Game Journalism: Just for the Fanboys?

News 4 Gamers, one of the largest gaming websites, has become a staple in gaming journalism. News is shared and commented on by thousands, which should seem like a dream for the gaming community and writers. However, websites like these appear to have done more of the opposite

Looking back at all the articles from the previous weeks on N4G, you can see a clear pattern. Funny, how the console comparisons and controversial statements get the most hits. Compare the PS3 and 360 and you are guaranteed over 500 views within hours.

You may say that this is obvious, and controversy always gets this treatment. It isnt the controversy that is the problem: It is the fact that the articles are made specifically as flame-bait for fanboys.

This article is in no way intended to damage N4G's reputation, yet it is one of the most evident places to see this console-war waging. Take a look at the comments, or if you have a flame-suit and extinguisher nearby, the open section. 4/5 comments bash a certain game or console, with the odd one out actually being relevant.

Most of it is. A lot of articles the come on are based purely on the console war. They like poking a bee nest and it works. As long as they keep getting hits from these articles we'll never have proper game journalism. Hell, even large websites bicker amongst themselves.

1.6 - I have nothing against the articles, but I do take issue with how the comments are policed.

Controversy gets hits fans of video games are passionate about their hobby. I don't know sites that like to stir things up. What I do take issue with is the sites that do so without a shred of truth, with complete disregard for the facts. Destructoid comes to mind as a site that can post the most outlandish fallacies under the guise of "opinion" and get away with it.

However, the comments section is a mess. The idea of a Gamer Zone as opposed to an Open Zone isn't a bad notion, but it needs to be enforced. I've had another member of the community stalk my posts, harass me, send me intimidating PM's until blocked, name call me after every single post I make, just trying to discuss my favorite hobby, and this has been going on for over two months now. His actions are still in, as of this morning, blatant violation of N4G's terms and conditions of use and despite having reported numerous instances of his harassment with the use of the "report" button, only 2 of the infringing 26 comments over the past two months were actually dealt with.

I've now taken the issue to the mods directly but aside from "We'll talk to him," his harassment continues unabated. How many users have been run off this site in the past because of unfettered harassment like this? How many more gamers who just want to talk about their favorite hobby will be chased off this site after I've finally had enough?

The mods need to step in and clean up the Gamer Zone. That's the whole problem right there. It's so bad now the task is monumental and I don't know if the mods or admins have the stomach for it. It's a shame, because the N4G community is generally a great place to talk about gaming, it's really only a few bad apples.

Edit Below: Thanks for proving my point! There are some who come here to discuss their favorite hobby, there are some that are here just to belittle others for expressing opinions. I can't own both consoles but have a preference? Get over yourself. There's nothing "stealth" about what I do. I've always been upfront about my preferences. And I've never said Killzone 2 was better then Halo. Don't put words in my mouth.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion but I don't know where you get off saying I'm anti-Microsoft. Simply because I prefer my PS3 doesn't mean I'm "anti" the other console. I'm quick to offer up opinions regarding Sony because there's so much genuine misinformation floating around out there that is easily disproved and I think people who perpetuate this type of misinformation on these sites do a disservice to all gamers. If people were spreading misinformation about Microsoft I'm just as quick to put them in their place as well, however it happens far less often.

Gears of War and Fable II are two of my top games so far this gen. XBL is a fantastic service but I don't agree with the fees involved. The 360 is a great console at a fantastic price but Microsoft continues to mishandle the hardware issues. Simply having criticism of a company doesn't somehow make me "anti" that company. There's been plenty of things Sony's done this gen I didn't agree with. I think they botched the launch, they weren't up front with why the controllers didn't have vibration, Home hasn't been handled very well, advertising has been lackluster, BC shouldn't have been taken out...etc. I've been just as vocal about those issues as well.

Sorry, but I refuse to conform to your attempt to label me as firmly in one camp or the other. I can be fans of both. That's what gamers do.

Other members seem to have observed similar traits in certain individuals, as I have.

No wait... I'll say this:
I will continue to call out lies, misrepresentations, misquotings and half-truths by ANY and ALL members of n4g.
If someone is observed to continually do these things, I will call that out as well.

Recently, a n4g user derogatively and slanderously referred to me as being 'anal', ... Then that person proclaimed that they were reporting me to the mods for namecalling!

When I call out individuals for lying, misquoting and misrepresenting the facts, i do this in the spirit of community.
There is no way I am trying to harrass anyone, and that accusation is itself, a form of harrassment, which is now being reported to the mods.

My behaviour is, in fact, a valuable service to the overall n4g community as it improves the dissemmination of truth (not lies) on our forum.

If a mod disagrees, then please, present your viewpoint.

I don't know too much about Gaming Sites like this, I'm not really into it either

I know about Joystiq.com, but is more like ruled by analysts than people who enjoy games, you can't say you like X console or you get pointed as a fanboy (lol), Ign is good but it has banners everywhere that crash my Ubuntu FireFox all day (lol) and neogaf is ruled by fanboys in disguise or really annoying cry babies IMO

I've said this sort of thing often in the N4G contributor forum: tying an article's "heat" to the number of comments it receives results in a lot of poor quality flamebait garbage making it to the front page. An article can get to the top banner because a hundred people write comments stating that it's terrible. That sort of a system just tells people that they're better off just running their mouth and being as incendiary as possible rather than writing well-researched, coherent commentary.

If you think back to when the ps3 launched, those american news outlets relentlessly bashing the non-american product, the ps3, pretty much soared the whole fanboy nonsense to the level it's at now. What it did was make owners of the already released 360 laugh at and attack the expensive ps3, and owners of the ps3 felt offended and started attacking the 360. Those media outlets are using us as pawns in their games.

everyone knows that N4G is a mixed bag of bullsh!t and candy.but you have to take it for what it is.sure it could use improvement,sure it could have better mods,but in the end,the site works for one reason:

"it brings news from all over the net and puts it in one spot for viewing."

i used to have to go to each site and click on my bookmarks and sift through news to find it.but N4G has gullible people who go out and get the news for me.but they're not journalists.and the news they get are sometimes coming from poor game journalists on other sites.but the news is news.pick your poison.

i've also found that i don't need to go to sites like gamespot,ign,1up,cvg,etc anymore.because they proved that money can buy loyalty.the advertising dollars they got must have been worth it to bash ps3 so early on.a company that had two hit console generations in a row somehow deserved an extreme amount of bashing...blew my mind.

so it was either join the eggheads or become a defender.in the scheme of things,it doesn't matter.but i'd bet there are others like me that decided to join sony's crusade because what they were offering overall was more value than the other two.you just had to buy it(ps3) up front.and that's coming from someone that used to buy all the systems until microsoft showed up.but i have an xbox1.love it.

if that deserves being labeled FANBOY for correcting all the lies,misquotes,misdirections.. ..if that deserves being labeled FANBOY for taking up the cause for gamers in that they shouldn't be gouged out of their money for outrageously priced accessories,paying for online and buying shoddy hardware from a company that started the whole viral hate campaign against sony,then...

When I first came to this site I was amazed at all the negative PS3 articles. So much misinformation and straight out lies or at least half truths being spun against Sony. Sure it had a slow start and it's online wasn't as robust in the beginning but it seemed like most of the US based media wanted to see MS on top of Sony so bad they over exaggerated the good pertaining to the 360 and over blew PS3 short comings.

I've found that the media as a whole is garbage. You really have to dig to get close to the truth no matter what's being reported on but it's sad how political gaming journalism has become. Goes for all from the big popular sites to the small blog sites.

Also Devs this gen have really sold out. Catering to one group over another and lies after lies to the gaming community is astonishing. Good thing for them console players being of a younger demographic aren't that concerned as long as they get to play. Multi-platform games should get equal support across all platforms and lying about a games exclusivity should stop.

It's still a great hobby but we really need to keep tabs on what's happening and why. Speaking up against unethical practices and shining a light on various subjects are the only way things may change. Turning a blind eye to everything will most likely lead to one being duped. It is a great hobby that deserves respect to the gamers who support this industry with Billions of dollars.

11 - Fanboys think they own the company

Fanboys find themselves defending stuff that don't need to be defended. This happens with all systems, but because N4G seems to have more PS3 fans frequent the site, it happens more from they camp on this site. If PS3 game is reviewed and 3 site gave it a 9.5/10 then 2 other site gave it 8.9/10. PS3 fanboys will rant and wave and call the 2 sites bias. I do not see this type of response from any other fan base on the other systems. The fanboys on 360 side try to upset the PS3 fanboy by pointing out any little fault that was in the news against PS3. PS3 FB's will almost always respond with the RROD, but would also point out that their exclusives, look better. I do not own a PS3 and none of the people I hang with do not, so I do not comment on PS3 games. I do however read the articles and view comparisons and screen shots. Xbox is where I game. They got me because the original Xbox caught my attention after not gaming for 8 years. Halo and DOA3 caught my attention on the internet. DOA3 was too pretty to be believed at the time. Anyway I got the Xbox when released and because of Xbox live, and how seamless everything is on the system, I have not felt the need to move to anything else. M$ seems to add stuff to the system that keeps them a step ahead. I don't like everything they do but I like most of it and so do other systems, because they keep adding the same features. I let M$ have their way because I am happy with the way they handle the system. I do not bash the other systems because That does not help me and I could very well move to another system if I loose interest in 360. I don't see that happening this gen.

than not I am entertained by the bickering that goes back and forth between fans of (insert platform here). I know people that are just a vehement in their opinions of the superiority of their choice in trucks, soft drink, cell phones etc; and fortunately for us there are no News 4 Soda Drinkers websites to peruse. I am all for intelligent discourse and would love to see more of it here on N4G. Alas, most conversations I read on N4G remind me of a playground when the teacher is absent. I know what I like, I could care less what someone else likes, but most of the time am amazed at some of the articles that get approved on N4G. I do believe the concept of N4G is a sound one, I just wish there was a delineation between reputable websites and the digital equivalent to the peanut gallery.

17 - when i first joined this site in around 2006,

the place was FILLED with 360 and Nintendo fanboys.

most of the articles were bashing and hating on the PS3, and as a Playstation 3 fan, you couldn't have a single conversation without it devolving into a hate fest on why the PS3 was crap, had no games, had terrible online, that Blu Ray was going to fail like Sony's other formats, how the PS3 was too expensive, how arrogant Sony was, and how stupid Playstation 3 fans were for "drinking the Sony koolaid."

fast-forward 3 years, the PS3 has proven itself, many of the decisions Sony made early on have proven to be very smart moves, and the PS3 has had the most impressive PR and consumer reputation turn around that i've EVER seen in all my years of gaming.

the Playstation 3 fans are no longer afraid to come out and say they are Playstation 3 fans, because the backlash is a lot less now. the PS3 and it's software library speak for itself.

3 years of goading and bashing from the 360 fanboy community have come back to bite them in the ass, and as immature as it is, the PS3 fanboys are relishing the turn around.

you couldn't come to a single PS3 post on N4G 3 years ago without hearing about Haze and Lair, despite games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Ratchet, Uncharted, etc really representing the PS3 well. those games weren't good enough.

even when MGS4, LBP, Resistance 2, and Killzone 2 showed it's actual in game graphics, it wasn't enough on N4G. it was still "Wait Beyond," and "Delaystation," and many more.

now, the tables have turned, and the tide has shifted to the point where there are more PS3 fans on N4G, because some the biggest 360 rabble-rousers like Power of Green and The Mart have fled N4G because they are too cowardly to man up to the fact that all that hate they spewed towards the PS3 was unwarranted. that they were WRONG about the console.

unfortunately, the PS3 fanboy community here on N4G tend to get overzealous and aim their fanboyism at EVERYBODY.

then you have characters like Soda Popinsky and Giant Enemy Crab that love to provoke the fanboys and keep the immature BS going.

there are plenty of Xbox 360 and PS3 fans that can actually HAVE intelligent conversation on N4G, but they are few and far between.

a lot of them are dual console owners, that have learned that the "other console" isn't as god awful as they were led to believe.

the gaming media is to be blamed for the majority of the twisted and distorted views the gaming community has for the current generation of consoles.

they either talked up one console, while sweeping it's faults under the rug, or tore down another console, because they were intimidated by it winning another console generation. they were nit-picky, inconsistent, and lacked objectivity in reviews, letting their own personal agendas get in the way of journalistic integrity and honesty.

THEY were the ones that broke the review system, giving mediocre games 9+ scores at the start of this generation (Flatout: Revenge, an A/A+ 1up? REALLY??), to the point where genuinely GOOD games have to be so far above a 10/10 score in order to be considered quality.

there was a time when an 8/10 score was GREAT. a must buy. now, it's considered mediocre thanks to the perversion of the gaming community by the gaming media.

News 4 Gamers is a great site in that i come here and find a LOT of gaming news i otherwise would have missed ( i tend to avoid major gaming sites like IGN, 1up, Kotaku, Joystiq, Destructoid, Edge, Eurogamer, etc, because i think they are part of the problem of unfair journalism), it's just a shame that the fanboy community (with the exception of Nintendo fanboys; i just don't see them on this site as much)taints it with their idiocy.

i'm not pointing any fingers, because it ebbs and flows, but in 2006-2007, it was a heavy 360 fanboy presence, and then, 2008-2009 has a heavy Playstation 3 fanboy presence.

i own both consoles, and i certainly prefer my PS3, but i'm not going to baselessly bash the 360 just to try and make the PS3 look better.

i don't like unfair journalism, and the PS3 has received more than it's fair share of bias journalism since BEFORE it's release, and even on to this day. that's not opinion, that's fact, backed up by literally HUNDREDS of articles from established gaming websites that point out a distinct slant towards anti-PS3. that's not PS3 fanboys being overly-sensitive, it's simply the truth.

i think they get carried away with certain things, but overall, there IS a feeling of animosity towards the PS3 from the gaming media, and this has trickled down into the gaming culture. Sony has done a bang up job cleaning up the PS3's image by addressing the many many concerns/complaints people were lobbing at it for 3 year running (ie, Trophies, in game cross media bar, video store, lots o exclusives, etc).

17.1 - I strongly agree

I'm a newly registered N4G user, but just a few weeks ago, just being curious, I typed "ps3 games" (that weren't released yet but had early coverages dating around 2006-early 2008) on N4G's search bar just to see how it was back when ps3 had launched. I couldn't believe how many rapid 360 fanboys there were, and funny most of these hatred comments were in the "open zone", not like how we see articles today on N4G where comments are mostly found in the "gamer zone". To see that disgust of hatred compared to a quick rapid change in how many see Sony today, I have no problems admitting I am a sony fan, because clearly they worked hard under those 3 long years to prove people wrong.

Its a sad fact. You go to any site where you discuss games related news and it always turns into a childish dispute about which console is best. This site interested me because it did seem to have some mature discussion about games, but it wasn't before long i realised it's the same as anywhere else. (expects a senseless thumbs down in true n4g tradition.)

I have also realised the site has a huge bias towards ps3/360 related news, anybody would think the wii didn't even exist. And its not even as if the ps3/360 articals are any good, just the usual comparisons and provocative quotes from inside the industry.
