Sony shines Blu-ray on PS3 sales campaign

Sony is to step up its marketing campaign for the PlayStation 3 and emphasise that the game console is a Blu-ray disc player.

The move is aimed at boosting both the PS3 and the Sony-backed DVD format ahead of the Christmas holiday sales season.

Kaz Hirai, president of the games unit, told the Financial Times his division was working closely with Sony Pictures and Sony Entertainment to "get the Blu-ray message out". It was a delicate "balancing act" for Sony Computer Entertainment,

"The PS3 is first and foremost a video games machine but we want to say – by the way, it's a great Blu-ray player as well," Mr Hirai said. Marketing efforts in the US, Europe and Japan would highlight the PS3 as a Blu-ray disc player as well.

Actually, one of the things that I've criticized Sony for since launch is NOT advertising the blu capabilities of the PS3... most ppl don't even know! People need to know the benefits of the product to understand the value of it.

It doesn't mean that they should focus on blu ray and drop the ball on advertising games (which they actually need to increase ad money on also in my opinion). It means that they need to increase ad $ advertising both of these features!

I mean they have been offering 5 free blu-ray movies to people who buy the PS3 for the longest, do you honestly think people haven't picked up on that? BTW, I read an article on N4G earlier today stating that they were gonna focus less on the Blu-ray/Media capabilites and focus more on the games. Guess Sony is a little confused about what target audience they want to go after.

You shouldn't be putting attention on secondary aspects of your console until later in its life.

Sony is saying the games will be good in 6 years, and in the mean time, its a bluray player, the reverse of what it should be.

They've set themselves up for failure in so many different ways, and this is the most obvious, pushing that the PS3 is a bluray player before the war is over and most people are unwilling to commit.

Secondary features can help make the decision, but Sony doesn't say much about the games. Talk about the games for your game mechine, not how it can play bluray, which the majority of people don't want to commit to yet.

The PS3 needs games to get most people to buy it. A lot of people like to talk about attach rates (mostly 360 people, but I've seen Sony fanboys say things about it, too), and the PS3 has the lowest attach rate this gen, so far. Lowest install base and attach rate does not help Sony's cause of getting good exclusives, which every console needs. Pushing bluray doesn't help that situation at all.

And where exactly have you been for the last year... the ONLY thing they tout publicly are the games coming to the sytem... They didn't even talk about blu ray during their E3 presentation!

What disgusted me about their marketing is that they had a spot on Fox News for the launch of their system and got to showcase one of their games on the only 100" flatscreen HDTV (at the time anyway)... the news hosts were talking up how great HD was before Sony came on.... and they did NOT even mention that their system allows you to watch HD Movies on your new HD toys!!! That's just gross marketing neglect.

You DO NOT wait until years later when your technology is no longer cutting edge to talk about it. You obviously do not have much business sense.

@2.1- you're right. Sony doesn't even have to stress the games anymore... they just have to keep advertising as they come out. All of the haters that talk about 'no games' really have nothing left to say b/c the steady flow of quality games has already started for PS3 gamers... and guess what? They don't stop until whenever the gaming drought starts in 08... and even then the PS3 has the best lineup that we know of so far! Games just aren't the issue anymore... time to educate the public on why it costs an extra $100.

sony is monster with way too many heads, they can't seem to find a message and stick with it.

the advertisement for ps3 is like non existent, MS is good at seeing what's going on and reacting accordingly i.e. the pay less, play more campaign.

i don't see why it's so hard to market a great piece of hardware like the ps3, they should market it as a great gaming machine with a great blu-ray player inside and use the fact that it can play games from the gigantic ps1/ps2 library and if they wanted to take a cheap shot at the competition they could even use their great hardware reliability in their ads.

but even with everything i mention they still won't see a steady increase in sale until they drop the price.

There's nothing wrong with appealling to different markets.

So what if one ad says Lookat this games console, it can play BR's while another ad says Look at this BR player, it can play computer games.

The most important thing is getting the information out there so more people know the capabilities of the PS3.

Nearly half the people on the planet would have heard of a Playstation and know it's a games console. Apparently not many know it plays BR's, so what the problem with hyping that up a bit. Its only Xbots that seem to have a problem with it doing more than its primary function. I guess you guy all own Cell phones with no cameras or MP3 support because you only want one device to do one thing.

Its also funny to hear the bots call PS3 a movie player only, not a games machine, all the while XBL has movies, TV shows, music videos. OMG does that mean it cant play games? Shock Horror.

Anyway when I get home from work I might play a couple more hour on Heavanly sword, cook some dinner and then watch Spiderman on BR. You can complain about PS3 all you like, I'm too busy enjoying it.

You really have no clue what you are talking about do you? Of course there is a small bit of truth in your posting, the xbox as a dvd movie player is a afterthought. I mean come on, the internal DVD drive is so loud people associate it with a small jet engine, and the USB external HD movie player which does not output high quality audio or video, yet Microsoft chooses to charge 170+ for the thing. Yeah, have fun defending that.

Sony is making a very smart move here to kill the HD-DVD format while everything is still "new". There is a format war going on, you can bury your head in the sand till your butt gets sunburned for all the rest of us are concerned. The games are coming, but you already know that, you just want to sling dirt around trying to get people to listen to you. For that I am truly sorry.

Xboxers, please do not think I am being negative to the system, but directing my attention to the little man trying to make a big noise. I have a Xbox, and love it, and when I tire of playing it, I start up the PS3 and play Ridge Racer and Warhawk. The 360 does get more attention...all my frinds at work have one (32 at last count), but anyone saying the Playstation is not first and formost a gaming machine just really needs to get off their soap box. Those of us that own BOTH systems know better! And as 10.2 states, trying to push a point from EA's poor handeling of the PS3 hardware on a initial release is hardly food for thought.

The new advertising campgain for Blu-Ray is much needed, we have all seen the TV comercials for the PS3 gaming system, but nothing telling that it is also great for movies. Will you Mom or Pop buy one...I think no, but will it help push a casual gamer from one system to another...possibly.

I have a PS3 ... but Im not fooling myself, this puppy is all about the movies and the games for it, so far, are average at best - AND all the multiplatform games for it are getting rated LOWER then their 360 counterparts.

By the time Sony gets their act together with their games and online plan - Im thinking 2 years from now, MS will start rumbelings and building hype for its next console.

Oh wait, I could care less about have to get up every 11 hours. Anyways my biggest grip out of all of this is that, for one reason or another, I keep reading that HD is the next best thing since sliced bread.

Never mind that say 99& of the TV owning world does not have an HDTV and the most thrown about number 1080i/p only really matters if you have a 52. And honestly how many people do you know have anything bigger than a 32 inch, and for the love of god don't respond with "only poor people blah blah".

Moving on to my point, I don't want the best thing, well I do, but I would never pay the premium for it. Thats why I and most of the U.S. shop at Wal-Mart, they don't have the best but they sure as hell have something close enough to it for 1/2 the price.

I forgot your guys dont' have Remote play Via PSP. For PS3. if i were to do remote play on PS3 games in the future, i am sure i can't physically go change my disc half way across the globe. I am glad it will most likily fit on just one bluRay so i can leave it there, turn it on with my PSP via remote play and play the whole game across remote play.

It bothers my just how quickly the xboxers are to throw jabs at the PS3 console and when that doesn't work they go after the "followers" like it is a cult thing or something. How many delays did GOW go through before being released? How about Mass Effect? Or the Xbox's chipset itself, now almost a full year behind moving to the 65nm process! And lets look at those games...pretty much everyone agrees that GOW is one of the 360's best titles. After 2 years, it is pretty much the cream of the crop, and not even a full year, the PS3 already has Resistance and Heavnly Sword. Granted, the gameplay might not be there for the PS3, but graphicaly, they are a step above the 360. So right out of the gate the PS3 is showing great potential. Could we please stop with the pissing match?

Both of these systems are just as much at home in the livingroom as any stand alone component, just the PS3 does a better job of it. The 360 can do HD-DVD movies, the PS3 does Blu-Ray...fine, lets look at pricing...

Hardware, Xbox 360 prem = 399.00
add the hd-dvd = 175.00
total = $574.00

PS3 with built in Blu-ray = $599.00

The 360 is on shakey ground when trying to compete as a movie player, and if you want the Elite, look to spend 459.00 for the system and you just payed more for the 2yr old Xbox that will not display video at 1080p (from the addon) and does not output HD audio. And please, don't moan about its audio output being dolby digital...that is 5.1 surround, True HD audio is 7.1 and something the Xbox is just incapable of doing yet the PS3 does both very well.

There is nothing wrong with Sony starting to hype up the blu-ray system of the PS3, after all they are betting the farm that it takes off. And as for dvd being fine for games, sure, current gen games, but the PS3 is next gen, and Killzone2 is supposed to use 2gigs of space for each level! 2gigs per level! That is going to be very cool!

All Sony does is boast about Blu-ray movies; Blu-ray space for future games and how they will have games that will be far more advanced. No one cares they moved on Popular Opinion has shifted from the PlayStation brand.

PS's fanbase is made up of large amounts of casual gamers that can careless about brand loyalty only price and games.

The 100 million people willing to play games every once in a while are not waiting for the PS3 to get its act together but are waiting for a console thats cheap with games to come into reach.

I'm telling you people! consumer trend and mainstream opinion is almost as powerful as the software to a company.

Doens't even make anysense that Sony thinks Casual consumers that made up most of its fanbase" care about large games; more than games in general, when they wern't even buying games considering the size of the PS2 base and the ratio of software purchase.

Then to go so far as to assume the millions apon millions that purchased for under $200 bucks have the money or care about HD or BD movies when they(PS2 masses and others) don't even own HDTV's.

Million waited for PS3 to launch because of what Sony was saying(5X more powerful, PS3 launch tittles will out perform 360 through out the 360's life time)when PS3 launched this wasn't the case, people do wan't the best where it counts or for the reason they buy something.

PS3 will have problems untill the PS3 games start getting more complex like 360 games and leave them in the dust graphically and gets cheaper than the 360.

I think Nintendo fanboys thought the same thing about N64 and the gamecube, CB was hurt by stradigy(games and sh*t) and Popular opinion shifting from Nintendo's brand.
