Bungie Bans Valve, Epic, and Gearbox from Developing Destiny

Incorrect. "Licensor hereby expressly disapproves of Valve, Epic and Gearbox as potential third party developers for Conversions". If you look at the end of the contract, the Licensor is Bungie.

thrasherv34358d ago

Ah, that actually makes sense.

Getowned4357d ago (Edited 4357d ago )

It's all greek to me. Legal mumbo-jumbo eek. reading that makes me feel like im reading shakespeare, you only sort of understand it.

REALgamer4357d ago

Makes sense to have in the agreement.

From all reports, the (prior) heads at Infinity Ward weren't too happy about Activision handing Call of Duty over to Treyarch to develop in every 2nd year.

wicko4358d ago

Alex0501 is correct, it *is* Bungie.

humbleopinion4357d ago

It's Bungie, not Activision, and this makes sense: They don't want their biggest competitors in the FPS market working on porting their game (and only in the case Bungie doesn't want to port it themselves in the first place), because then they might have a conflict of interest: Valve, Epic, and Gearbox want first and foremost their own games to succeed, and working on a game from a competing franchise will probably take the back seat and will get less than perfect treatment.

This doesn't apply to Activision run studios of course: since they are fully owned by Activision they share the same interest in Destiny's success.
And it doesn't really matter actually: Can anyone actually see Valve working on porting a game made by another company!? They are pretty occupied with their own IPs...

mananimal4357d ago (Edited 4357d ago )

You mean Valve is to busy with full time promotion of DRM with STEAM, had they been about games, we would already have Episode 3 or Half Life 3.

humbleopinion4357d ago

Well, steam is Valve's IP ;)

But I heard there's gonna be some spectacular news about the upcoming Team Ricochet soon.

I don't get it. Why is Activision barring them from making Destiny? Why would Bungie let any of these companies make the game in the first place?

Zechs344358d ago

For the inevitable split between Bungie and Activision. They want to be able to control the IP themselves and won't allow any other publisher or developer to touch what could possibly be their next cash cow to milk for years to come.

Why do you think the specifically named those 3? Between Epic and Valve, you have some of the pioneers of the shooter genre and 2 of the biggest publishers out there today. And IMO, Gearbox makes great games and I think they might be the closest developer to Bungie when it comes to making a "sandbox shooter."

Idk. W.e. This whole Destiny thing is already ridiculous and we don't even know anything about it or what it might look like.

joab7774358d ago

Yeah, but companies are learning. Activision learned with MW that u must lock it up right now. I am just wondering why any company would allow someone to steal their ip? Isnt there a company that would allow them to keep it? I guarantee that west and zampellas deal with EA allows them to keep their ip. Anyway, microsoft basicallytells activision what to do, so its almost as if they let bungie go but struck a deal so that the first two games are still xbox exclusives, including the 720. This locks up exclusivity for next gen too w bungie. Yeah the thrid game may release for ps4 but anyone with a 720 will buy it for that.

Just doesnt seem like bungie is all that free after they created one of the biggest selling franchise ever.

vortis4358d ago

Ugh, the dark side of gaming.

I liked it better when devs made games they thought were cool, pubs seen it could make money and distributed it/covered some of the costs.

Nowadays there is more legal lingo and restrictions for a game no one knows anything about.

GraveLord4358d ago

Bungie has all rights to the Destiny IP, they just can't take it to a competitor.

Run_bare4357d ago

hehe.. i am sure someone in china already done it..

ApolloAdams4358d ago

This actually makes no sense because if Bungie is making the game why would these other companies even think about making the game? Can someone clarify this because that is like Microsoft banning EA, Ubisoft, THQ from making Halo as if they ever were.

iNcRiMiNaTi4358d ago (Edited 4358d ago )

My take on it is that they probably can't give their input on the game or something. In the Halo credits bungie always thanks certain companies because they probably helped out in some way

Titanz4358d ago

Bungie doesn't want any of them to have credit for what could potentially be, a game of the year candidate title.

s45gr324358d ago

I do not understand this article at all other than top notch game developers i.e. valve, epic games, and gearbox are banned from getting involved in anything related to proyect destiny.

Bungie Replaces Marathon Director Amid Leadership Shakeup, Fears of Layoffs

Amid ongoing anxiety within Bungie following layoffs last year, the studio is now preparing for another shakeup, this time on Marathon.

Kaii43d ago

Layoffs should be hitting the incompetent management at this point.

Profchaos43d ago

Talk about mismanaged Bungie is a studio of tremendous potential and have made some of the greatest shooters to date. Sony pushed them to just make another Destiny style game and consult on other studios live service games and are now getting thrown under a bus as the pivot away from predominantly gaas games is unfolding.

I'd love to see a world where Bungie can focus on telling great sci fi stories again away from a live service dungeon but we all know that's a pipe dream

Rynxie43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Are you serious? Do you just talk out of your arse naturally, or did it take years of being a POS?

Profchaos43d ago

You normally get so offended by internet comments or did it take years of being soft

purple10143d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Yes I see your point mate, someone clearly didn’t read the article.

Specifically the bit:

“Notably, multiple sources at the time and since have shared that Sony has largely left the studio to sort out its own troubles and was not responsible for the layoffs, with CEO Pete Parsons taking responsibility.“

He’s just spouting nonsense

Huey_My_D_Long43d ago

lol what so fucking hilarious is that you called him out so bad he projected him being offended onto you.

Its been well documented that Bungie's management has been more responsible for their shortfalls, even mentioned in said article that we are commenting on.

Its ok, just admit you didn't read the article.

MIDGETonSTILTS1743d ago

Arrowhead Studios will be Sony’s GaaS consult now.

Gameseeker_Frampt43d ago

I like how for some, it is never Bungie's fault. Microsoft, Activision, and now Sony - it is everyone else who is pushing Bungie to make all these bad decisions.

-Foxtrot42d ago

Thrown under the bus?

Are you joking? This is all Bungie, we all thought it was 100% Activision but it's clear the higher ups at Bungie don't have a clue how to run the studio and are more bothered about saving their own skin and the money that they rake in.

Sony gave them an extra $1.2 Billion to make sure that employees didn't leave and they didn't have to cut anyones jobs. Where did that money go because Bungie still cut peoples jobs and I bet you the higher management still kept a hold of their big fact paychecks and bonuses.

Sony invested poorly in this and the best thing they can do now is throw the old Bungie management out and take hold of the studio fully.

MIDGETonSTILTS1742d ago

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Somebody at Bungie is the golden goose making great shooting mechanics, and the rest need to justify their paychecks.

This studio has had three owners and its never worked well with any of them....Management has issues

ChasterMies42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Worked very well for Microsoft. Microsoft’s mistake was letting Bungie go.

Fearmonkey41d ago

it worked so well with MS that they so wanted to be away from them they bought the company back. Only to do it again with activision-blizzard, and then sold to Sony...Sony shouldn't have bought them...Bungie hasnt been the same for a long time..

As someone who bought every story DLC for DESTINY 2 but not every season. the first thing I would do as game director is , if anybody pre-orders The ?Final Shape , they will be able to play all older DLC and seasons with purchase of FINAL SHAPE. . I think that would bring back a lot of DESTINY 2 plsyers who have not experienced the seasons a chance to play season activities before Final Shape comes out.

DickyD122690d ago

I agree but I was just able to get all dlcs for 50 on steam. (Have it on PlayStation but don't always have access to the TV)
