Why Do We Need Final Fantasy VII HD

Yoichi Wada was asked about when the Final Fantasy VII remake will come to fruition. His controversial answer got a lot of people questioning whether or not the company has any vested interest in remaking their most popular game.

We at Twinfinite ask the question of whether a thing like this is even possible while still living up to everyone's expectations.

It is easily possible... Just don't go overboard with it. Give it "presentable" graphics on par with or maybe a bit better than that of say Crisis Core. Have the backgrounds redone (NOT CHANGED). Spruce up some attacks, add new materia, add new places, add new enemies/bosses, just as extras, add more chocobos/mini-games at the Golden Saucer. Don't touch the story, don't touch the dialog, no need for voice acting either unless it's really necessary and they can provide good ones.

Most of those things are optional, just make the character models and places look better (we do NOT need it looking as good as FFXIII. Just as long as it's around Late-PS2 quality).

Lovable4331d ago

"It is easily possible"

LOL. Did you really said that?

Anyways, if they're gonna make a remake, might as well make it top notch not a half ass upgrade.

Snookies124331d ago

Yes I did say that, it's not like they have to go through the process of making an entirely new story, new characters, decide how events will play out... The game is THERE. Just mold it into something more presentable. So yes EASILY possible, Enix just doesn't care enough about their fanbase anymore to attempt it, either that or they're scared they'll mess everything up.

Lovable4331d ago

Do you even have any idea how much it would cost just to get it remade with current tech? Do you also get the reason why remade was done on handhelds? Is it possible? Yes. Is it "easily possible?" NO.

zeal0us4331d ago

I love FF7 a lot but we really don't need a remake. SE should just focus on the rest of their projects instead of keep add more to the list.

Snookies124331d ago

Lol, are you people missing my point or what? I'm saying it would be much easier to rework FF7 than it would be to make a completely new game from scratch. A majority of the work is already done for them, the game is right there. Sure it's going to cost a good bit of money and take a lot of development time, but do they not realize just how much money they'd make off of it? Just from people's nostalgia alone?

bow2yoda4331d ago

in order to remake ff7 even with ps2 graphics, it would have to be done from scratch. the engine is completly out dated and they would most likely use unreal 3 to make said game. if you have to remake the game it is a waste of time to use old tech!

darthv724331d ago

I dont think there is anyone that truly "needs" it. There sure are plenty who "want" it though.

In some cases, the release of something in a remastered form (be it movies, music or games) can sometimes lead to the devaluing of the original.

Obvioulsy from the collectors POV they will want the original. Any subsequent releases to be minimal so to keep the value of the original as high as possible.

the positive side of a re-release is that more people can get one and see what the craze was about.

FriedGoat4331d ago

Lol at unreal engine 3.

SilentNegotiator4331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

Easy. Don't worry, I'll make it this afternoon during my lunch hour.

They wouldn't go 'moderate' if they remade FF7. They would need to GO overboard, or else it wouldn't fair well in its reception.

Reibooi4331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

@Snookies12

Really did you read what you wrote? Not only would it not be easy to remake the game(we will get to that in a moment) but you honestly think the game can get by WITHOUT a script rewrite and VO? Have you played the original game recently? The dialog was riddled with horrible translation errors. People don't seem to remember just how bad FFVII's original translation was. On top of that nearly every RPG has VO these days so releasing a remake of one of the biggest of all time without is borderline retarded.

On to the amount of work. People don't seem to remember that PSone era FF games were basically 3D character models against pre rendered backdrops. NOTHING from the PS1 era could be reused. They would from the ground up have to build these environments for 3D something they were never meant to be and that means massive work and that isn't even considering the world map(something most modern J-RPG's don't even do anymore because of the resources needed)

FFVII's(hell any of the PSone era FF's) scale was MASSIVE when compared to what we have today. The freedom you had back then was immense and doing that with a engine of today would cost a metric crap ton of money. That isn't even taking into account the voice acting or the script rewrite.

So basically yeah they know what they need to do but nothing could be reused. Script would need rewriting, graphically they would be using nothing and would have to refer to concept art(if it still even exists), They would need to add VO, Have the entire soundtrack redone by Uematsu, possibly add Yuffie and Vincent into the game as not side characters since they are mainstays in the fiction now. I mean it would be a TON of work. Even though they have a idea of what they are doing from a technical standpoint they might as well be making a entirely new game.

Trebius514331d ago

The unreal engine has brought us a lot of games (because its so easy to utilize) but has made devs lazy. That engine is garbage compared to the ones developers use to build games from the ground up. That said ... if they remake it with something as ridiculous as Unreal Tech which wouldnt even work well for an RPG (imho) it would be terrible.

Just put aside a small team to remaster it ... thats all we ask, or better yet, announce that itll NEVER happen, stop teasing it ... and just work on getting your already promised titles out. You know .... like that certain one that people bought a PS3 for at launch but still havent gotten...???

sikbeta4331d ago

@Snookies

It's not, SE takes 4 years and release a corridor game (XIII), 6 years and still no Versus, doing VII-R would take them 2 gens without gimping the whole game

MRMagoo1234331d ago

I dont want them to add stuff at all i just want a spruced up version to ps3 graphics nothing else is needed imo just the same exact game with alot better graphics.

guitar_nerd_234331d ago

When Crisis Core came out I thought they were getting ready to do it on PSP because of all the dotted lines to other areas that couldn't be crossed.

abc12334331d ago

It's not easily possible at all to make a game as massive as FF7 using current gen graphics. Consider how long they took making XIII which had a much smaller world than VII. There's no point whatsoever making a remake on the current gen consoles now, if anything they should wait until the next gen.

wishingW3L4331d ago

FF13-2 is much more bigger than FF13 and it only took them like a year.

Lovable4331d ago

@wishingW3L

You can't be serious. FF 13-2 reused the same place over and over again. It's not necessarily bad since it's the nature of the story, but surely Archlyte step on FF 13 alone is bigger than all the places in FF 13-2 combined!

Hozi4331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

I just want Square-Enix to release FFVersus already. If they announce a remake for 7, there is no way that we will see that game anytime soon.

P.S-Yoichi Wada said they will only remake FF7 when they have surpassed ff7 in another game. Our only hope is Versus13.

Darth_Bane794331d ago

THEY HAVENT EVEN FINISHED VERSUS OR EVEN STARTED WORKING ON KINGDOM HEARTS 3, AND YOU EXPECT THEM TO DO FF VII??? GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!

illizit4331d ago

I think if they made it like Mass Effect, it is DEFINITELY profitable. Imagine having the tiny cities (like Mass Effect planets) and a similar world map. Obviously, the cities would have to be redone and would take a while, but Mass Effect was such a huge game and they were able to do it.

Ranma14331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

S Q U A R E - E N I X is incapable of making a single FF game BETTER than the WORST main series FF game made by S Q U A R E S O F T.

They have proven this time and time again, hence i dont trust them to make an FF7 remake without making it mediocre at best (they will mess it up somehow, its SE)

VanillaBear4331d ago

Can they just make the bloody game

I want a FF8 remake...that isn't going to happen untill they do a FF7 remake....great, FF8 fans have to wait even longer.

Snookies124331d ago

I want an 8 and 9 remake... Though honestly, 8 would do better with that. Considering they have all pretty real-world looking characters. FF9 would be tricky with ones like Amarant and Steiner... Could you imagine them in HD? LOL!

Dravidian4331d ago

Well....we're already getting a FFX remake soooo....

Dravidian4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

@Smashman98: I didn't believe you( you're lack of a link vs my memory) so I decided to look it up myself. You, sir or madam, are correct. I must therefore apologize to anyone I misinformed.

You're a good man/woman, smashman98 (Iprefer not to judge gender from name or pic).

EDIT:more bubbles for you

TheLyonKing4331d ago

I would love an ff 8 remake more than a 7 any day that game was easily the better out the two hands down. Will probably get disagrees for it but I don't care am embracing the truth.

Things is I would rather them remake when they are on their last legs, I honestly would prefer them to keep trying with the new fantasies and if it keeps under selling then yes remake 7 that will give them money cause people will buy it and then remake 8 XD then 9!

WildArmed4331d ago

FF8!
Yess, would love a remake of that.
Or even a spiritual successor with the badass junction system.

As long they are bringing FF5 and FF6 to the 3DS...Im pretty sure one day FF7 will be done one day.

I wonder if they are not remaking FF7 because they would want to make it a multiplat. But sony holds some publishing rights or something?

Lovable4331d ago

I don't think Sony holds the publishing rights for FF 7 since it's also being release in Steam(correct me if I'm wrong)?

manasteel884331d ago

they could still own the rights on console distribution.

Brownghost4331d ago

Yeah it's coming on steam with achievements and leader boards

ChickeyCantor4331d ago

That was released by Eidos...ironically.

USEYOURFIST4331d ago

sony holds some of the rights and are a sharehoder in square and woud probably try very hard to block it from multiplat id imagine

shodaime4331d ago

a sequel would atleast be better

smashman984331d ago

There has been a sequel and a prequel and a movie Ido why they don't remake it
Sure it would be expensive but risky it would not atleast in terms of profit

slaton244331d ago

i would like to see something with genesis considering he does survive...if u collection all G-files it shows the ending...if thats the prequal to FF7 than we have advent children and then dirge of cerberus than what happens to genesis. In my opinion with that missing detail they should remake FF7 and make a FF7-2 just to deal with genesis return....i myself would like to see something atleast with genesis if nothing comes man what a cliffhanger

Canary4331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

Calling it "Final Fantasy HD" makes me think a XIII-style CGI-fest version of FF7 in with Advent Children's aesthetic.

That's not a good idea.

A simple PSN/Vita/3DS remake in the vein of Chrono Trigger DS would be much better. Rewrite the script a little bit (and re-translate it), maybe add in a few sidequests or whatnot, a new game plus feature, and replace all of the 2D art.

And then also either replace the (awful) 3D models with sprites, or better 3D models. I'd argue for the former over the latter, but there you go.

It wouldn't cost much money to produce, could be sold on EVERY current gaming platform relatively easy, and would rake in an enormous profit.

It's kind of a no-brainer.

So, of course, Square Enix won't do it.

The way it was handled was so dumb. One shots in melee...your teammates are to ostupid to get away from its attack. So you most often end up alone in a certain fight.

Two words, one accessory....Safety Bit

MeteorPanda1d 19h ago

Needing an accessory to keep a.i from dying and only one of them isnt great.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5228d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5228d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212128d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

MrNinosan28d ago

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5227d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5227d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos28d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani27d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum28d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman28d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim28d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I disagree Batman
