GameZone writes, "Ever since its announcement a few weeks ago prior to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, people have had mixed opinions about Sony’s PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, which is being worked on over at Superbot Entertainment. On the one hand, it looks to be an exciting party-based fighter for up to four players. On the other, many think it follows Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. formula a little too closely, with all the light, medium and heavy strikes, as well as the supers.
But is it really a game that can’t outperform Nintendo’s popular multiplayer fighting franchise? "
NetherRealm confirms its Mortal Kombat franchise has sold over 80 million copies in the last 30 years, and here's how it competes against other fighters.
Don't care what anyone says, Smash isn't a traditional fighting game. May as well call Powerstone and Playstation All Stars fighting games. They're more of an arena fighter /party game.
Including Smash Bros in a list of fighting games, is like including GTA in Racing games.
While Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale didn't get the best review, there are still some aspects of the game that deserve some credit.
Though PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a bit of a cult classic, it could have been a big hit if it launched in 2022 instead of 2012.
It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.
Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?
It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.
I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.
I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.
Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.
I agree with the majority of those points, especially with the idea of cross-play, except the third one. It's subjective, but I like the challenge of fighting to stay within the arena and getting my enemy near the edge and finally booting them over. Always fun to see them blasting away over the edge or into the distance and it feels as if the world is a little more open than just the arena.
is that Sony's roster could be superior purely because Superbot don't have to pluck multiple characters from one franchise to fill up slots. So no secondary characters, no clones - just one character per first/second party IP, and the game could have 20-30 brawlers no problem. That adds a huge amount of variety, with no room for filler.
Agreed, the roster is packed. The only reason I didn't choose that as a reason is because, at the moment, it's incomplete. But I could easily see great characters like Nariko from Heavenly Sword, Robbit from Jumping Flash!, and others joining the party. That'd be a big hit.
Cross platform play isn't a very good reason especially when one considers the new smash Bros. game is coming out on wiiu and 3ds...
Not that I'm a fan of these type of games but hopefully they spend time on balancing the characters (which may be a factor in roster size for release). I'd rather have well-balanced characters that many will try rather than tens and tens of characters where only 3 or 4 wiuld be useful. These are extremes of course.
