Zune HD 3D games video hands-on

Engadget: "That Tegra chip is no joke -- the graphics in PGR: Ferrari Edition are easily on par with the PSP and quite possibly better, with intricate textures, high-quality reflections, and smooth framerates. The other games aren't nearly as intense, but they're just as smooth. Best of all? They're free -- although you will have to look at a Zune ad while they load. Not the worst tradeoff in the world, but we'd love to see what paid app developers could do if Microsoft would open this beast up."

1.1 - It's not like gaming is it's primary focus
But I do agree that the limited gaming functions are not much of a hook to traditional gamers.

1.2 - Don't be closed minded!
I'll admit, I understand what you think because I said the same thing. But my friend let me play some of the games on his iphone and even though most were crap, some stood out. For instance, he had some flying game similar to ace combat. You you tilt the phone to navigate and tap the left or right side of the screen to shoot missles or guns. Seems stupid at first but it was fun. The zune pgr looks the same. Tilt to steer while you hit the gas and brake in the lower corners of the screen.

The Zune HD was a letdown to me when I first saw it because i'd expected it to be a bit bigger with a larger screen, so I said i'll just keep my 30 gig. But now that I know they will have better games on the HD, my opinion of it is slightly better.

2 - Agreed
It just doesn't feel right without them for most games.

3 - Audio Surf and PGR
Are great on this! Audiosurf handles really well and PGR you have to get adjusted too, but either way these are great...and free :D

3.1 - I doubt...
I doubt I'll play them much but they are pretty, and free, so I'll keep them on my Zune for when I'm desperate for gaming. I'm also surprised how well they handle too.

The Tegra chip is on par if not better than the PSP processor so its not just due to screen size

Zune HD: 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED
PSP 3000: 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 Color TFT

@4.1
"on par if not better than the PSP processor"
You OBVIOUSLY know your stuff. REAL specific.

That's the size and resolution of the screen of each device. They have nothing to do with the processor. At least the screen size doesn't. The resolution does (not for the processor, but for the resolution the game runs in) and that's the same on both.

4.4 - @4.2
Screens size =/= processor

Also the PSP CPU speed is 333 MHz where as the Tegra can run at 750 MHz

4.5 - The Zune HD is indeed more powerful, BUT...
...we won't playing Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, LBP PSP, Resistance: Retribution, Syphon Filter, SOCOM, Ratchet, Monster Hunter, God of War, etc, etc, etc with nothing but tilt controls and a touchscreen.

I don't understand why all of these companies don't add a few buttons/directional pad, and end up limiting portable hardware.

"nice... smoothly changing subjects after getting owned"
I listed the resolutions for reference and thought his wording to what he originally said did not really point him actually having knowledge about either devices actual capacities.

And I stopped there because I didn't know either. I did NOT make a comment about its capacity.

Then went to research for myself and found out what I was pretty sure of; the Zune being more powerful (It IS the newer device, afterall).

And this is an article ABOUT THE GAMES. Bringing up games and controls for those games, is not changing the subject.

5 - It's a sodding music player
no directional buttons, no buttons, none of that crap. It doesn't need it. The games are there for the same reason the iPod has games. Not because it's a legitimate substitute for the PSP or DSI, but because people like options. Adding games to PMP devices lets people have their cake, and eat it too.
