72% of PS3 owners own Blu-ray movie

It's clear that the next-gen movie format wars are shifting towards a victor. New data from Home Media Research shows that Blu-ray is gaining significant momentum, selling twice as many discs in the first half of this year than HD DVD. Sales of Blu-ray disc movies totaled 1.6 million units, compared with 795,000 HD DVD discs. Over the course of both formats' lifetimes, Blu-ray has about a 1 million unit advantage. The math doesn't make sense. If there are roughly 4 million PS3's out there and then 2.5 million divided by 4 million is only 62.5%.

And that's assuming that no one who owns a stand alone player doesn't own a disk. And that each PS3 owner only own one movie.

they also give 5 free hd-dvd's morons. 300 was a movie that pretty much appeals to the same audience as gamers so these gamers went out and purchased 300. its that simple. I predict 300 will be the highest sellin blu ray movie for the yr or maybe spidey 3 can top it. am waiting for spidey 3 and pirates of the carribean 3 2 drop so i can buy trilogies hahaha. and WB needs to hurry up with matrix so i can trilogy cop dat 2

15 - If true the SDTV to HDTV ratio is stellar which I doubt will be that much different from the 360 ratio.

Blu-ray DVD player in PS3 vs HD-DVD add-on player and XBL Video marketplace. Yet some how more PS3 owners have HDTV's. Most the PS3 fans on this site do not own a PS3 let alone a HDTV.

I have a PS3 with 5 Blu-Ray movies (I bought 4 of them, one came with the PS3) and two HDTV's (one 32" and one 42")

Ok I honestly dont care what format wins. I would be curious to know if this Blu-ray sales figure is being calculated similar to how people are calculating Wii sports sales. In otherwords....movies that are packed in and sold as part of a bundle are considered "sold". I have always thought the Wii sports sales number was bogus...after all...you buy the Wii you dont have a choice ...you automatically are sold Wii Sports so to speak. So looking at the PS3, does this figure include Taladega nights and all the movies that were recently offered up in the "bundles" that Sony has been doing? If so...I would say the Blu-ray lead while still a lead is a little misleading.

i own a PS3, and i also own a 40" Samsung 720p set. the set can *ALSO display at 1080i (which is what i had it running in until last month). whenever i would watch a Blu Ray movie when the settings were 1080i, it ran the movie at 1080i. when i ran it at 720p, it ran it at 720p, so i think your TV will be fine. thanks to that update, the PS3 will scale to whatever your *MAX RESOLUTION is, on both Blu Ray discs, and PS1 and PS2 games.

i own 6 Blu Ray movies, and i'm certainly buying more.

to the fellow who asked about upgrading his DVD collection: *DON'T.

i'm not upgrading *ANY of the films i already own, unless it's something that i really, *REALLY want to have in HD (ie, i already own the first two Spider-Man films on DVD, but i'd love to have the complete trilogy in HD, because those movies look *FANTASTIC in high definition). everything else i own on DVD will just have to be upscaled DVDs.

basically, animated features, and summer blockbusters are getting the HD treatment in my household. anything else, i may pick up in DVD, at least until Blu Ray prices drop to DVD prices (about $14.99), then it won't matter, and i'll buy all Blu Ray discs.

i own Resident Evil: Apocalypse (for my fiance), Silent Hill (for me), Pirates of the Caribbean (for both of us), The Departed (for me), Mission Impossible 3 (for me, and i'll buy the first two later), and Casino Royale (for me). the Harry Potter series, first two X-Men movies, Pixar movies, and the Spider-Man movies are all being purchased on Blu Ray the moment they become available. i'm completely *HOOKED on HD content now, and can't get enough; games *AND movies.

upscaling just doesn't *COMPARE to a true HD remastering. i think *BOTH the HD DVD and Blu Ray camps can agree on *THAT.

We've watched a ton of rentals also. I highly reccommend "Curse of the Golden Flower" It's subtitled, but visually spectacular.

The 5 free ones are in the works to head my way.

I too cannot see someone buying a PS3 without knowing about blu-ray. I believe it's happening, but it's mind-boggling.

My wife and I really enjoyed it. It's subtitled, but there isn't really a lot of speaking parts and I really got into the story, which is well crafted fiction, with historical elements thrown in and a little voodoo that could be distracting if you don't care for that type of thing.

Most of it takes place in dense jungle, and there are parts you're eyes will bug out with how high quality the 1080p make it.

I own a stand-alone HD-DVD player, stand-alone Blu-Ray player, 717 DVD discs, 21 HD-DVD discs and 5 Blu-Ray discs. I run an Optoma HD81 1080p DLP projector on a 120" Stewart Firehawk screen with a NAD 7.1 receiver and PSB speakers including two dual-10" woofers.

I am the first to admit that I am a huge videophile. The majority of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD releases are indestinguishable in terms of quality however some of the larger HD-DVD releases take advantage of the Thomsons Film Grain Technology (titles like Apollo 13 for example) which gives the movie a smoother film like composure which is lost through the use of compression codecs and although it is only a small step in quality, it is immediately noticable (atleast on my setup) so I buy HD-DVD whenever I have a choice.

In my opinion, the only outcome of this 'format war' is dual format players. Both sides have profitable positions and significant amounts of exclusive content and unlike the gaming industry, a single device is capable of playing ALL content. The 'format war' won't be resolved this holiday season and by next season dual format players will be cheap enough to have completely diffused the situation.
