Hitachi confirms 100 gig Blu-Ray disc compatibility with existing Blu Ray Players

This is just to dispel some confusion surrounding the compatibility of 100 gig Blu Ray discs on existing Blu Ray players including PS3. With a firmwire update all the existing Blu Ray players including ps3 could also be made to play the 100 gig Blu-ray discs.

Here is the official statement from Afterdawn:-

"To sweeten the pot even more, Hitachi says the discs are compatible with existing Blu-ray players and drives after an easy firmware update. "

The much anticipated 200 gig Blu-Ray disc is also on the way to make inroads against the competition . Afterdawn further reports :-

"Hitachi says they are now working on "improving the signal quality of its quad-layer technology" so that it can be ready to hit the market soon. The company also boasted that they were working on a eight-layer Blu-ray disc capable of storing 200GB of data. "

And with the PS3 supporting HDMI 1.3, that is completely possible (@ 30fps)...

So 9 years from now, your PS3 will still be viable as a Blu-Ray player on Quad-HD displays... ;-)

a future with 100 gigabyte dics....damn i could back up my whole computer on one of those beauties.............i'd be able to have tons of movies on one blu ray.....i'd be able to play games holding 100 gigabytes of data....wow.

about your comment involving the games/movies. It depends on what the creator wants to create. Kojima-san even stated once that he wanted more space on the Blu-ray disc. Now I'm not saying it wouldn't cost more to manufacture, possibly costing us more. But time will tell bro. The future is not for us to speak of as if it's present. They are creating these discs for a reason. What reason? It's up to the developers.

While what you say is true, over time everything cost less to make I don't think even with in the next 2 years this will be "need" being that the 25GB or the 50GB are cheaper. But in the future we could very well seee a game taking up 100GB.

at the very least a game developer could make a universal game with all the languages on one disk saves money (for the time being until they add a helluv a lot more content) then they could still just add a whole lot more maps or how about every game has an intensive map editor. if i am a great game devolper id like this alot.

OMG! 100gig?? I'm still using a 40 gig in my pc.... :S It will be awesome to see if developers use this for compelations and whatnot like a compilation of all the Final Fantasys or something. A game this size would be amazing but I dont see that coming for a while yet....anyways. Wow!!

It might take a while before 100GB is needed for games.
But in the Movie/Series games it's needed now.

Think of releasing all Seinfeld's/Friends on one or two dics.
Why make Lord of the rings trilogy on 3 discs when you can do it on one.

Because people would except 1 disc to be cheaper than 3 separate ones. Why charge say 50$ for all 3 when you could charge 80%. But hot damm it would be cool if they were on only 1 disc. And its great for TV series, but for movies well I don't think so.

For anyone that thinks this disc will not be needed a little info for you heavenly sword used over twenty gigs.and that is only a eight hour game.So how large is a game like final fantasy XIII going to be.Considering how good the game already looks and the fact that its Final Fantasy game it could very well fill this one hundred gig disc.Like someone said there is a reason for this disc,its already being needed.

The future of console gaming is heading toward full game installs not 100 gig media. It wouldn't be long before you buy a PS3 game, do an install on your PS3 and only use the disc to play cutscenes. If Warhawk is any indication the future is already here.

But, the problem with digital distribution is..... games that are bigger in file size than say.... warhawk (only 800mb) would take pretty long to download for normal people who dont have/cant afford T1... Imagine downloading a game like MGS4 on a 256kb connection! Using a disk to play cutscenes? Why would a company bother making a game formatted for the PS3's hard drive and spend the money putting it on PSN, then releasing a retail disk with all the cutscenes. The game would not sell.

It will be a very long while before digital distribution occurs. Maybe when everyone has T1 or something faster can it happen.... I dont want to download something thats 50gb over the internet... even on T1 that would still take a very long time, while most people are able to just drive to the store and get it for the same price, faster than it would take to download.

and it only requires a firmware update. That's what you call progress. Take that, 51 GB HD DVD disc. It's now clear that Blu ray is the way to go.

One of these days PS3 games may require another disc so this will be perfect. I also wouldn't mind the original Star Wars trilogy on one BD. Oh you know it's coming one of these days.

imagine a GAME(like oblivian) that you can play, where your chracter ages right before your eyes and the surroundings change they become aged also and the weather or seasons change from summer to fall then winter, a game that has "high replay value" that you never get tired of because you keep building skills, or friendships to help you in your quest, instead of a game lasting hours of gameplay, to where you play for months...this game will last years. The build in drive holds 8.5 GB. The External add-on HDDVD holds upto 30GB but can not be used for games.

Clarification: The HD-DVD add on can be used for games, but MS won't, because they don't want to alienate certain consumers that have the drive and the masses that don't. It's capable, just not a practical option for MS right now.
