Sony: PS3 dramatic sales increase won't reflect in NPD

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer is giving a little tease about Sony's current PS3 sales numbers before NPD lays down the law later today with the October data. Stringer says that in the two weeks prior to Nov. 11, they sold 100,000 units per week.

However, the NPD group will only reflect data for the month of October, which saw the PS3 selling between 30K and 40K per week, according to Stringer. Sales only expectedly jumped after the introduction of the 40GB model on Nov. 2.

Contradict himself? 2 weeks prior to nov 11 would put it in the month of oct for the final couple of days. Although when they say sell they mean to suppliers not what goes after that, example sony sells it to walmart then after that they dont track it cause they have made there money already. Anyway full effect should be seen in nov npd for those that are intarested.

I get what the author is trying to say, but it is poorly written and doesn't make sense at all:

That means around three days of October. Three is under half a week. A lot of people might have waited a few days. You have to look at a full month, not three days. And really, you have to look at the whole Christmas season.

C'mon guys, there are two scales at work here, weekly, and monthly. The NPD reports up until Oct. 31 maybe? So, with the new PS3 being released on the 2nd, of course it won't be included.

The other scale is weekly. One week ending November 4, which includes 2 days (EDIT: or maybe 3 actually) of the new PS3 sales, and the other ending Nov 11, which includes a full 7 days of the new PS3 sales. With most sales occuring on the first couple of days, it makes sense.

But yeah you're right. These people are making it more complex than it seems.

The 40gb model was only out for 3 Days in October thus it is not going to make much of a weekly impact (less than half the week). And even less of a monthly impact (less than 1/10th the month).

So what Stringer is saying is to gauge the impact of the 40gb ps3 look at Nov's number not October's.

Benign curiosity: What's the root of your undying, consistent anger towards all objects and lifeforms?

Normally, I wouldn't ask nor care, but I can't help but inquire. Because, contrary to the rest of the overwhelming and ever-increasing unsubstantiated blabber on this site, I can't help but sense that you acquire a hefty asset useful common sense underneath all that, uh...Rage.

I've got a low tolerance level for stupidity as much as the next level-headed guy, but when you just hate for the sake of hating, then everything looks bleak, and you'll inadvertently miss out on some great opportunites as a result...as is the case with the exponentially-appealing PS3.

And if the PS3 continues to not tickle your fancy, then just let it be...unless of course, the black behemoth has f*cked your wife, killed your dog, and set your house ablaze.

i think my rage started at an early age, and built up with each comment I read from sony fanboys regarding anything to do with sales figures :)

every time a story comes out of how the ps3 outsold the 360 in one week, or sales increased of the ps3 due to a price drop or whatever, every sony fanboy jumps on here with the typical comments like "see, the ps3 is gonna steam roll the 360" or one of my favorites "the juggernaut has been awaken!"....

instead of writing these dumb comments, i have recommended in the past that sony fanboys should actually wait until actual sales figures are released for the entire month. i have commented over and over again when stories like these come out that everyone should wait, because a sales increase after a price drop is a no-brainer, but whether or not it is sustained over a longer period is the true indicator of actual sales momentum building for a particular console. not one week of great sales and then slipping back to nothing, but actual maintained sales.

so hopefully that was the answer you were looking for.

How was he wrong ?? The PS3 did have a big boost in sales that month..but it didnt last long..As I see it right now the PS3 sales will continue to increase at a fast rate through out the end of this year and 0'8 because of the new 40GB SKU and all of the big exclusive games dropping . Such as MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, White Knight Story, War Devil, Heavy Rain, Tekken 6, Killzone 2 Eight Days, Gateway 3, New Team ICO game, Socom and etc.

All these game will make sure the PS3 sales will stay strong..

Except that 1/2 of the games you listed are likely not going to ship in 2008. More "just wait" from Sony.

Seriously, I want a PS3... the price is finally within the ballpark, and there are finally games (HS, Uncharted, R&C) that I want to play. I'd say by mid-2008 I'll be picking one up.

But that doesn't mean that PS3 has a chance in hell of catching up to the Xbox 360. They're like 10m units behind! I realize the Wii made a move to the top, but let's face it, it became one of those "must have" purchases. It doesn't matter what games the PS3 gets, it's not gonna capture that kind of mindshare.

PS2 had it in the last gen, and Wii got it in this gen.

Sony claim to have sold well in the first two weeks of November, and I'm sure they probably have.
To point out that figures for October will obviously not reflect this, is obvious and not worthy of story.

i bashed the original xbox but 360 was a real improvement even with the hardware failures... but yea i;m the same, i'm a fan but i understand wats goin on and i kno ps3 will make a come back but i just think they need to get more first party games cause having alot of multiplatform games hurt the system more than it helps, but thats just my opinion. i can explain why i said that just disagree with me i;ll elaborate
