Square Enix Have Destroyed Final Fantasy Tradition

Final Fantasy Union: "Today is a day of mixed emotions. Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIII would be seeing its Western release on the 9th of March, 2010 (good news), but they also announced that pop sensation Leona Lewis would be lending her song 'My Hands' to the Western version as its theme song (bad news).

Why is this bad news? Well, it's the first time in the franchise's history that Western gamers won't be able to hear any music composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu. He was only hired by Square Enix to do the theme tune for Final Fantasy XIII and the Japanese theme, called Kimi Ga Iru Kara, is unlikely to be present in the Western version. "

Masashi Hamauzu composed FFX (and not XII)

Masashi Hamauzu is composing XIII.

I don't see an issue.

I see this article failed to mention how it was actually Hamauzu and not Uematsu who composed X like it is with XIII.

Wow, lose the charm and lose the audience.

This is a very bad move. The Song is generally ok, it's just the sentimental thing about the tradition is missing y'know?

Here's the song

No, Masashi Hamauzu co-composed Final Fantasy X alongside Nobuo Uematsu and Junya Nakano. They did about 1/3 each. All those memorable songs, Suteki da Ne, To Zanarkand, Seymour Battle, Sight of Spira, Hymn of the Fayth, they were all composed by Uematsu.

Nobuo Uematsu has been involved with every single main Final Fantasy (excluding Final Fantasy X-2 if that's countable) and he will be involved with the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII, just not the Western version.

The issue is that many fans would probably rather see an English version of Nobuo Uematsu's Main Theme, which was written specificially for the game, as opposed to Leona Lewis' track, which was written for herself and isn't in any way associated with Final Fantasy.

Yeah the song for the us release should have been made about the game's story. Not just some random pick.

It's a horrible idea to do what hey did. My only hope is they get so much backlash from the fans that they change it back to the Japanese theme before the games release and maybe only use the other pile of crap at the end of the credits or something. I mean from looking around on N4G and various other gaming forums it seems around 90% of the people are totally against this English theme song.

I listen to it for a min and immediately know that this is yet another one of the many mistakes SE made to 'cater' to the West. That song has phucking nothing to do with FF, and is a total misfit....i might have to import the jap version this december

1.12 - You know what.....Tell Square to keep their game...I'm not buying it.
Look,
The reason that most of us want to play JRPG's is because we not only like the game, but we like what the Japs. give us. We like the artistry, we like the soul and spirit that said artist gives us, almost an inside look into the heart of Japan's artists.
We want that, and I know they (Square) has heard our pleas. But are they listening? Obviously not. They insist on giving us what THEY want to give us instead of what we've asked for and there's various ways that they could deliver what we want. They want to give us what THEY feel Americans can digest....MCDONALDS-MTV-POP. As a gamer, I'm pretty offended. It wouldn't take but a button press to get us both versions on that BluRay and even a Download on the the inferior DVD9, since we know little brother XBOX 360 just HAS to tag along.

We are supposed to be moving forward in this gaming generation and artistically, Square insists on holding it back.
Well, guess what...I'm not gonna buy this bullsh87 and if you guys are as passionate about this as I am and Square to take us seriously, you will do the same. Quit treating us any kind of old way just because you watch the news and think you know what's best for us. What's best for us is to kindly give us what we've asked as your fans and what were accustomed to.

I don't know if you feel the same...but that's my take.

S-E really screwed this up. Final Fantasy music is a bastion of excellence in this industry, and now that S-E is whoring the series out for more sales is nothing short of disgusting, but to be honest, it doesn't really surprise me. I've been saying the same thing for a long time: "SquareSoft was a developer. Square-Enix is a corporation."

The only thing they care about is money. If whoring the very series that SquareSoft lovingly created back on the NES will make them more money, then that's what they're going to do. It's a sad day when we can't hear the beautiful tunes created by Uematsu-san. It won't stop me from getting the game, but I'll be pressing Start before that song comes up, that I can promise you.

You hit the nail on the head for me. I've been playing Japanese RPGs for over 15 years now. I don't want the soul of those games removed to make games more "American". That ruins the heart of JRPGs.

The only track I heard in FF10 that even deserves to be MENTIONED in the same sentence as Nobuo Uematsu is the main theme To Zanarkand. Oh, hold on, wait a minute... TO ZANARKAND WAS COMPOSED BY NOBUO UEMATSU. Other than that, most other pieces are mediocre at best. ALL of Uematsu's work completely DESTROYS anything Hamauzu could even DREAM of composing. That man has a gift. You can give him MIDI and he can make it sound like a full fledged orchestra. Hamauzu still needs more practice if he actually intends to fill Uematsus shoes...properly...

Hell, I think Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger fame might be better suited for the position if you ask ME. But... It is what it is...

This is actually the 1st time I've heard of this song, bec. I don't listen to this kind of music. What can I say? Besides being piss-poor it doesn't fit.

I actually don't mind them hiring International Artists to do songs for FF, but good god, compose a song that perfectly suits the game, not pluck 1 from the Top 100 charts.

No, that is incorrect, you act as if Square made it a tradition to release Final Fantasy games on Japanese made consoles only, no, they release them on popular consoles and Xbox 360 being the first American console to be extremely popular, why would Square pass up that fanbase?

you guys are making a big fuss for not that much. the song will surely be about 3 minutes in a 40-50 hour game, just like suteki da ne was for ffX and eyes on me(which was in english already) for FFVIII. OK, I would have preferred th jap version, but a 3 min song won't ruin the game.

This my friends, is tagged back to Microsoft. Had they not wanted to steal FF from Playstation so bad, Square now feels the need to Westernize the game and are doing a great job at it. Sadly. Since the average 360 owner is an FPS junky and is NOT into the Japanese culture,

All the people that I've met that only have an xbox 360, have no interest in JRPGS, they're only interested in WRPGs. The same doesn't hold true with my ps3 friends with most actually like the FF games. The sales will show just how much the 360 fans want this game, but it might sell a million on hype/marketing alone. Barely enough to cover costs, good thing MS covered 360 development costs. Think that's implausible ... why not? they did with FF11, that's a fact.

8 - "The music of Final Fantasy is a big deal and it's easily one of the things that put video game music on the map. The fans are very passionate about it, and this move is just another faux pas by Square Enix. It shows that they perhaps undervalued the opinion of their fans because for many, it will seriously devalue the game. The only redeeming thing is that Nobuo Uematsu will at least be composing the score to Final Fantasy XIV, but it's not quite the same."
I call BS. I think that the real reason why anyone's complaining is so that there will be one more negative thing to pin on SE and Microsoft. How much of a deal is the song? It's a game. Play the game for the story, the characters, the mechanics, the immersion. One effing song on the track that doesn't sit well with you does not merit an article on the net that says, "All Final Fantasy fans think this is a disservice." You cannot just say that. It's not up to you to make your opinion the opinion of the general people.

Most FF fans who would probably buy the japanese version much less than this version if the song is downright messy. Also people may do that because we all know when it comes to english voice acting for japanese games have been terrible. So hopefully the bluray version will include both voices.

100% Wrong

Don't ever use the word immersion, if you state people should get into the many facets of a beloved franchise. When people start up SFIV, and realise how terrible the intro song was, that does detract from peoples experience. I am one who loves all aspects of games, but I hate this TLR crap and I will enjoy the hell out of this game though.

Edit

I do agree 100% that this article is worthless for grabbing hate comments, and doesn't change the fact that we're on the outside looking in.

Do you go see a movie because just the plot alone is good or do you go see a movie for more than a plot such as the music, the acting, etc?

I can safely say the FF music is good enough that they hold big concert for them. They had one in Chicago last year. So for you to think the music is not important to a FF game, you are sadly mistaken.

exactly MUSIC in FF games is a big deal not counting the " black mages " discs ( currently three .. i can count at least 18 releases of compil of music of final fantasy games ... and they sold ... a lot ... concert are organised ...

If music is just "music" they my friend you've missed some great track

" opera -FF6 "
" One winged angel - FF7 "
" Battle for the bridge - FF5 "
" matoya's cave - FF1 "
" The skies above - FF10 "
....

well the list goes on ( i have many more favorites ) ... so i can safely say ...that a good music in a rpg help to the ambiance .. to place the setting of the story ( ar tonelico, xeno saga proved that very well ).

The main theme of FF is a big deal else why would SE itself make a big annoncement of this partnership ??? ... because many people care about it ...

Its a horrible decision that will have ZERO impact on sales. Who the hell buys games based on the singer in it? lol. Most fans just want the original Final Fantasy experience.
