Console wars 2007: The numbers so far

Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony - Titans of the videogame industry and sworn enemies on the console battlefield. But which of gaming's Big Three is winning the war in 2007 so far? Well, using the monthly US hardware sales figures released by market researchers NPD Group, we've tallied up the past six months worth of numbers (Jan-June) to find out how consoles and handhelds have fared in the States during the first half of 2007. Here are the results:

Total US hardware sales January-June 2007
DS: 2.7 million
Wii: 2.1million
Xbox 360: 1.3 million
PSP: 1.3 million
PS3: 763k

is owning in every country including the USA. Both hardware and software wise.

360 sales seem to be steady but slow compared to last year.

PS3 sales are slow in US.

These numbers are of no suprise bc of the known monthly sales. These numbers will all increase bc of the Holiday season coming soon.

Actually if you read Gamasutras full paper on the first half of 2007, the Wii has been dropping in sales since march, while the PS3 and 360 are seeing slow steady rises and falls.

Also the DS is killing everything without signs of stopping and the PsP is starting to rise.

Wow the ds sold more than the 360 and psp combined! I wish they did jan - july it would have helped the ps3 numbers quite a bit; it has sold a ton since the price drop.

Interesting that 2 of the top ten titles are PS2 yet apparently, according to this article, not a single PS2 has been sold in the US in the last 7 months! Hey Games Radar - the PS2 is selling far too well to be omitted from this sort of list. Didn't the software sales clue you in?

Hmmm I do see Wii games on there but, I still dont think the overall software sales goes to Wii (bloodmask). It just doesnt make any sense to me. I think the 360 wins in overall software sold. Otherwise how can they claim nearly 60% of the market share when the Wii is clearly way a head of the other consoles (in hardware sales).

And how could they not sell any PS2's thats weird?
Or maybe they just didnt add it (I think they didnt).

Edit: 9.1 below me I know I read the list I'm not blind I merely think that it doesnt make any sense. And besides that top 10 still doesnt mean that the Wii sold more software overall.

Also think how can 360 get 60 percent of the market share if the Wii is selling nearly a million more consoles??? Doesnt that mean 360 is selling alot of software??

How is the 360 selling more when it only has 2 titles on this top ten of the year? Granted that there are more then 10 games in the world but it is clear that the big sellers seem to go with Wii/DS or PS2.

@ Eagle Eye - Yes, the xbox 360's software sales are higher than even the Wii's. But, obviously not in hardware sales.

@ PS360WII - You answered your own question : "Granted that there are more then 10 games in the world...." Think of it this way, probably 90% (or higher) of ppl that purchased the Wii bought Zelda. Do you think even 50% of Xbox360 owners (with half the Wii's install base) bought Crackdown ? Probably not.

@ Odion - You are correct sir: "....the Wii has been dropping in sales since march"

Another thing to consider is within this time period, January-June 2007, there weren't too many major releases for Xbox360 & PS3. However, this will change over the course of the next 5 months for both the PS3 & the 360. Fiscal 2007 numbers at the end of the year will be MUCH more interesting.

I hope the Wii fad will continue to dwindle it's clear dominance, but cheap games on cheap systems will always sell. Thus, they will always be at the top of industry numbers.

No I didn't answer my own question for the majority of game sales goes to Wii/DS or PS2. 360 gets a good amount too but it seems it's not the top seller of software.

How much has the Wii be dropping? Maybe a thousand every other month? It's still selling way more than the others and seeing that Mario is coming out seems to me that it'll only get higher is sales yet again.

Unless that website gives us a larger list of game sales then I'm going to assume that the 360 isn't selling as much games as the other systems.

Plus anyone can claim market share anyway they want just by a nice little spin of numbers. If you look at hardware then Nintendo owns 59% of 2007 sales while 360 gets 16% see that easy

First off Blackjack 7 I know the Wii is clearly the winner of the consoles in hardware sales. Second to PS360WII you cant base overall software sold by looking at a top 10 list. I am only saying that of the 3 new consoles 360 is selling more software. I'm just looking at it based on E3 market charts. It just doesn't make sense for the Wii to be both hardware and software leader, yet somehow 360 claims nearly 60 percent of the market share. Thats all I'm saying I'm not taking anyone side but does that make any sense too you?

Edit: But PS360WII I will respect you opinion on the matter I just happen to disagree.

Eagle Eye. Yea sorry for that kind of got side tracked. Does seem odd what with the 360 having the highest attach rate and yea I can't go off of a list of 10.

Sorry DubC, I'm not a Wii hater. My nephew has one & it's fun. It is what it is though, & I would much rather support a HD console. Put to you this way: If the PS3 & the Xbox360 BOTH were to fail, while the Wii continued to kick ass, then HD gaming & Games like GEARS OF WAR or MGS4 or KILLZONE 2 would not exist. Do you have a Wii ? Does playing Wii sports or even Zelda fulfill all your gaming desires ?

I think you're buying into the FUD that the Wii's success would bring about the demise of "hardcore" games. Those types of games will always be around as long as there is a demand and audience for them.

I personally do not game for hours every day so WiiSports, Big Brain Academy, Monkey Ball, Zelda, Rayman, and RE4 exceed my gaming needs at the moment. I really don't see what MGS4 and KZ2 would offer me over their predecessors aside from graphics. I try not to buy into hype so I will reserve judgment until those games are released to decide whether they are worthwhile or not but they definitely do *look* impressive.

I personally think that killzone 2 has tons of room to grow. The first one had some AI issues and as such i think that killzone 2 will have a lot more to offer than killzone 1. MGS will be more of the same but that isnt a bad thing. MGS is also a story line that many of us have a vested interest in and so we want to see it to the end.

Dub you also named zelda (TP was amazing and i am not knocking it) in your list which hasnt offered anything new in years. It is a hardcore game for hardcore gamers just like mgs and killzone are. If its not broke why fix it?

You are right, if a game series' formula is successful, there's little reason to change it. I personally have played MGS and KZ before, but the last Zelda game I played was A Link to the Past (shocking and absolutely unacceptable, I know). I never owned an N64 or a Gamecube, and RPGs aren't really the type of games to play at a friend's house when multiplayer gems like Perfect Dark provided fun for everyone. So even though TP is another Zelda game, it is VASTLY different from A Link to the Past.

11 - Difference Between Handheld and Console

Honestly, I don't care if the DS is selling better than the 360 or the PS3.

It's a handheld system. It's much cheaper and it serves a different purpose (to shut kids up when travelling). Of course it's going to have higher sales!
