Microsoft’s SmartGlass Seems Legit, But It’s No Wii U Controller

GameSpot- Microsoft is ever searching for ways to legitimize the Xbox 360 as more than a gaming console. Their latest announcement, SmartGlass, integrates your console with a phone or tablet with the Xbox 360 as a wireless remote and secondary monitor.

It lives on mobile devices as an app and they’re touting that your “Intelligent Companion” will turn any TV into a Smart TV, essentially allowing you to access web content from your couch. For some, this will prove to be a valuable tool in their media aresnal, but the gaming centric crowd might not benefit as much as Microsoft hopes. Then again, based on their presentation, that may have been their plan all along.

It’s natural to draw comparisons to the Wii U’s GamePad, but there are drastic differences. Firstly, the Wii U uses the touch screen controller as it’s primary means of input, negating the need to juggle devices. Take the Madden SmartGlass demo during the presentation--you pick up a tablet to choose a play, you put down the tablet and pick up your controller to execute the chosen play, and then pick up the tablet to restart the whole process again. That sounds like an unbelievable pain in the ass that gets in the way of the task at hand: gaming.

I don't think ms is getting enough credit for smart glass.

It has a lot of potential IMO.

Also, I'm pretty sure the wiiu pad is a resistive touch screen.

@Chuk5

Dont you know its "cool" to hate on the the popular kid, same way everyone hates on America? It's trendy and it wins you friends!

RedDead4350d ago

America is not full of Fat people?? Who are ignorant of the world outside America, only eat Hamburgers, hate muslims and love violence?

Orly?

banner4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

SolidSystem4350d ago

potential for what?

its not going to replace a controller, its going to help our devices interact, the same thing we have been doing with many other devices in the past. Air Play is not a new concept, though its a welcome addition to the 360s features.

am I going to be using my iPad to enhance my gears of war game? probably not. How about in my RPGs?

if MS was going to reveal some accessory that made a wiiU like tablet, with analog input I would see move value (but worry about the already taxed hardware under the 360s hood)

Neko_Mega4350d ago

It's a good idea, but it be better if their was more games and less non games.

dark-hollow4350d ago

The difference is Wii u game pad is integrated into the console itself, it's major part of the wii u, not an add on.

Besides, playing AND displaying information on the wii u can be done with the same controller while with smart glass you have to drop the controller, pick up your tablet!
Hell I really doubt theyll use it is a majore part of gaming because it'll be too much of a hassle.

StanSmith4350d ago

It's still a good idea in that Multiplatform devs can use some of the WiiU's tablet features on the other platforms though. It allows them to streamline the development.

It's no match for WiiU's tablet but it helps developers i suppose.

gamerben4350d ago

nah, pretty sure you can use your finger or a stylus. no limit.

supremacy4350d ago

no, its just a blueprint for the next xbox, which should arrived sometime next year.

Yangus4350d ago

No Wii U controller its true....only little?copy...

hellvaguy4350d ago

Funny you mention copy. Have you seen the new WiiU controller blantantly ripping the 360 controller?

Newsflash, they all do it.

yabhero4350d ago

I'm so sick of this... It has the same shape! So do Logitech and some other 3rd party control makers. The WiiU Pro has a different button layout that's Nintendo, a better joystick layout (360 has better ergonomic design, but PS3 joystick layout is much much better making WiiU pro best of both worlds). Different D-Pad and triggers, really it's just the shape.

DigitalAnalog4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

Did history slip past you by? Please, allow me to introduce the SNES controller:

"Oh... would you look at that? Diamond placement face-shaped buttons? HMMM... X Y A B? hmmm??? shoulder buttons.. hmm?? Oh what about the N64.. Analog sticks for controlling characters in 3D environment... NOOO... it can't be??"

Geez..

rob60214350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

ok since 360 uses it's own proprietary wireless system, I'm assuming this will run over wifi? If that's the case people may be in for a nasty surprise with the latency on this thing. Or am I wrong and their wireless works with Bluetooth?

I thought honestly Sony would push this type of thing first, and they still might because of Bluetooth support, might be a good idea with thin client gaming that's rumored. I already can control my ps3 from my ipad, but it would be nice to have a more functional app like smartglass. However most of the time it's probably a waste of time to even get the thing out for some small feature you don't really need.

ExPresident4350d ago

What kind of control do you use or I should say how do you control your PS3 with your ipad im curious.

thx

Windows 10 Xbox app gets Xbox One SmartGlass tech for future game streaming

Microsoft is migrating several functions formerly reserved for its Xbox One SmartGlass mobile app into the Xbox app for Windows 10, as it increasingly ties the Xbox One console to PCs and mobile devices. SmartGlass is a “second screen” app that was originally written for Windows Phone, allowing it, for example, to control aspects of a connected Xbox One.

--bienio--3338d ago (Edited 3338d ago )

I care more about cross buy then streaming, but for at the moment we Can only wait and see how things going on...anyway future is bright for Pc and xbox palyers;£

ScorpiusX3338d ago

Very cool , W10 is going to be a blast.

mhunterjr3338d ago

I don't have a gaming PC, but the idea of being able to play my Xbox from any room in the house, is very appealing to me!

Macdaddy713338d ago

I have been reading some threads people trashing MS for the streaming pc n x1.. But I love it!!! Going to lot better n more up to date games, then what Sony doing with ps now streaming Old games at a high price,.. I really think MS is going to nail the cross platform n streaming....

ThatOneRiggaNob3338d ago

People will trash Microsoft for anything they do. It's just the way this gen works. Also I don't see why you mentioned ps now since it's an actual streaming service and Xbox to win10 streaming is just you streaming your already owned games to a pc. They're not the same thing at all.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3338d ago

The streaming feature is definitely a positive. I have no idea why anyone would think that cross platform streaming would be a bad thing.

That was to be expected. Good job MS. Keep the great games and features coming. By next year, I wont be surprised if they say the Xbox can transform

JohnJ3541d ago

Everyone I know who owns an xbox one, Is absolutely loving it. I have both and love both but I have to be honest, the xbox one is the better console.

Bonkerz3541d ago

I have to agree, i play a PS4 daily (my bestfriend has one and we live next to eachother) and even when he comes here he is blown away with all the features and stuff that can be done on the X1. The PS4 is a great console obviously but at this point in time hands down the X1 is better choice.

4Sh0w3540d ago

That's really awesome, I use my Samsung Galaxy phone to constantly stay updated with Xbox news, love android and this is just 1 more way I can use my phone to interact with my X1 gaming addiction.

Assault93540d ago

Is their a point to this?
Oh I see, the future of no kinect.

timlot3541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

Its really amazing how much effort they are putting in the platform. Every other day there is news of this new feature or that update. Can't wait for what next week is going to bring.

PsylentKiller3541d ago

I teals like this feature. Since is play mostly at night while my GF is sleeping, it's difficult to get the kinect to hear me when whispering. Now, I can just tap my phone. This is also good if there is a lot of background noise.

tgunzz3541d ago

Xb1 has so much to offer... I hope more, and more gamers pick one up, and enjoy it awesome feature set, and games... Game on.

AutoCad3541d ago

Xbox All in one Entertainment.

I have the beta app and didnt even know this though lol
