of interesting that even with all the extra support that Blu ray has that HDDVD has almost as many movies out.

PS3 is improving Blu ray sales but not to a significant extent. There are almost 4,000,000 PS3s out there. Blu ray should be crushing HDDVD. There shouldn't be a 60/40 split.

I read in an article that less than 13% of console purchasers watch movies on them.

The Blu-ray group is outspending the HD DVD group 10 to 1 and all they can manage is a 62% market share? This is a huge victory for HD DVD! And here come cheaper HD DVD players…

62% is still a big number. 38% for HD-DVD who also had a head start in this format war. That 38% will soon be diminishing after some big name titles come this fall and holiday season from exclusive Blu-ray backers. I can already think of Spiderman trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and the Matrix trilogy.

EDIT: Matrix trilogy is by Warner Bros and Warner does both formats.

PS3 is a new console so obviously it's going to have less sales. Hell, even the Wii selling as much as possible has less sales than 360 as of this month. HD-DVD is the older and Blu-ray already passed HD-DVD both in players and in software, so Blu-ray won. You have to be stupid to think HD-DVD is coming back. The format war isn't a football game where a team can come back. Once the new format passes it's over. Get over it!

I hope they both die off and we just stick with DVD's. There's really no point to HD-DVD or BR if you can stream what you want to watch and when you want. I still like stuff but I would rather not have to pay for the extra cost of a disc when I can pay soley for the content.

8 - HD DVD is the way

Many people set back saying blue ray this blue ray that. All I can say is that my HD DVD player upscales all my normal dvd's and my blue ray player doesn't. Not to mention the sound quality out of it is hands down in favor of the HD DVD. The only reason blue ray is winning currently is because of the ps3. If the ps3 wasn't out the amount of stand alone players is 3 to 1 in HD DVD's favor again. Just wait, when the HD DVD players are about a hundred dollars, every red necked person that shops at wal mart will be going Yeeeeee Heeeee look at that Bessy i could of been hadden a HD DVD player. That will spread across the country like wild fire. And you will see that the HD DVD player wins. (this country is about 85 percent red neck)

My blu-ray player upscales my DVD's. It's called the PS3.

Sony has made sure that even if Toshiba beats them to the lowest favorable price mark to consumers, then the format war STILL will not be over due to the PS3. The PS3 isn't going anywhere for a long time, and it alone will drag blu-ray through the fight as it has already done so.

Blu-Ray isn't going anywhere, and has most major motion picture companies backing it through the fight. This is the equivalent of having most major video game publishers releasing games for a console exclusively. This alone has an even larger impact.

Lastly, what was the last exclusive deal you heard going in the direction of HD-DVD?

Not bashing. Just being realistic. I'm sure HD-DVD is great, but don't we all just want to stop reading these damn articles about which one is better? It will only happen when one gives up, and from my standpoint, I hope it's HD-DVD.

You have not experienced blu-ray has to offer, my ps3 offers upconverted dvd's just fine, I have a 300 dollar unconverting dvd player when is ~1 year old so It is still a pretty good player..... and I can say the upconversion looks almost identical.

As for sound your wrong' ive see many of my blu-rays with uncompressed pcm sound and it DOES sound better than dts hd and dolby true-hd. I have the sound 3 thousand dollar sound system that can back them up

And the way you make it sound like a ps3 is not part of the market is rediculous It is part of the market to SEll the media, and these stats just prove it. Yes ps3 is not a stand alone player but it in the end is still a blu-ray capable player and guess what it is increase the market share of the media sold

your reasoning is flawed. its like the pda market. There are dedicated units, but you cant tell me pda phones dont make up a large portion of the market also??

In 2006, HD-DVD has 62.87% market share, while Blu-ray has 37.13%.
In 2007, HD-DVD has 38.22% market share, while Blu-ray has 61.78%.

In just one year, we have a complete reversal between HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

If Blu-ray was not dead or losing in 2006 with 37.13% market share,
then HD-DVD is not dead or losing in 2007 with 38.22% market share.

And we can have another complete reverse, again, in 2008.

You see the funny thing is HD DVD launched first before Blu ray, and sony had that problem with I think Panasonic Blu ray players with the bad chips, which then people said Blu rays quality of video was bad, but once sony got all that fixed, sales turned around big time, so Blu ray had a bumpy road in 2006, and now they are ready for this year and I believe well into the year after.

28% of US homes have HDTV whats the advantage of HD movies to the rest? I am willing to bet out of 28% only like 5% are interested in an HD movie players. Until a player is sold under $200 there will be no clear winner. Only ps3 owners that have no games to play are tipping the scales a little bit. the consumer will decide not a bunch of fanboy ps3 owners.

I agree DVD was great everyone had standard defintion televisions and could see a benefit. Also DVD elimanted rewinding and tapes getting eaten.

I too have a ps3, and no it doesn't. The only way it upscales is if you have a 1080p tv and an HDMI cable. Thats great, spend 3,000 dollars on a tv and i get to see 1080p, I dont think so. See HD DVD players upscale it to 720p if you have a 720p tv, the blue ray doesn't. And it's still hih def. And looks pretty damn good too.

Wow I didn't know there's such a thing as HD-DVD fanboys. Guess I'm wrong. And You really don't own a PS3 because you would know that it upscales up to 1080i and 720p via Component cables.

Secondly, you speak of HD-DVD players. Why not fight fire with fire and compare it to the XBOX360 as a HD-DVD player? Well let's look at this, in order for someone to play a HD-DVD movie in 1080p, you would need to use a VGA cable that goes for $40. Plus, you would need a TV that has a VGA input that is outputting in native 1080p. And you like to talk price. Let's talk price. XBOX360 deluxe is $399. Plus $179 for the HD-DVD add-on. Plus the $40 VGA Cable. So you're looking at $620.

As for the $300 HD-DVD standalone players, that's great and all. But if it was really "cheap" that would be the war winning strategy, then why is the market share still 30% HD-DVD and 60% Blu-Ray at this point?

Another factor is studio support. The only things you cant get on Blu-Ray is Universal Movies. But on HD-DVD you cant get any Disney Movies etc. Imagine the family man who steps into the world of High Defition movies and buys an HD-DVD player. Goes out to look for Chicken Little or Cars for his young boy or girl. Whoops, S.O.L. Buddy. Buy them Fast and Furious Tokyo drift? Same thing right?

While HD-DVD is holding up a nice fight, it's already dated technology. What do I mean by that? Well you look in the computer world. Pay $10 for a 5 pack of 25gb blu-ray discs, or pay $10 for a 5 pack 15gb HD-DVD discs? No brainer. Get the one with more space.

I must be living in some imaginary land because my son and daughter are watching a Blues Clues DVD right now in 1080p on my PS3. I can guarantee you this is not a HD disc. My TV shows the resolution setting when I switch between inputs and right now while this DVD is playing it shows 1080p. Someone must have thrown fairy dust in my eyes because in your reality I am just making this up.

I also must be imagining the DVD Upscaler option under the System Settings/DVD/BD Settings option too. Wow, what a magical world I live in.

You sir are either insane or blind. Either way, you should just return your PS3 to someone who can actually watch it, or comprehend how to use it. Also, please do not contradict yourself by saying the PS3 cannot upscale and then give an example how of how it can right after.

Dude look at what you said. You said that blue ray was be impacted by the ps3 rite. Well your rite, just about all of the sales (for the most part) have been because of the ps3. Now have you failed to realize that the 500 dollar price tag is still atached to the ps3. Hell, it just dropped to 500 dollars. Thats alot of money man, atleast it is to me. There is place for three consoles. There is space for 5 Operating Systems. There is room for only one format. CD -> DVD -> BD.

HD-DVD will only be available as long as Toshiba hang on to it. They should have unified with the BD format. They are getting dropped at retail and rentals. Not even MS last push with add-on for XB360 will change it. Let it go.

And for those saying that PS3 owners don't watch HD video on their machines - why not ask them? One of the reasons I got the PS3 is for watching movies in HD. I am not about to buy a standalone player if it all is in one nice package.

The only negative impact the PS3 has on BD sales is because it plays DVD's so well. Heck - the upscaling makes it look nearly HD. So I am not about to replace my DVD titles with BD just for a little bit on and improvement. But new titles - yeah.

I for one do not use my 360 or PS3 to play movies (I hve watched a total of 3 on each). I know it is doubling up to buy a stand alone player, but money is not a concern. I look at it this way dvd players, HD DVD players, and blu-ray players will ony have a certain lif cycle. If you gaes on your PS3 or 360 and watch movies you are probaly shortening the player's life cycle by half. If you occasionally wacth and play then there is not reson for concern, but for hardcore gamers and movie watchers this could put a toll on your next-gen system. I leave my onsole strictly for gaming, but I am not knocking tose of you who do other wise. This is just my $.02 .

21 - Blueray will not be the next Beta nor will it be UMD...

The difference between now and then was that Sony was the only one to make betamax players and media. The same can be said about the UMD format as Sony was the only ones to make that as well. This time around, Sony got smart and licensed their technology to anyone who wanted to use it. Much the same as JVC did in the VHS/Beta war and we all know who won that one.

HDDVD does have some better features but it lacks in licensed players like Sony. So this is the same format war all over again. You have to know that Beta was better than VHS but it lacked licensed partners. HDDVD is better than blueray but it too lacks licensed partners. I would like to really see the licensing of the "PS3" technology go to other manufacturers as well.

3DO did this with Sanyo and Goldstar. The fact that there was not one but 3 different 3DO models on the market gave consumers the option of whether to purchase the Panasonic, Sanyo or Goldstar units and each had the same basic principals but they also had something unique to themselves. I know the 3DO didnt do to well but it did allow consumers a choice of which one to get.

If sony were to license the ability to play PS3 games on other blueray players it could be beneficial to the consumers. Sony has a name value associated with the PS3 but why can't Samsung or Pioneer or Hitachi make PS3 compatible players? Each one of those companies may not have the same clout as Sony when it comes to being synonimous with the Playstation name but I bet they could sell them at less cost than Sony. It would do nothing but help the adoption of the PS3 gaming format.

Sony would make more money from licensed technology than being the only provider. Sony made the walkman but they were not the only ones to have one. They may have had the name but soon after there were other brands that did the same thing. Apple made the IPOD but they were not the only ones to have one. Soon after there were other brands that offered a similar experience.

The point is the format is the same so why not be allowed to play it on any compatible player. The Sanyo 40gb PS3 compatible blueray player or the JVC 160 DVR/PS3 compatible player or Hitachi 200gb DVR/DVD recorder PS3 compatible blueray player. The possiblities could be endless.

26 - this format war is nowhere near ending.

ironwolf pointed out one point that most are totally disregarding. the average american consumer buys their consumer electronics based on price. blueray will be around the same way umd is still around, but ultimately hd-dvd will claim the crown. this is just my opinion, but here are some things to think about;

1. by the time the enty-level price points for hdtvs' hit the mass-market level, hd-dvd players will probably be about $149 while blueray players will probably be $250 at the very least. with gas prices always on the rise along with everything else, it's quite illogical to believe the average consumer would pay a premium price for a high-def format when they don't have to.

2. the ps3 as a blueray player will only effect a small segment of high -def players. more people watch movies than play games. that's a fact. the ps3 will appeal to those who wish to do both, but on the whole, it's the stand alone players that will sell the most. deny it if you wish, but look at the ps2 versus stand alone dvd players.

3. studio support and standardization of the format are two issue that in my opinion, could come back to bite sony in the rear end. why? of the blueray players currently on the market and already in homes, only the ps3 will not be obsolete when blueray profile 1.1 is made the standard. that could potentially create some consumer backlash when john and jane doe find out that expensive player they bought won't allow them to view all the special features that everyone has been touting so much. as for studio support, some like myself might feel like supporting blueray is no different than just handing over my money and control of visual media to the mpaa because its the industry in charge of the format, not the manufacturers.

regardless some will disagree, but like i said before blueray will still be around because sony also uses it for its game format. ultimately though, hd-dvd will be the predominate high-def format for movies due to its low cost to both consumers and studios.
