Perfect Dark 2 canceled, may have evolved into something else

As the footage from a former Rare employee shows work on Perfect Dark 2 was done in 2007 before being scrapped as well as Kameo 2. Additionally, MundoRare has some exclusive information to share regarding Perfect Dark 2. According to our own sources, PD2 was indeed started in 2007, but by late 2007, it wasn't greenlighted; it was a prototype instead. Chris Seavor from Conker and Killer Instinct fame was in charge of the project. By early 2008, the PD2 team was cut down to a 3-man team, effectively putting the game on hold. At the same time, our sources revealed that back then, it was "overwhelmingly unlikely" that PD2 would no longer be set in the PD universe. During early 2008, the game (which evolved into something that wasn't PD2) was still in its early stages and with an uncertain future.

Kind of a coincidence how since Rare were bought by MS they have completely fallen from grace.

Rare on N64 = gods

Rare on 360 = games comparable to barbie horse adventures.

1.3 - Sigh....RARE of the 90's, I miss thee.
Start making awesome games again.....please?

:'(

They managed to screw up Banjo-Kazooie, though, so I don't really have high hopes for RARE. And the guy above me is right.

Honestly Microsoft acquiring Rare should of been the equivalent of Sony acquiring Naughty dog. Just goes to show what happens when business takes control of creativity.

Yeah everyone just blame Microsoft for what Rare has become...nevermind the fact that key members of the GoldenEye team left after beginning work on Perfect Dark.

Nevermind the fact that another small number of employees left to form Eighth Wonder.

So no, it doesn't show what happens when business takes control of creativity; it shows what happens when a company filled with key creative people leave that company.

One of their best, Banjo-Tooie, came out a year after this ''devastating'' split.

2 - a lack of studios can do this
before you say 'ehhh bu sony cancelled x y and z' remember that those cancellations didn't stop a constant flow or MORE constant flow of games. Never played kameo but i heard it has a large following so its a pity for those guys i suppose as im sure those guys would just prefer a straight sequel instead of a natal version/spinoff..who knows

Indeed. GE007 and PD are probably THE greatest console FPS of all time. I haven't had nearly as much fun with a console FPS since. Good times!

I really hope you aren't referring to Perfect Dark Zero... that game was like bathing in feces horrible. N64 Perfect Dark was insanely awesome for its time though. Rare is just worthless post-N64 days imo.

9 - rare died with the gamecube.
Star-fox adventures
the only gamecube game that they made

If anything, after being purchased by MS they've begun to increase in quality again, and make more games.

9.1 - Honestly, I'd rather nintendo have no exclusives hindered by their crappy tech.
I don't think anyone here has been really following Rare, or read beyond your title... Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Conker Live & Reloaded, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Jetpack Refueled, Viva Pinata and Banjo Kazooie all having entirely different and unique gameplay. Tell me your other favorite devs can do that in any given console cycle. ALL LIES!!!

This sucks if it was a sequel to Perfect Dark. I could see canceling a sequel to Perfect Dark Zero but a real Perfect Dark 2. I loved Perfect Dark on the N64 and look forward to the Xbox Live Arcade version. So the rumor was true after all from Game Guru.

I so hope MS will rethink this and bring out PD2. Rare is a great developer and I would have loved to have seen what they could have done with PD2. There was some great online play for PDZ and I would have liked to have seen them in PD2. Like I said I hope MS will revive PD2. As great of an IP as Halo is MS needs more IPs other then just Halo. The PD series would have been another great IP MS could have used. So it sucks when you hear this news.

Rare I think has turned into Microsofts little whipping boy. Seems that every time Microsoft goes off on some tangent it's up to Rare to fill in the blank.

They need a launch FPS for their new console, enter Perfect Dark Zero.

They need more casual friendly games on their system. Enter Viva Piniata, Banjo Kazooie etc.

Now they need some in house launch titles for Natal, Rare to the rescue again.

When will Microsoft let Rare finally be able to breath? Alow them time and funds to make something that reflects the gems they gave us back in the 90's. Perfect Dark 2 might have been a good start. It would be better for Rare as a whole if Microsoft just had more in house developers to take some of the pressure off them.

it happened before that stuff got cancelled and it envovled in something else,it happened to viva pinata which was a project called my garden, the vehicle concept was supposed to be in banjo tooie etc. ,and rare isnt sh!tty they are still full of creative heads that make innovative gems like bano NB.

Rare never really cared about their fanbase, they just make what the f!ck they want.

17 - This blows
Although Perfect Dark Zero was flawed, mainly rushed it had potential and I was really looking forward to a sequel. The original HD remix for Xbox live arcade will be better then the majority of the shooters on the platform I am certain. That game is pure gold.

Another IP ruined? I can't help but think of Halo, the first two were amazing and Halo Wars was refreshing. I guess it bugs me that Halo 2 was a superior game running on a 733mhz Xbox from 2001, they never went next gen and the stories became a complete farce. I actually think the graphics have gotten worse with each title.

I remember when I first read about the Xbox360 and I saw the screenshots of Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. The quality of the visuals and design ethic of Rare was clear to see. Furthermore, Microsoft had improved their own design ethic of the Xbox brand.
I'd say that Rare do have one foot in the past, one in the future (and one in the present!). I understand why they chose to make vehicle creation the centrepiece of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and bolts however it's be great to see a really epic platforming Banjo Kazooie sequel from them. They remain system sellers to me because of their difference from other developers.
