 and GameCube days, then I don't see how you could not have enjoyed the Wii because Nintendo still gave us the games us Nintendo fans enjoy. They never stopped making Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, DK, Smash Bros, etc.

That's my view.

live2play4309d ago

yup a "hardcore NINTENDO fan" got alot out of the wii
donkey kong country
kirby return to dreamland
smash bros
mario glaxy 2
skyward sword
epic yarn
im just gonna stop naming games now

meganick4309d ago

Yeah, there's definitely a nice selection of quality Nintendo games on Wii, especially the Mario Galaxy games, which I love. I just wish I could say the same about Wii's third party selection. Though there are some third party gems worth playing.

TruthbeTold4309d ago

The bottom line problem in my mind regarding Nintendo's 'Hardcore' gamer abandoning them issues is that people had to wait WAY too long for the N64, and in the meantime, Sony stole their thunder with the PS1. Then once the N64 did come out and got going a bit in spite of its still using cartridges, and PS1 dominance, the PS2 came along, and took things to the next level. That time, Nintendo was forced to wait yet again before tying to compete by releasing the GameCube because they hadn't gotten enough life out of the N64 yet due to its late release.

With the Wii, they decided not to push the tech envelope at all, but go for innovative controller play. It worked as far as selling millions of extra consoles to people who don't game a lot or buy many games goes. But the lack of Wii horsepower meant that a lot of 3rd party games just couldn't be released on it for the perhaps 50% or so of the huge install base who actually do play games a lot and buy a lot of games.

Finally with the Wii U, Nintendo, (and gamers I would hope) are hoping that even if Sony and MS go for a somewhat measurably more powerful machine, the physics and graphics capability of the Wii U will still allow for ports of 3rd party games. Even if they don't run as smoothly, or in the same resolution as their PS4/Nextbox counterparts.

DyingVendetta4309d ago

I totally agree with you. its seems that ignorant PS360 "fanboys" can predict the future that the next microsoft and sony consoles will be way more powerful than wiiu when those consoles havent been announced..let alone the specs. Im sure the WiiU will gain WAY more 3rd party support than the wii.

You know, as I set up some custom images in Steam for my emulators earlier today, I was struck by a thought: why didn't the N64 have any big JRPGs? Any RPGs, period?

These days, when we think about the "golden" classics of gaming history, of the NES and SNES and PS1 and PS2 eras... the games we think of are overwhelmingly JRPGs.

When the PS1 came out, Nintendo apparently ended up losing those wonderful RPGs that made the SNES such a great, classic console. No Final Fantasies. No Dragon Quests. With the N64, and then to the Gamecube, and then to the Wii, Nintendo has been forced to go it alone more or less, relying almost entirely on first-party software to move their consoles.

And, for core gamers, well, we can't be satisfied just by the games from one company. We need variety. And quantity.

It's not a matter of abandonment. It's a matter of divergence. Back in what was it, 1994(?) Nintendo and Sony divided the whole of the community. Sony took up the core gamers with a wide variety of third-party titles--achieving, if you'll forgive the cliche, quality through quantity--and, well, it's not rocket science. A good third of N4G users are gamers. It's not exactly a big mystery.

The only real thing to change this dynamic in the past decade or so has been the advent of Western gaming with the rise of the Xbox in a post 9/11 world, but that's a whole big can of worms I'm not gonna open here.

Shnazzyone4309d ago

I've never understood the concept that nintendo stopped supporting the hardcore at some point. I blame it on the short memories of the youth. In reality there was little in the approach of wii that was any different then Nintendo has always taken. Their problem was more the third parties abandoned nintendo followed by gamers who thought it wasn't for them. Meanwhile nintendo did reward those who stuck by. I hope the hardware boost will clear up the hard feelings.

MrKingofVideoGames4309d ago

If there was a way for me to agree with your post multiple times, I would. I have a vast collection of every Nintendo console's games and for every "Contra" cartridge there is a "Miracle Piano" and "Donkey Kong Jr. Math" cart. It has always been this way, why this topic continually trolls around the internet is beyond logic...

Shnazzyone4308d ago

Mario paint? hey you pikachu? Donkey Konga? Nintendo has always had a casual focus coupled with the hardcore.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
