EA: SmartGlass is a "killer initiative" that "puts positioning pressure" on Nintendo

The general consensus from most of the people we've talked with in the industry is that Xbox SmartGlass is a very smart move for Microsoft. Publishers seem genuinely excited by it (almost more so than by Wii U - though, that's purely anecdotal) and this was perhaps best exemplified by EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau who could hardly contain his enthusiasm for SmartGlass during E3.

I'll wait until I can actually use a tablet with my 360 for some gaming purpose, but it does sound like it steals Wii U's thunder.

greenpowerz4336d ago (Edited 4336d ago )

Microsoft's Surface runs Windows 8, so it probably can operate 360 games like PC's with W8 will be able to. Things like seamlessly swapping consoles(PC, 360, Surface, 720 and other enabled 3rd party devices will be available)

Play Halo 4 on 360, pause the game and resume on Surface by plugging in a 360 controller, using smartglass tech to do other things like spectating multi player games. Too many possibilities. BLU RAY-like director commentary that alert you when unlocking Achievments or targeted points in games that show up on devices would be cool. Buy a car in Forza 4 and have detailed info show up on the smartglass app on devices.

Hufandpuf4336d ago (Edited 4336d ago )

Speaking of Forza, it'd be cool if your tablet or smartphone acted like a rearview mirror or something like that.

Yeah i'm not sure if MS will hurt Wii-U sales, but I can't see thye reverse happening either.

The 360 challenges Wii-U in every Major area from Core to Casual to the tablet itself.

It'll be interesting what happens this holiday

@Sucitta
I used to troll on Forza too but then I got to play it and it and amazing game! So stop trolling and go play it.

MS's Surface seems perfect for OnLive!

Feel sorry for Nintendo
Every new system they release people take their ideas and make it better
Ms with its smartglass
Not sure but I think Sony might be able to do this with the vita and ps3 with a firmware update

Ryo-Hazuki4336d ago (Edited 4336d ago )

I like the Wii U for the fact that's its a tablet and controller in one. No need to pause and then do something on the tablet for an app. On the Wii U the screen can actually be used IN the game unlike smartglass which is a bunch of app bs like look at live leader boards or get a detailed look at the gun you are using. Waste of time IMO

CYCLEGAMER4336d ago (Edited 4336d ago )

I agree, to be honest I don't see what all of the uproar is about with smartglass. I don't know if I wanna stop looking at a game to look down on another screen to check a k.d. ratio or check my stats on 2k12.

I could be wrong, but I just do not see the convenience.

Edit: Maybe looking at all of that info on a pair of augmented reality glasses would make it more intriguing though....wink wink...lol

CYCLEGAMER4335d ago

Whats up with all of the STEALTH disagrees?

Anybody care to elaborate or are you to chicken sh^t?? lol

nukeitall4335d ago (Edited 4335d ago )

I pause in Mass Effect quite a bit to look at the map and where I'm supposed to go. I also very often look around while paused to see where my team mate is.

Equipping weapons generally meant using a d-pad or it being simplified to only allow carrying of two weapons mapped to a button.

There are a lot of scenarios of the usefulness of SmartGlass. It can function as a very flexible input mechanism ala keyboard, or informational.

The ability to play a game (or watch a movie) on the move, and then seamlessly continue at home on my PC, then later in the living room sounds fantastic to.

It's not about what you want to do, but what the general public wants (or finds useful). Personally, I'm very excited for this and MS Surface. Win-win combo!

CYCLEGAMER4335d ago (Edited 4335d ago )

@nueitall

First of all thanks for stepping up and at least trying to defend your disagree.

Second I never said that its about what I (myself) wanted to do. I simply stated that I (myself) did not see the convenience of having to look at 2 different screens, I also don't see why anyone would want to take their hands off of the controller during a game to tap on a pad, but thats just me.

Also please show me where MS said that you would be able to play your games using smart glass, I must have missed that.

Lets be honest here, the disagrees really came from me using a COD reference with kill death ratio...ha. Or maybe it was my final statement about the glasses...lol N4g you have to love this audience.

nukeitall4335d ago

I could care less about CoD, but you said:

"I could be wrong, but I just do not see the convenience."

Also:

"Also please show me where MS said that you would be able to play your games using smart glass, I must have missed that."

MS showed this at E3 with NFL. It wouldn't be hard to integrate a game into the whole thing especially if technology is built to share data between Xbox 360, tablets, smart phones and etc.

SmartGlass is an API for third parties to integrate. Should be pretty sweet!

CYCLEGAMER4335d ago

You said:

"The ability to play a game (or watch a movie) on the move, and then seamlessly continue at home on my PC, then later in the living room sounds fantastic to".

and also:

"MS showed this at E3 with NFL. It wouldn't be hard to integrate a game into the whole thing especially if technology is built to share data between Xbox 360, tablets, smart phones and etc".

Ok again....they showed that you are able to draw up a play and use it, I did not see him start up a game of batman, pause it, play it on his tablet, pause that then play it on his pc and or xbox. Where is this rumor coming from? Microsoft never said or demonstrated this.

nukeitall4334d ago

MELMAN26:

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that to start a game, then resume elsewhere the data is all in the save game. All you have to do is transfer it over seamlessly.

If you code the game on tablets, which it likely will be now considering everything from tablet, to desktop to even smart phones are all based on Windows 8 kernel with Direct X support, this isn't far fetched.

It's not rocket science or magic software.

The smartglass may provide less functionality than the wiiu, but it's free. You basically just need a tablet or smartphone and you're ready to use it.

MilkMan4336d ago

Nope. Wii U is the sh!t.
Smartglass is what M$ always does. Think back to Windows 3.1
a shell to rest on top of other peoples work.

Stick with the originators.

ALLWRONG4335d ago

You mean like the new Wii U (360) controller and Nintendo's take on achievements?

MilkMan4335d ago

For sure.

Nintendo strategy is to accommodate the COD crowd so they complain about "the pad" getting in the way of shooting each other while they run around in their mazes. You know they'll look for any excuse to bitch.

So N, is covering their bases.
and they don't have achievements or trophies. They don't believe in them according to Reggies.
I'm fine with that. My number is up 96k+ and it means dick.

I don't follow your train of thought here.

How is this the same as Sony and M$ "trying" (and that's the key word there) to steal yet ANOTHER idea from Nintendo.

I think N's do for some of that.

To say nothing of Sony's raiding of Nintendo's library to push the Move.
(that's a subject for another topic altogether)

neogeo4336d ago

Nin has proved its not who has the better tech, It's if can you mass sell it.

cstyle4335d ago

Smart glass will be an awesome addition to games. So many cool things will be able to be done. Im excited for it.

EA Hopes to Use Generative AI to Drive Monetization and Make Development 30% More Efficient

Today Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson provided a look into his ideas for the use of generative AI in the company's development processes.

I wonder what the next buzz word they'll slap in front of AI to make it sound exciting next? "Generative" as if it's creating its own content. Lol.

Cacabunga56d ago

EA is already dying a painful death..

peppeaccardo56d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken57d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN56d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199256d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies57d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde56d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai57d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken57d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay56d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"

EA - Continuing to evolve our business and teams

EA CEO Andrew Wilson writes: "In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5 percent of our workforce. I understand this will create uncertainty and be challenging for many who have worked with such dedication and passion and have made important contributions to our company. While not every team will be impacted, this is the hardest part of these changes, and we have deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams. Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect. Communicating these impacts has already begun and will be largely completed by early next quarter."

All the big ones doing the same stuff. Terrible. I just hope that all these people are able to get a new job as soon as possible, God know that it is horrible to be left jobless when you have your kids or your parents depending on your financial help

Another long list that skips over UPS cutting 12,000 jobs those workers as we know work without ac low pay and old box trucks but that company had to cut 12k jobs do too loosing billions of dollars year 2 year.

https://edition.cnn.com/202...

The greed and lack of transparency/oversight is disgusting.

Ups are still making bang but not enough for a golden boat fleet.

Remember we all use ups at some time even stuff in our stores this is going to be a huge issue gong forward i know in my area they removed half the state ups stores northern half least population got some 3rd party running packages now from minivans.

Sonic188164d ago

When I explan this I get called a troll 🤔 like wtf

thorstein64d ago

@just_looken

UPS is a different story altogether.

They are paying the people doing the actual work/ earning the money more and eliminating management.

You do realize around this time this happens all throughout many industries (not just the game industry), right? It has to do with taxes for these major companies, like tax subsidies for downsizing. You want to know a little secret? Around May or so you’ll see a spike in hiring…

It blows my mind that people are oblivious to corporate workings.

Andrew33664d ago

So over 25 huge companies cut jobs every year like this and it only got noticed this time?

CrimsonWing6964d ago (Edited 64d ago )

@Andrew336

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Google it up if you’re uninformed of how corporations work. Only gamers seem to live in a bubble and when they see things like crunch, acquisitions, and lay-offs they act like this is the only industry it happens to and how shocked they are about it.

Welcome to the real world, kid.

thorstein64d ago (Edited 63d ago )

EA CEO Wilson's total compensation was 20 million. Let's take away 19 million (I'm sure he can survive on 1 million.... somehow).

1 million is the salary of an in the chair developer @100,000 for 10 years.

He could earn 1 million a year.

And save the jobs of 15 in the chair devs for A DECADE (plus benefits) with ONE YEAR'S compensation.

RhinoGamer8864d ago

No Executive accountability or firings I see...

just_looken64d ago

Do not worry they will take over 40mill say sorry then get hired by playstation or xbox

blackblades63d ago

I heard Japan does it better, they do layoffs like what's happening with companies in the west. The higher ups also being agreeing to to lower there own salary. These MFs like jim and Phil isnt gonna do that they want that $

Sonic188164d ago

Like I said earlier, this is happening all around the gaming industry.

Petebloodyonion64d ago

The point I feel is problematic about all of this is that focusing on Owned Ip means more sequels, remasters and more of what was selling last year.

TheColbertinator64d ago

EA is certainly among the worst,if not the worst
