Molyneux: Vita is 'gimmicky', 'doesn't excite me'

Ex-Microsoft Game Studios boss Peter Molyneux has criticised Sony's newest handheld PlayStation Vita, saying that the device is "gimmicky" and "doesn't excite [him]".

... from 'digital pets' to 'holding hands' to 'Kinect'...

.... and now he's slagging off a powerful handheld with triggers and 2 analogue sticks and a great screen, which has all the POTENTIAL needed for 'core' games to succeed on it...

Seriously, what's he thin.... oh wait, it's Molyneux(!)

Edit: I'm not saying the PS Vita couldn't be doing better, but the reason why right now it's struggling a bit is not because it might be a bit 'gimmicky'.

The problem right now seems to be a lack of support from developers.

wallis4375d ago

For a guy who made me hold hands with a princess in fable 3 and hold buttons down just to open doors I don't think he has a fucking clue what gimmicky means does he? We're in a world of gimmicks and the one thing I respect sony for is that the ps3 is just a tank of processing power, it's handhelds? Tanks of processing power. No kinect, no 3D, no touchscreen for your balls - alright they've got move but it's nowhere near as irritating as kinect is. I don't even play on a console but I prefer sony simply because they haven't made me watch nearly as many retards dance around in their living room as nintendo and microsoft have.

hazelamy4375d ago

with new games in the Assassin's creed, Call of Duty and Bioshock series coming to vita, i'd say it's got some decent support.

ABizzel14375d ago

Sir your games don't excite me.

miyamoto4375d ago (Edited 4375d ago )

Yeah, at least the Vita is the real deal, the genuine article not like his smoke and mirrors Milo fake fest.

guitarded774375d ago

Molyneux: Vita is 'gimmicky', 'doesn't excite me'...

Hey, that's the same way I feel about Molyneux.

Snookies124375d ago

This guy is the biggest bag of fail I've seen in a long time lol. To think... I actually really enjoyed Fable... Makes me sick.

Lucretia4375d ago

its true. im not sure who was on drugs when they gave him a life time achievment award....maybe it was an achievement of failure?

because only game I enjoyed from him was fable 1 and it was just ok. black and white is w/e as is the rest of his games

Fable itself is a gimmick since all he ever did was lie about what was going to happen in it.

Peter is disgusting, I wouldn't even nod my head at him, just probably crack up

Snookies124375d ago

@DarkSymbiote - To admit I liked Fable when it was done by this idiot.

Godmars2904375d ago

Rather its sad that someone with a history in the industry like him has fallen to such a level of irreverence. That much is his own fault is sadder still.

"Molyneux: Vita is 'gimmicky', 'doesn't excite me'"

Exactly my thoughts towards his games...

kneon4375d ago

I think it was a typo in the title, it should say

Molyneux is 'gimmicky', 'doesn't excite me'

Blacktric4375d ago

Heh... true. For a guy who praised Kinect a lot, he sure acts like he is against gimmicky crap. Not saying Vita is anything like that of course...

jujubee884375d ago

Not to insult or draw comparison, but the majority of indy devs on iOS can and have insulted VITA.

Everything from "VITA is DOA" to now this "gimmicky" moniker has been thrown at VITA and it has pretty much always come from iOS devs who want to diss the VITA while promoting their downloadable touch game on Apple devices.

jujubee884375d ago (Edited 4375d ago )

"... the majority of indy devs on iOS TRYING TO MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES"

Obvious mistake. Every game visionary and creator has a unique voice and can not really be labeled.

It is those that build on their legacy be putting down others (like us VITA owners and supporters) that really deserve to be called out and held accountable for what they say and how they act.

"Veni Vidi Vita!"

InTheLab4375d ago (Edited 4375d ago )

You know, he said that..but he really hammered MS the other day about the whole Smart Glass thing and basically said the same thing. He might just not like touch games...which is odd considering how he's willing to ruin Fable with gimmicks...

I thought he was surprisingly impartial during E3. So he doesn't like Vita...that just means we won't see any 22 Cans games on it and I'm sure every one is upset about that /sarcasm..

Arksine4375d ago

If he doesn't like touch games then he picked the wrong platform to develop for.

The fact is this guy failed hard, Microsoft kicked him to the curb, and now he is spewing nonsense in an effort to get in the news. Apparently its worked, but I can tell you I damn sure wont be buying any of his games for my iPad.

SuperLupe4375d ago

It isnt gimmicky but you its far from being an exciting machine.

Sandmano4375d ago

Your hard to impress arent you? Current gen console graphics on the go isnt exciting? LOL!

Almir9084375d ago

@Sandmano The vita does not have current gen console graphics moron. No one game on the vita even looks remotely close to any multiplatform games on the PS3/360

Tito084374d ago

@Almir908-just because Vita is a little underpowered does not mean it doesn't have current gen graphics and specs when it really does, then there would be no point in making cross-platform play between PS3-Vita, and no point in sharing the same DLC, don't you think??? so if you think it doesn't have current gen graphics, neither last gen graphics, what is it then????

Unexpecta4374d ago

Molyneux's face is more gimmicky than the Vita.

aviator1894375d ago (Edited 4375d ago )

So, he leaves MS, criticizes kinect, and now vita. I can understand the criticisms of kinect through personal experiences, but the vita carries no such striking flaws that it warrants others to label it as a gimmicky device.

pandaboy4375d ago

it's actually pretty hilarious, if anything vita lacks a gimmick to help it sell.

kratos1234375d ago

wel peter what have you made in the past years that got everybodt talking? fable the journey LOL

green4375d ago

This is the 1st E3 after the launh of the Vita, i was expecting a lot of announements and info in regards to the future of the handheld because i am looking into getting one sometime this year. So what on earth happened? I was expecting Sony to showcase some unique to Vita games and experiences but nothing shown.

I don't follow Vita news that much and i know it is a great device but neglecting it at an event like E3 will not inspire confidence in some consumers. It sure as hell did not inspire confidence in me so i am afraid, i am not going to purchase one anytime soon.

InLaLaLand4375d ago

Me too, that's how I feel about the Vita situation. I get the feeling that TGS will show more Vita games like Soul Sacrifice. But I'm not holding my breath over it.

FriedGoat4375d ago

Yes, Yes and Yes.
I have a Vita and I was bitterly disappointed by E3.
They bring up a logo for COD and say its coming (we knew that already) they announce ASSCREED 3, it looks like a shell of the larger console versions. Playstation allstars looks boring and thats it. I dont know if sony really want to just carve their own name onto the gravestone but WONDERBOOK? 30 minutes of wonderbook and 5 minutes of vita, I really don't know how whoever thought up this presentation could be so RETARDED. Seriously.

InLaLaLand4375d ago

I said the Sony conference will be underwhelming but got a ton of disagrees. I guess I was right. If the PS4 is going to be like this, prepare to jump ship.

ceballos77mx4375d ago

@lalaland
Jump ship to what, its not like MS overwhelmed with games, as a gamer i liked Sonys conference (minus the book thing) and im considering geting the vita.

dboyman4375d ago

@ceballos77mx I think InLaLaLand was referring to Nintendo or PC gaming in this case..

THC CELL4375d ago

Kinect is a gimmick get outbox gaming retarded old turd

Peter Molyneux's new game is set in Fable's Albion

Project currently codenamed MOAT.

JusttJD0099226d ago

M.O.A.T

Misleader of all time?

jznrpg226d ago (Edited 226d ago )

It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil

Obscure_Observer226d ago

"It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil"

If Phil were the man that made my life miserable, I would vote for him as well.

Regarding the topic, it could be both Peter and Phil working together.

M.O.A.T takes place in Albion, so it´s possible that Pete is working on new partnership with Xbox, which imo, is nothing but great news!

GhostScholar225d ago

What exactly has Phil mislead about? I can’t wait to hear the verbal diarrhea you come with.

Cacabunga225d ago

Still waiting for Milo and Kate.. most lmao game OAT

Becuzisaid226d ago

Wait.

His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?

jznrpg226d ago

If anyone knows his name you have to be extremely skeptical that what he delivers will be anything like what he says it would be and that’s best case scenario.

RaiderNation226d ago

He's like the "Tom Clancy" of video games.

InUrFoxHole226d ago

Lol what the hell man?!?!?

Number1TailzFan226d ago

I remember Black & White (PC) but other than that I can only think of Fable, B&W was a pretty cool game tho at the time.

sagapo226d ago

Populous was another one designed by Peter, released before B&W, godlike game as well, pretty good too.

Giblet_Head226d ago

I quite liked Magic Carpet growing up.

Obscure_Observer226d ago (Edited 226d ago )

"His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?"

The guy is a gaming legend for gamers who actually knows and played his games, like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White and Fable for example.

Becuzisaid226d ago

I'm certain that most who actually know who he is would contest your use of legend. He's the living, human embodiment of false advertising.

Obscure_Observer225d ago

@Becuzisaid

There´s an abyss between false advertisement and bad games.

Most gamers will get excited for games from great gaming creators rather than focus on their exaggerated promises.

Kojima described his Xbox exclusive game as "very unusual like no one has ever experienced before, leveraging the cloud." He said all publishers he presented the project, called him mad and rejected his game but Microsoft, because it´s too crazy.

Is Kojima exaggerating? Obviously. It´s gonna be a bad game? Hardly.

Imagine a game where Peter Molyneux presents an extraordinary set of ideas that players will enjoy for years to come. Now imagine that this particular game will come out because it will never exist.

Profchaos226d ago

Does Milo live under a bridge there

shinoff2183226d ago

Captain overseller is returning. Ain't heard his name in years.

Peter Molyneux has high hopes for Playground's Fable

One of the biggest reveals at this year's Xbox Games Showcase was the latest Fable trailer. After a lengthy stint of silence, Playground Games gave us a look at bits of the title, albeit in a trailer that was mostly made up of CGI nonsense headlined by comedian Richard Ayoade, who is playing a rather frustrated giant.

Molyneux asked about what he thought about the Fable reveal.

he actually was in the news every now and then with a (couple) scam games he made

A failed hack designer has high hopes for Fable lol incoming flop confirmed!

Godmars290327d ago

Well, he's not associated with it. Giving interviews talking about features never at any point mentioned with devs let alone introduced.

It might have a chance.

Godmars290327d ago

Peter Molyneux: Hideo Kojima minus ability and skill.

Godmars290327d ago

Think you mean ethics.

Also, whose defending Molyneux? Wasn't his last game a literal ripoff with him offering a prize but not giving it?

KwietStorm_BLM327d ago

I wonder if those hopes are higher or lower than Milo?

Peter Molyneux's studio 22cans suffers layoffs

From GI.biz: "UK developer 22cans has suffered a round of redundancies, GamesIndustry.biz has learned.

The studio, founded by Fable creator Peter Molyneux, has laid off multiple employees, although an exact figure has not been disclosed.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, due to a number of factors including projects reaching a certain stage in their development, we can confirm that a number of roles at 22cans have been made redundant."

sourOG1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

Doesn’t that always happen with every studio lol? Contract workers for certain stages.

kythlyn1196d ago

I'm just surprised 22cans is still in business. They aren't communicating at all with their customers and they've abandoned their games in early access. Godus is still a mess that they're happy to keep selling without support. I kickstarted that game, and I have regrets.

Skywalker3331196d ago

Indeed, I was almost certain that they had closed down sometime ago :P

sourOG1196d ago

Wow that blows. I haven’t heard anything about them either, I just figured they were quietly working on something like ken Levine’s ghost story games.

Eamon1197d ago

Seriously, what is Peter Molyneux up to these days? In his prime, he was the most famous western developer in the world. Now he's doing f all.

njitram20001196d ago

If you look at the 22cans website...mobile games apparently

MasterChief36241196d ago

People became privy to his practice of promising big and delivering small. He is the perennial example of an artist that has huge ambition but not the resolve to follow through with those promises. I don't dislike him, as he has brought us some good games. But he is a constant punchline for me when I think of developers getting high and mighty.

Jericho13371196d ago

I saw an interview a few years ago saying he was inspired by the mobile gaming market and that anyone can become a “gamer”.

Such a shame, for all his critics he’s brought us some fantastic games and I’m sure he’d still be able to contribute something to the core gaming market.

lonewolf101196d ago

I'm surprised that they are still going to be honest.

fitofficial1196d ago (Edited 1196d ago )

They're not actually layoffs, they're fantastical multi-faceted journeys into lands of unimaginable unemployment giving the worker near-infinite freedom of choice.

jznrpg1196d ago

Yes . Classic Peter Molyneux
