Episodic Gaming: The Good and the Bad

Recently, I’ve (Billy Peitz) been asking myself if episodic games are worth it and/or the future of gaming. Not too long ago I finished Episode 2 of Telltale’s The Walking Dead and so far, it’s been a fantastic hit. It’s a strong and character driven story and simply more than just a zombie apocalypse. It’s been highly rated as a huge success. But one example can’t define a genre of video games and hope to expect that all games of the same format to follow suit, can it? I’ve read a few articles, watched a few videos, and have speculated on the topic, and here are my findings.

I think episodic gaming can work really well but there still need tweaking. Using The Walking Dead as an example, far too long was left between episode 1 and 2 and this caused people to get annoyed. To make it work it need's a set schedule, like a TV show, sure one a week maybe to much for the devs but one a month on a solid date will work, none of this pushed back nonsense.

The best thing about episodic gaming is, like a tv show, the suspense of what's going to happen next time. this is what really add's to the feel of the game but it all falls down to the story of course.

I can't wait for season 2 of The Walking Dead and we haven't even finished the first one yet.

If telltale committed to episode/month plan every thing would have turned out great, also rushing it would create some technical errors. So for 5 episodes game they need to get at least 3 ready before releasing the first one, and they can work on the last two meanwhile.

Also an episodic game without a good story could destroy it and make people regret their whole game purchase." Walking Dead has a very awesome story, episode 2 was amazing"

1. Lack of highly exclusive games this generation on XB1, has been the super depressing video game story this gen.
2. Anthem is another,
3. WiiU,
4. XB1 will not work without Kinect lie,
5. XB1SAD Edition,
6. Crackdown 3,
7. Street Fighter V,
8. Sea of Thieves,
9. No Man Sky, (although apparently good now)

MGS4 should replace 3 a lot of characters both hero and villain die permanently in that game, also including a lot of people from MGS3.

TWD season 2 should also be replaced with season 1 nothing telltale has done has broken me since the final section with Lee and Clementine (“keep that hair short” ☹️)
