Oblivion, Demon's Souls and Skyrim, have been the saving grace of gaming

Ben Walton: Final Fantasy VII was, without a doubt, the most engrossing game I've ever played. Since then I have dabbled with the odd FPS and the like, but they've never stirred the same passion that RPGs have. Over recent years I've noticed that games like Oblivion, Fallout, Demon's Souls and most recently Skyrim, have been the saving grace of contemporary gaming.

The Witcher 2 is awesome :D

Yeah, the witcher 2 is great too. But, I am having a blast with dragons dogma & kingdoms was great too. I just wonder what skyrim would b like if it had one difficulty or a set difficulty. Also, I wonder how much better with a non scaling world that had areas u didn't dare trek across until u were ready.

The Witcher 2 is a brilliant game. I hear a ton about Dragon's Dogma and I think I'll try it out, but I really need more character themed games (ala The Witcher). I'm getting tired of playing games as Mr. Genericface. I can do some LARPing if I wanted ME as a fantasy character. I want to be a sliced up cat-eye man or a 16 year old boy that can't convince me that I'm actually a boy.

Bugthesda? Saving grace of gaming?

I'll give you credit for mentioning the Souls series but come on...what has Bethesda done for gaming?

High sales don't count

lol @ thinking a buggy piece of garbage like Skyrim is the saving grace of gaming. If anything it's killing it with devs just pushing out unfinished games while knowing they could fix but they don't because it's "too time consuming". Then instead of actually fixing their game, they milk people with more buggy DLC instead.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast23d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22923d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko23d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
