Bethesda's Pete Hines Says Not so Fast on Dawnguard Coming to PS3/PC

Rumors have been flying this week regarding a release date announcement for Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC to come to PS3 and PC, but Bethesda VP Pete Hines says not so fast.

Well I guess they are in the market for money and if M$ offered them crap load then yeah, they were going to go that route. There are sooooooooo many games on PS3 (and I am sure on PC too). I mean, my backlog keeps piling up on me. Timed DLC doesn't bother me anymore. If there were too few games then yeah, I'd be frustrated but since there are so many games out there, this shouldn't be a big problem.

I just got my hands on HEAVY RAIN GOTY edition with all the DLC and everything plus 30 days PS PLUS trial from Amazon for only $19.99 and I was THAT close picking up Dead Island (also $19.99).

Well my copy of Skyrim is getting traded in tomorrow. You do realize that every bethesda GOTY edition has sold for 45 euros over here and each DLC pack will cost 15 euros if Dawnguards price is an indicator, so if they release 3 DLC packs thats the price of a GOTY edition minus the 19 euros I got earlier for my copy of Skyrim.

So yes in a way I am giving Bethesda my money twice but I'm getting 19 euros for it back, all the DLC will be on disk, there will be one more used copy for people to choose from, there might be 4 DLC packs which is saving even more money and all I had to do is wait which is something us PS3 and PC gamers have been doing already.

Waiting ain't a problem when your accustomed to it.

Of the three console manufacturers, only Nintendo a pure player has any significant gain in the last decades.

Sony for instance has a 20-year low stock and accounting for inflation it looks even worse! It's also close to it's 1-year low so things hasn't improved.

MS is stagnated in the last decade after all the anti-trust BS, but has been on a short term upswing recently and close to both it's 5-year and 1-year high so it is definitely improving.

The E&D division that houses Xbox 360 is making money hand over fist with little pricing pressure right now.

Yeah, usually the idea with having things timed were so that you could say that it was exclusive for a couple of months, and have people buy your console in the belief that that's the only console getting the content. Then months later the publisher could still release the content on other platforms and cash in. Hence the exclusivity deal wouldn't have to be expensive enough to cover much in terms of lost sales on other platforms, and would still get audience to your console.

Nowadays they just tell people "Yeah, it'll be on other system in a month or so, but our fans will be bored by it by then."

...Where's the fun in that? A little more secrecy please. Or of course you could invest in studios and make your own exclusive content, but no.

Im about to platinum Skyrim on PS3 in under 280 hours, and it has played better than GTAIV performance wise.

Either clean up your HDD or look into a new one , it seems most multiplatform games depend on the HDD more.

Personally I don't really mind waiting. I still have plenty to do in Skyrim before I even look at the DLC. Thats without even talking about the quality of this particular DLC itself.. it looks cheap and novel just choosing to overpower enemies with a vampire or a crossbow.. seriously its better off staying on the Xbox. I'm keen to see what's after this one.
Anyway, I still haven't finished Morrowind and am more interested in that right now.

They said 360 owners would get the DLC one month early, Dawnguard came out on the 26th of June and it is now the 26th of July...it should be coming out this week.

You know what they kept saying before launch, oh the PS3 version is the same as the 360 version and the PS3 version has nothing but problems since launch. It's like giving a fanbase the middle finger. This is the studio people selected for studio of the year at the VGA's...bet PC/PS3 owners feel pretty stupid now that they voted for them. Well done.

The PC isn't so bad since they have mods to play around with so it isn't as bad but still isn't fair when they used to be the main audience for the Elder Scrolls franchise.

After dumping several hundred hours into Fallout 3 on PS3, I would never recommend buying a Bethesda game on the platform. Not only are they guaranteed to screw you with timed-exclusive deals with Microsoft, but when it finally does arrive on the PS3 it will be largely broken.

Problem is, MikeCosgrove, is that just gives Microsoft even more power to keep the Bethesda IPs on their console. The fact PS3 users don't like the game only gives Bethesda more fuel to partner with Microsoft.

There should be an organization that ranks/rates developers and publishers based on their actions and how they affect the community. If a developer puts out a product on multiple platforms but it is showing signs of support on only one of them, they should be rated poorly for it. If they take forever to fix bugs on one platform over another, the same.

Right now, there's a "who cares?" philosophy considering as long as their largest market share platform is okay the rest is fine as well (especially if they're getting money in addition to game sales). The consumer has no option but to stop buying or to buy on the platform that works. That doesn't do any good but for the platform owner, not the end user or the idea of competition in the market.

I realise this info is a little late/potentially pointless but you can 'install' F3 on the PS3, when you first exit vault 101 pause the game and you'll notice your yellow HD light on your PS3 will be flashing like crazy.

Leave it paused for ten minutes or so (until the yellow light stops flashing constantly) and it will be 'installed'.

If you leave it to do that it becomes almost as stable as the 360 version. If you're running around doing stuff while that 'install' is happening it becomes much more glitchy.

like ive said above, completley agree about fallout and cgoodno thats a brilliant idea, companies only care about there money so my approach when i get a bugged game, fallout, AC1, is to not wait for patches ect i just take it back for a refund because i refuse to pay for a broken product. You wouldnt accept a broken console! What you're being revisionist in a dangerous way here . Sega screwed themselves up on Dreamcast on several occasion on their own or thanks to EA .

1. Sega 32x failure, and the failure of Sega Saturn in North America. These left a bitter taste in consumers virtual mouths, and many except the hardcore, decided to look elsewhere

2. PS2 hype - Built in DVD player, and the Hype that the PS2 would be the second coming, led people to their welcoming arms. Never mind the fact that in 2000, Dreamcast had a much better lineup.

3. No EA support. Without EA support, this caused some to consider the legitamacy of Sega to be a serious player.

4. No online play until PS2 was almost available. This was Sega's killer app for the dreamcast, and it wasn't handled correctly. THey needed to have the Network available at launch.

5. Lack of funds. Sega was drowning in debt at the time, and didn't have the financial resources to sustain having a presence in the marketplace

6. incoming new consoles.

The dreamcast was actually initially a success , it was mismanaged by Sega japan and sega us that's all .

With 3rd party seeing people go crazy over a dvd player , their choice was enough enough without having to buy most ips .

Kind of the way Sony payed for Co-op in farcry 3 and payed for extra game types in assassin's creed 3. The twitter doesn't sound like much other than they said they have announced nothing and they don't have a date yet and they would tell you if they did. Maybe they wanted console versions of the DLC out first and PC last but PS3 hardware is causing trouble.

I'm not going to lie.. The add on is dull, mediocre at best, the quests are involving and you feel a sense of emotional attachment but it ends too quickly for my liking. You can get through the vampire quests is less than 8 hours at a push.

Tbh you PS3 players are not missing much, I've been lucky enough to jump into PC gaming and play the "best version" of Skyrim. The mods alone have made it into a whole new game, or at-least it feels that way.

When Microsoft buys a timed exclusive, part of the deal seems to be that the developer can never even speak of the possibility of it going to another console.

History shows that timed exclusives always go to another console, hence the word "timed".

However, Pete Hines of Bethesda has to act like he doesn't know because that would go against the very reason Microsoft paid so much money to begin with. Other developers in his situation always speak the same way.

I couldn't even finish Skyrim due to boredom, so I couldn't care less, but PS3 and PC folks shouldn't entertain the possibility that this DLC isn't coming.

I almost guarantee in Fall.

Typical BS from this Gen If you are a multiplatform developer you need to develop for each platform PERIOD no timed BS you give every platform the same treatment and content you give the others AT THE SAME TIME. This gen has been sickening when it comes to this. I miss the old days where for one you had to develop a complete game to begin with and actually fix your sh!t before you release it. I have done that very same thing with every Bethesda game from since fallout 3, i only buy the game of the year edition. I just wait, there is too many games that i have yet to play anyway one more will not cause me any less sleep over it.

If their willing to give out a game of the year edition, and it goes to $20.00 on a platnum edition than that's the only way in going to buy it anyway if their support for bug fixes are very slow like they have been over and over . Hum ID and carmack fought nails and tooth for a while to keep OPENGL alive over directX, and are almost alone there .

Hell to this day , they are still using open GL with their IDtech 5 engine , even if they admits that DIrect X pretty much won , given the lack of support , and arent switched yet because of their habits .

Oh, come on! I've been waiting for a long time to get this expansion on the PC! It's because of Skyrim that I got into The Elder Scrolls. I even managed to get a few games for myself because I've been saving up in time for the DLC, including Assassin's Creed and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Another being The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year edition on PS3 and I'm having a blast with it.

Damn it, Microsoft! Quit calling dibs first and leaving the rest of us with table scraps! I am so sick of the Xbox 360 getting everything first. Don't see what the big deal is. It's a rather average game overall, and is pretty poor in a lot of areas.

It was the Oblivion that I think Oblivion was trying to be, but previous releases in the series - Morrowind, Daggerfall - had a lot more going for them, despite the obvious limitations of engines from back in the day.

Not that you can't make Morrowind look even better than Skyrim with the graphical overhauls now available.

Back on topic though, I agree that timed exclusivity is bullshit. At the same time, this, along with the fact that PS3 players seemed to get shafted when it came to Skyrim (among other Gamebryo based games), it might be a good idea to simply boycott Bethesda and their content at this point. I don't see the sense in supporting a developer who is more than willing to offer weaker experiences to certain groups.
Not that I feel, personally, they offer great experiences to begin with. Though that is just me.

here is a lesson they will learn, the more people that do not buy it from the PS3 or the PC just shows them more of a reason to go full exclusive to a single platform anyway.

So you end up with no games from their development studio, and the other platform get's all their games and they would be exclusives by default anyway.

so if you want to, you could buy the other system anyway and solve the issue. If you do not want to purchase the other console for what ever reason
you could for example:

force them to support your system anyway is the better way of teaching them a Lesson.

How you may ask?

Buy their games later, but people should give the reason why your buying later instead of a boycott. do not boycott but say i will buy your game's at a much cheaper rate. your going to work harder for less money in return from me.

the work for DLC was done at a certain price but when it does get released on your platform wait until it even drops further in price.

a Boycott get's you nothing where really this get's you at least something.

Make them spend more money, because you are willing to buy their product. but at a much reduced rate, if you feel they are treating you like a 2nd class consumer, prove to them you are treating them as a 2nd class developer. just because someone else is willing to pay out the nose for their software does not mean you have too.

This was mainly for those who bought the game on PS3. They would lose their pc market simply by cutting mod development. At least their versions, while not usually up to pc gaming standards, still match up with the 360 releases in terms of performance.

Neither one of what we said would actually work in the real world though. It's just wishful thinking. Just like my boycott probably wouldn't go anywhere with them, neither would waiting on the game. Both of these have been going on since earlier releases from them, yet people still go out and buy the game, getting wrapped up in the hype when they should be wary.

They created an engine that simply didn't play nice with the architecture of the playstation, knew this, yet neither scrapped developing for the system nor taking the extra time to make a satisfactory port. Hell, even their "new" engine, Creation, is still just a modified version of gamebryo, and the results are possibly even worse than they were for past games. Still, people buy them. And still, people complain every time a game releases.

Bethesda are more than aware of people's issues with their games. They don't care. It shows in the fact that Oblivion, a port that required separate development from the pc and 360 version, was the only game using the engine that actually performed properly, and that was basically out of the gate, mind a few issues here and there.

That is why I say just boycott their games, considering you are a playstation gamer. As I've said before though, it's not like it matters. People still buy their games, despite being burned, more than once, in the past.

The only thing that would change anything would be for people to convince Bethesda to stall on the PS3 release of the game and give it extra attention. This is something that neither the majority of Playstation gamers nor Bethesda would be willing to give. Gamers, apparently, would rather have buggy messes that they could yell about for months after release, and Bethesda would rather spend their time, post-release, developing half-assed DLC.

Is everone on here that oblivious they only own 1 console? The 360 is cheap and if you like skyrim or elderscrolls games they have been on ms platfrm since the beginning. Japanese devs show the ps3 more favorably and screw the 360 version a lot and this is no diffrent. How come anytime there is a negative ms article th same people have had that happen to them and they played it on the 360 and so on. When it comes to this no one seems to have a 360 where skrim plays the best on consoles and dawnguard can be played now.
