Valve has teams 'working on other stuff'
30
Videogamer writes: "Left 4 Dead 2 has gone gold and will be in stores and available via Steam from November 20, but beyond supporting that title, what lies ahead for Valve? More Left 4 Dead? A Portal sequel? What of Half-Life 2: Episode 3?
We recently caught up with Valve writer Chet Faliszek and quizzed him on all the above."

Hmmmm. "Working on other stuff" can only mean one of three things when it comes to Valve these days:
1) finding free community mods, re-skinning them, and selling them as full retail games
2) taking one of their older games, doing minor touch-ups on the graphics, and slapping a "2" or "Episode X" on the end of it
3) thinking of new ways to slam the PS3 platform, though they haven't once developed a game for it
I speak the truth.

In the amount of time they've been supposedly working on episode 3, how many full games with complete, fleshed out plots have other devs made?
Never mind that when it does come out, it not really going to be much of an improvement gameplay or graphics wise.

3.2 - Yes, "They're a small team."
That happens to manage a very popular, and hopefully very profitable, download. Yet they not only take years to put out a game, but when they come out they tend to be bug riddled.
Edit: BTW:
"They're a small team."
"There is a small team."
"Their one of EA's small teams."
As much as I hate people making this mistake, I make it as well :p

3.4 - @ Godmars 290
Let me ask you this.
How many games rock a 96 on Metacritic?
How many games have the full support from community? That's mods, forums, clans, socializing.
How many games in a series has been all AAA?
How many franchises have a f*cking gravity gun?

Its either "They're making a lot cash off Steam," or "They are making a lot cash off Steam." And I say "hopefully" because you never really know if they're making money off it or just breaking even. If they are making tons off of it, they certainly have space to ignore and insult a platform that they could have made a few million off of.
As for them being anything on the 360 I still hold, have nothing that convinces me otherwise, that Valve are PC snobs at best. That if MS hadn't made the 360's dev tools PC friendly you probably wouldn't have seen it on the system.
That they have to patch a demo twice with one literally atop the other, especially when we're talking about a ten year old game engine, smacks of something other than snobery much less talent to me.
@toaster:
What does any of that have to do with anything? Especially a supportive community who's only going to defend something they obviously like.
Yes, people like Valve games. That doesn't excuse Valve from taking years to make added content or patching demos hours after they're released.

3.6 - Of course they are making bucketloads of money from Steam.
They made Steam the superior distribution service.
And IMO I think Valve should NEVER have developed for 360. They're wasting they're time. I own a 360 btw. When I play Orange Box on 360 it makes me want to cry in shame at how they mutilated the game.

3.8 - "Every game has bugs."
Missing the point.
Its not like bugs aren't common, its that it seems they're more common with Valve. That because Valve has Steam to lean on, they use it to excess. That instead of taking the time to make something that should be forgettable - by the programmers - as a demo is done right the first time, its sent out in such a state that it has to be fixed otherwise it could make them look bad. With the only reason they aren't looking bad by patching it is that "bugs are common."
Its like they're playing off the same mentality that has people thanking MS for 3 year warrenties instead of making a 360 right the first time.

I'ce been off good terms with Valve for a while now. To be honest it was the last straw for me when they sold me the 360 version of L4D. I wanted to play with a few non PC gaming mates and loved a little L4D on the PC previously. Now I didn't expect parity but neither did I expect the overprived, underpowered mess I payed for. Nothing that makes the PC version good is present in the 360 game-lesss support from Valve, no community support, no mods. And it cost me over twice what I payed on Steam to add insult to injury.
That's why I had to laugh when Gabe apologised for the OB port on PS3 that they didn't even do! They SHOULG have been saying sorry about THAT pile of crap they ARE responsible(directly) for.
360 only gamers sometimes act like it's one of the 360's crown jewels when, in fact, it's plainly embarrassing and they shoul moan like mad at both Valve and MS for the sorry state of affairs. The only thing more ludicrous is PS3 owners jealous of it! If they only knew! Played on PC it's a great .little game but on 360 it's beyong insulting. Worst gaming experience this gen was being so let down by this.
As for bugs, we get more and more from most devs as they realise what a crappy, soulless community we are-more interested in rubbishing each other than demanding the quality we deserve. Just look at IW this week to see what I mean. They're hardly being punished for dragging MP gaming backwards are they? Never mind just PC gamers we should have ALL demended them and not bought til they caved in. If one treats us crappy and gets away with it most of them will!

On PC, patching is a bit different than console devs do it. Instead of waiting a month or two and releasing a big patch, PC devs release small updates regulary so we don't have to wait. Only takes about 5 seconds to download and install through Steam. The Left4Dead 2 patches for the demo were pretty small.

5.1 - Umm..
You're joking right?
CS2 would never come consoles. If you think hard enough you can figure out why.
EDIT: @ Below
The reason why the XBox Version was never popular because it sucked. A game like CS needs the community for maps, mods, skins, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
I think there are only about 20 official maps for CSS.
When you look for a game you'll see about 100+ different maps. Each map has specific rules, gametypes, restrictions, whathaveyou.
That would never be possible on consoles.

They should have just held off on the episodes and made it into a third game. The graphical disparities between the three (assumption on the 3rd)will make it somewhat difficult to believe you're playing through a connected timeline.

Well, there's Episode Three and Portal 2.
There's also a game being developed by the developers of the first Left 4 Dead (few developers from the first L4D worked on L4D2) which may or may not be codenamed "Whiskey Sour."
A Counter-Strike 2 will have to come eventually, but probably not in this decade.
