Beware the 'Sony buying Rockstar' rubbish

The kids are waving their rumour flags again this morning, sending the internet on fire (the naive part, anyway) with claims that Sony Computer Entertainment is about to buy GTA house, Rockstar.

It sounds like another example of a fan's wet dream to CVG.

In summary; it wouldn't make sense for Sony, it wouldn't make sense for Take Two and it wouldn't make sense for Rockstar.

Rockstar expectedly told CVG, "we don't comment on rumour or speculation", and this time CVG thinks it's actually because they're following protocol, and not because there's a bigger story hiding under the cloth. Although it wouldn't hurt to just come out and say it's all bollocks, would it?

I agree MasterG. (hey that rhymes.)

CVG are being very co cky, adamant and downright rude for someone who doesn't actually know anything, and are just guessing.

And the deal makes more sense for all parties then they are letting on. Why wouldn't it be good for Sony, not just now, but for next gen too. I dont think R* had any problems selling games on PS hardware. PS would become known as the console to have for R* fans. And as for why would T2 get rid of them? You might be surprised. Just about all the trouble T2 are in now goes back to R* and Hot Coffee, not to mention Manhunt 2. And its not like R* is all they have.

Anyway like MasterG said I dont know either way, but neither do CVG. They sound like the kids they are accussing PSU of being.

PSU is usually good on thier sources but like the name implies they are bias towards the PS3 and rarely give bad news. CVG is a very respectable site and magazine, that has been around for alot longer than PSU.com

PS: Here's how the rumor started (most likely):

Part 1: No rockstar GTA trailer at E3 for Sony on the ps3.

Part 2: R*, apologizes. Rockstar then signs a deal about acouple of exclusive games coming soon for the PS3.(games come out in 2008-09)

Part 3: An apology and future exclusive releases? AND THE FORUMS GO WILD with speculation. Eventually the speculation gets out of hand and we have a wide spread rumor.

"R* "bit" the hand that once fed them. Now feeling shame for that action, R* wants to re-establish that commitment to the company that made R* what it is today." <Factual Truth>

Translation in Fanboyism:

OMFG R* is Soneeze Bioc##es! SONY got that arse on the lock down. The ps thripple gonna make sure R* works that corna all nite!

Most rumors are started by underage kids with no grasp between reality and actual economics. If Sony did buy R*, wouldn't they have to give MS their 50mil back? ~$500+million, for one developer? Microsoft would buy R* long before Sony did. Sony would have to pawn in thier own game studios to afford that.

This is almost as good as the whole confusion that Microsoft bought Imersion technologies and was the only ones doing rumble "exclusive".

But then again EA owns a lot of Ubi. Can't wait for EA to make

This only makes the rumor more interesting. Me myself shrug off "X game goes multiplat" and such rumors easily. But the fact that this site enters defensive position this quickly adds some meat on this rumors bone imo.

Well no-one said Sony was buying rockstar. Sony apparently said they wanted to take Rockstar 'under its wings' which could've meant just giving them development help or whatever. Besides, as usual, nothing was confirmed

It is a rumor at this point and that is all. Likely there isn't anything to it and it could be that the exclusive deal for two games was musunderstood in an off the cuff comment.

One thing with which I do not agree is that it would necessarily be bad for Rockstar. Bungie seems to have flourished since MS bought them and they have been limited to a single franchise. The idea Sony ownership would be bad is pure rubbish. If anything it would get them out from under Take2's less than competent management.

Why would company make games for only Sony when Sony only has 2 of the 5 consoles out right now (PSP and PS3 vs Xbox 360, Wii, and DS). It doesn't add up for...anything really. Maybe some exclusive games, but not all future games PS3 exclusive. That would require a lot of money from Sony, because there is just too much money to be made on the other 80% of consoles hooked up to TVs out there right now (Sony has less than 20% market share).

I don't buy anyone going exclusive for Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft without a lot of money doing a lot of talking.

The real problem with this article is evident if you go back and read the PSU article. Don't read the n4g.com header, but read the actual article. The article at PSU is titled "Rumor control. Sony to buy Rockstar?"

At no point in the article do they say or allude to the fact this is hardcore evidence. At no point do they say or even try to utilize euphemisms to plant a seed that will later convince you it's true. They lay out the scene and say 'this was the general talk'. Then at the end of the article is this statement:

"As with any news this interesting, we must affirm that we trust our sources, but that our sources do not constitute an official confirmation. PSU will report back to all of you when we have more."

They are pretty clear this is all rumor, yet CVG seems to have a hard on for busting PSU's. What counter evidence does CVG have other than the fact they don't like the implications of such a deal.

CVG went on to lament how it would be bad for Rockstar. Really? As I said above, where is the CVG article that says "Microsoft purchase of Bungie was a bad idea."

It really is a shame that anyone is defending this so called rumour. this will never happen, ever!

Also, those having a go at the CVG article, it is an opinion piece backed up by solid reasoning from an unbiased objective perspective. Don't believe me then go and check out the site, they post negative and positive articles about all formats.

MS did something very hazardous. Whereas Sony would be smart going with a company with whom they enjoy one of the best 3rd part relationships around.

Rockstar would be partnering with the company that put them on the map. Xbox sales were nothing compared to PS2/PSP sales of Rockstar titles.

Sony also is a believer in Rockstar making multiple franchises rather than sticking to just one.

Specializing with Sony allows Rockstar to make the game they want to make and not be limited by no HDD and only standard DVD.

Be narrowminded. You don't matter. But the 360 is retarding the creative growth of Rockstar in general and the GTA franchise in particular. Fact.

1. Who the hell pays 50 mill for extra content!!(Companies giving out money like that, why would they need to sell shares of thier company when people pay you just to add an extra gun or something to a game)

Microsoft paying 50 mill $$ for extra content for the xbox version of GTA4. Is like payin all the production/shipping/advertisin g costs of GTA4 for ps3 and xbox360. Its like they made the game for free and still have an extra 10+ mill to blow on anything.

I don't think it's true, but how will this hurt Sony like the article states? Sure they are reporting losses, but I really doubt having GTA, Bully, Manhunt, etc. all exclusive to Sony consoles is a bad thing for them. This wouldn't be good or bad for Rockstar either. The only person it would hurt is Take Two. And even if Sony does buy Rockstar, they're probably gonna have to pay Take Two a LOT of money.

Heres why its unlikely

1) This information should be confidential. It would greatly impact stock prices and it would likely hurt Take Two alot.
2) Rockstar/Take Two doesn't want to pass up the revenue to develop on Microsoft systems
3) PS3 is the most expensive platform to develop for and the most difficult platform to develop for. If you throw in the userbase limitations (PS2 was at 20 million+ when GTA 3 came out), Rockstar stands to lose alot here.
4) If the acquisition overtures were real, rumours would exist in more reputable (industry) sources (gamasutra, gamedaily, ign, gamespot, level up, etc).
5) This is a great way to get hits for your website...

6) A Sony published game would appear on Xbox 360 (GTA IV)
7) Rockstar would be limited to the console with the smallest userbase (at the moment) even as it remains in serious financial trouble (especailly since Manhunt and GTAIV both got delayed). I saw a report where Pachter estimated that by the time GTA IV comes out, Take Two's cash reserves would be under 50 million (not good).
8) If Rockstar is sold, the infusion of money would help Take Two short term, but long term? Huge loss of potential profit (unless the sum from buying Rockstar is in the $billions).
9) Microsoft has already paid for downloadable content for GTA IV. The sum was $50 million. With that ground work in place, Take Two probably could have engaged Microsoft and Sony in bidding wars for exclusive content.
