Mortal Kombat dev wants to make non-fighting game

Series co-creator Ed Boon says if Injustice: Gods Among Us performs well, NetherRealm's "next step" could be making a game in a different genre.

Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm Studios has made a name for itself by creating fighting games, but the company wants to branch out. In an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon said if upcoming brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us performs well, the studio could work on a non-fighting game next.

I would like MK for 3ds :)

-Mika-4320d ago

Since ed boon and his team are horrible developers. The game will look like crap on the 3ds. Look at the vita version of mk. It sad that capcom and akys did a great job of porting their fighters to the vita while the mk team just did not give a crap.

Army_of_Darkness4320d ago

I know they want to! look at conquest MK games they do all the time!

Biohazard88604320d ago

hey how about u make a game mika and see how u do on making it?

I want them to work on a non-fighting game. It will show users how terrible developers these guys are. Their games look really fun in the trailers and preview videos but once you play it. It a freaking mess.

Simon_Brezhnev4320d ago

You basically described yourself. lol

TitanUp4320d ago

oh its you now wonder why i got a headache.

i think they could make a good hack and slash game.

dragon_rocks4320d ago

They did earlier with MK: Shaolin Monks and it was a decent action adventure game. I wouldn't mind if they make another game like that.

mafiahajeri4320d ago

Decent? It was very under rated and was the best GOW clone last gen and thats saying alot.

Venoxn4g4319d ago

didn't it come before GOW?

Tonester9254320d ago

I think they should make a horror game with all the greats.

Chuckie, Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, PinHead, etc..

Where you can play as these characters, or as the civilian trying to get away from them.

mafiahajeri4320d ago

It would be unique but just doesnt sound right.

The Boys Deserves Its Own Mortal Kombat-style Fighter Game

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. In fact, it's hard to believe nobody has developed this yet. The Boys deserves its own Mortal Kombat-style fighter.

Not sure every brutal tv-series with badass kharacters needs its own fighting game ..or there would be a profitable market for them, but yes.. an MK / Injustice style fighting game

..or maybe one with krazy aerial fighting as well would fit The Boys. And I myself would like that a lot more than seeing Homelander or another kharacter as guest in MK.

Yang_kai670d ago

Nah not enough characters invincible in the other hand have way more characters comparing both tv shows comics is a different story but most characters aren’t fleshed out on the boys they just show up out of the blue for the big party 🤷🏿

chobit_A5HL3Y670d ago

idk if there are enough notable characters to make a full game out of. having the star characters appear in mk seems like a better option, imo.

Ashunderfire86670d ago

Homelander in Mortal Kombat is a great idea with amazing finishing moves. He screams Mortal Kombat guest character!

A Train Vs Kabal wow tha would be nice 👍 Kabal would say thank you for copying my finisher now let me show you how it’s really done!

dmonee670d ago

You have to at least add Billy Butcher to that list too lol.

Inverno670d ago

Honestly it should be left untouched. I fear it'll fall into the hands of a developer that would just make some poor effort attempt for a buck. I can't help but picture a game with the likeness of the actors, and shallow/repetitive button smashing gameplay

dmonee670d ago

Not a bad idea. Now I expect the people over at the MK studio will try and get “The Boys” license and charge me $5 for each character I want to use from the boys in the next MK game

ChasterMies670d ago

Wouldn’t Injustice 3 be better? Evil Superman will always be better than discount evil Superman.

Report: "MK12" Spotted on NetherRealm Developer's Work Station

While no official announcement has been made, a NetherRealm dev's work station has seemingly leaked "MK12."

_SilverHawk_837d ago

I cant wait to see this game. Hopefully its on next gen consoles and pc only.

CaptainHenry916837d ago

If it's using Unreal Engine 5, I'm sure it will be

RaidenBlack837d ago

Hope they at least upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 this time.
They are one of the longest user of Unreal Engine 3 till MK11.

ZwVw837d ago

Their next title is rumored to use UE4. NRS uses a heavily modified version of UE3 for most of their releases due to it making it easier for cross platform development. The fact that Injustice 2 and MK11 look as visually stunning as they do running on UE3 is astounding.

RaidenBlack837d ago

Yea ... their heavily modified UE3 build for MK11 looks stunning!
Funny thing ... even Batman Arkham Knight is based off of a heavily modified UE3. Its not UE4.
Sometimes dev modify an engine so much ... it barely resembles the original one.
CoD's engine is the best example here. Started off as idtech III (Quake III)

victorMaje837d ago

Unpopular opinion:
Please go back to how MK2 or UMK3 felt. & bring back test your might. & you don’t need buffed models.

MWH836d ago

an elder gamer! it's always a nice thing to see one around.

Eck0836d ago

MK2 is one of my favorites.. the sounds.. the feeling.. so amazing!

NetherRealm Responds to Accusations of Exploitative Workplace Culture

NetherRealm Studios, the developers behind the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises, has responded to the allegations of what one former employee referred to as "predatory and abusive behavior."

001831d ago

this is what happens when you hire "woke" people, they tarnish your reputation. stay away from them.

Juvia1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

No, this is what happens when companies treat their people like crap. The game industry is well known for being a brutal place to work, but that doesn't mean it's ok. This has nothing to do with people being "woke" or whatever political nonsense you want to spew.

Just look at how Grinding Gear Games addressed this very topic. Not every employer has to be the bad guy.

Beat me to it. This isn't the first studio that has been brought to attention. Riot Games is another example
