BD Pounds HD-DVD In Year Sales To Date. Leads 2 To 1 According To Nielsen

Home Media Magazine has published the year to date sales according to Nielsen leading up to Nov 11th, 2007.

On page one you have the pie chart showing the year to date High Def Market Share. BD Leads HD-DVD 66:34.

One Page 11, you have the ratios of the best selling titles so far in the High Def Market. Again, the ratios work by seeing what is the top selling title and then the others are relative to that. So if the number one spot sold X number of copies then second spot sold X times the percentage ratio of second place.

2. Transformers HD-DVD - 67.57
3. 300 HD-DVD - 52.84
4. Casino Royale BD - 51.83
5. The Departed BD - 33.79
6. POTC:DMC BD - 33.68
7. Planet Earth HD-DVD - 30.71
8. POTC:COBP BD - 29.79
9. Planet Earth BD - 29.19
10. Apocalypto BD - 26.70

First glance shows 7 BD titles in top ten versus 3 HD-DVD titles. 300 was the highest selling aggregate title. Transformers being an HD-DVD exclusive clearly has had an affect. What is surprising is the small ratio difference between planet earth hd-dvd and bd. Previously it was believed to be selling much higher on hd-dvd.

Blu-Ray is better and not all people are retarded like people who like HD-DVD. In fact, i will go as far as saying people who support HDDVD are worse than retarded. Even a retard would pick more of something(in this case, space) then less. Dont believe me? give a retard a choice between 1 scoop of ice cream and 2 scoops. Im pretty sure he/she will pick the 2 scoops. HDDVD people are basically empty people shells with no brain matter what so ever. This is not my opinion, but a fact.

Blu-Ray is not better, it just sells better. There's nothing wrong with keeping it that simple. There's nothing wrong with supporting the format either, but it can be done with intelligent conversation and actual points too rather than using examples of "retards and ice cream."

Of course, a lot of people have some restraint and pay for what they're hungry for instead of being wasteful. Some can control their impulses enough to avoid paying a premium for a modest increase.

Seriously, I don't support a winner in this war, but that was about the worst metaphor I can imagine on this subject and it throws a third grade lack of sensitivity to people who are different than you in the same breath.

5 - BR had a forced first start b/c of PS3 but oveall HD-DVD is and will be the accepted format. Mainly price.

The HD-DVD camp claim that hardly any PS3 users know it plays dvd's & Blu-ray yet YOU CLAIM its because of PS3 BD'S sell better I wish that HD-DVD promoters & users could try and get the FACTS correct. PS3 has dropped in price 2 of my family bought one after seeing mine had people over saturday night one of them wants me to install his when he buys one because it does the LOT. When people find out its A GAMES CONSOLE HD,WI-FI,CD,DVD,SACD and internet browser and soon to be a PVR it makes sense, then the discs are same price AS HD-DVD, ITS A DONE DEAL.

9.1 - Actually, Microsoft is more involved with HD-DVD than you think.

HD-DVD relies on HDi, which is technology that Microsoft tried to replace Java with and succeeded on HD-DVD. They tried to force it into Blu-ray through Hewlett Packard, but that obviously didn't work since Java's used for Blu-ray instead. They also tried to convince the Blu-ray and HD-DVD associations to exclusively support Windows Media Video 9 (a.k.a. H.263 or VC-1) for the movies. HD-DVD flicks are strictly WMV-9 format while Blu-ray titles are usually MPEG-4, a superior open format headed by Apple, though a few flicks are MPEG-2 or WMV-9. Depends on who distributes the movie.

Toshiba actually was planning to call it quits in 2006, but Microsoft pumped a lot of money back into the format, and it's the reason why there is so much Microsoft technology (and royalties) within HD-DVD players and the movies themselves. Hell, they even funded the Paramount exclusivity deal, which the media and public still finds laughable to this day. Paramount should have agreed to 3~4 times that much considering the amount of money they're losing on Blu-ray releases. Globally, Blu-ray titles sell about 3~4 times greater than their respective HD-DVD counterparts, and the ratio keeps increasing.

WTF are you talking about? VC-1 is a superior codec to MPEG-4. MPEG-4 was introduced back in the 90's while VC-1 is an evolutionary step above MPEG-4. At the beginning of this format war, HD DVD used VC-1 and multiplatform movies were compared on both where HD DVD had the upper hand and looked better. Now Blu-ray has adopted VC-1 codec and the quality is even.

H.264 is the MPEG-4 codec I was referring to, and yes, it's superior to WMV 9, which is also labeled as VC-1. Some Blu-ray titles are in WMV 9, as I stated, but the majority are in MPEG-4 H.264.

I think you're confusing MPEG-2 with MPEG-4. MPEG-2 is an old format, while MPEG-4 is more recent. Either way, ALL movies have their digital masters stored in MPEG-2 format due to the low amount of compression and high quality. MPEG-2 does take a lot more space than H.264 though, which is why so many Blu-ray titles are now in H.264. Uncompressed PCM Audio takes up a LOT of space, and even 50GB isn't all that much (thus the research into 75GB and 100GB Blu-ray discs).

1. HDi wasn't 'forced' on the DVD forum. I'm sure MS, like ANY company, leveraged as much sway as they could but in the end it was VOTED in. That's the whole point of the forum! You don't think Sony tried to 'force' the forum to adopt Blu-ray over HD DVD? The DVD forum VOTED for HD DVD too.

2. HD DVD titles are mostly VC-1 because licensing is cheaper and the licensing terms were finalized earlier (in good time for the HD DVD launch). At first glance, the licensing looks the same until you see the enterprise cap (like a blanket fee). VC-1 is $8M/yr until 2010. AVC is $11M/yr until 2008, $11.5M/yr until 2010.

3. VC-1 and AVC both evolved out of the MPEG 4 Part 2 standard and are considered very similar in quality per bitrate standards.

4. Blu-ray is usually AVC? Try 34% of Blu-ray titles are AVC. And since you are going on and on about you 'think' AVC is better, I'd like to point out that 39% of Blu-ray titles are using the dated MPEG 2 CODEC. Kind of like how people go on and on about how much better the audio is on Blu-ray even though 30% of titles use the dated Dolby Digital CODEC isn't it?

VC-1 was introduced in 2006 by Microsoft and is not a lessor format. You're referring to AVC and MPEG-4 part 10 which made it's debut back in 2003 where I don't see any indication it was "headed by Apple", but rather the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) together with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as the product of a collective partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). Ahem *straightens nerd glasses* Yeah, that was totally copy/pasted. Haha

However, non of this bullsh1t matters because both Blu-ray and HD DVD have adopted and regularly use both codecs (VC-1 and MPEG-4 part 10). Mmmmmmmm'kay?

All of the top ten are rentals only in my opinion - yes they provide some fantastic entertainment but not a lot of repeat viewing. Where are all the classics?????

This again is a situation where studios will hold off releasing the real cash earning titles until there is more of an install base to sell them to. I also wonder if we'll get that same crapy situation where the same titles will be released again in 12-24 months as special or deluxe editions like we did with DVD.

I personally believe that Disney is the key for the success of the format war. I think Whoever got Disney on their side will win the disc sales and therefore win the war. The reason behind that is the fact the people who buy (not rent) movies are mostly parents. They buy movies for their kids, since kids can watch the same movie 100 times and not get bored of it. I think all other movies 300, Die hard, .... are not as important as Disney animations, because few adults buy the movies, they usually rent them, why would you want to buy a movie if you are not gonna watch it over and over again... Since Disney is at Blue Ray side, Blue ray will stay on top. I think Toshiba made a huge mistake when they paid the 150 m to paramount. I think they should have paid that much or even more to Disney....

Well, in that case it would have been a totally different story. You know that Toshiba lose money on every system they sell below cost and they have been doing so for a while now. On the other hand sony loses money on PS3s. I doubt they lose money on the stand alone BR Players. I think Sony has all the reasoning by their side to win this format war, if not in the short run but in the near future... Since prices will drop on both systems eventually...and because of PS3, Blue Ray will stay in the equation. Unlike the betamax case...
