New Age of Empires on the way?

In 2008, Microsoft announced they were closing down Ensemble Studios following the completion of Halo Wars, which caused many to believe that the Age of Empires franchise would die with the studio. At the time, Microsoft denied it was the end of the series, telling The San Francisco Chronicle "we're very excited about the future potential for Age of Empires". Edge later confirmed, in an interview with Shane Kim, that Microsoft continued to own Age of Empires and that they had plans to continue the series.

Today we may see the first evidence of that. Last night Microsoft created a new folder on their press site titled Age of Empires, at 22:23.

Will it be the same without Ensemble Studios? I hope so.

locos8: The teams working on Halo Wars, Age of Empires/Mythology, etc all created their own studios so if it is given to the studio that has the most original team members I'm sure it will!

the attention to detail in the map design and just the love that Ensemble Studios put into the "Age of" series can't really be replaced. i hope the new one will feel like an Age of Empires :-) if not i will personally suicide bomb microsoft's offices

I will not be the same, and probably cant get to similar quality compared to previous AOE games. However I hope they get it close enough.

I hope they base it on Age of Empires 2 if so. Age of Empires 3 was just boring, slow, and sucked ass. It was still fun at times, but not nearly as fun as Age of Empires 2.

It better be developed separately from the PC version.

I swear if the PC version gets nerfed for 360 controls...

Panda, Age of Empires has been on consoles before, plus Halo Wars worked insanely well on console.

Age of Empires is one of the few PC games that is still capable of selling millions, numbers that console games don't achieve that often, I don't it will be jeopardized.

"As of September 2008, Stardock's CEO, Brad Wardell, has stated that the game has sold over 500,000 units, with 100,000 of those being digital download sales, on a budget of less than $1,000,000.[5] It sold 200,000 copies in the first month after release alone"

Not sure if you've heard of Sins of A Solar Empire. But with absolutely no DRM. It speaks volumes about PC gaming. This was Sept, 2008 btw.

No take into consideration that the Digital Download (100k out of 500k) sales was ALL money in their pocket. No distribution costs, no retailer costs, shipping costs, cost of physical media. At $49.99 that's $5 Million dollars of pure profit on digital distribution ALONE. Console dev's with big production costs, advertising costs, shipping & distribution Would kill to see that kind of profit off of 100k sales.

God I hope this get sconsoles too.

Of course they should still go all out for the PC, but the only decent RTS on the ps3 is red alert 3, and then the best on consoles is C&C3.

We need something else!!!

Age of Empires is a Microsoft franchise, I don't think it will see a console release on anything but their platform anymore. The PS2, Dreamcast, etc releases were Japan exclusive IIRC and when Microsoft was not in the console business.

7.2 - Actually....
The ps2 version of empires 2 age of the kings was identical to the pc port, aside from the graphics, which werent bad.It was published by konami in europe, because im in Ireland and iv got a copy right :),
But you are right,Konami only had the right to publish it on consoles before xbox came along...

Great news. Hopefully they make something special and don't gimp this amazing franchise just so it will work on the 360 or something. My dreams will be crushed.

From the looks of the index the new Age of Empires will be a 360 game. I hope this does not mean it would just be for the 360. I would hope it comes out on the PC too. After playing Halo Wars I think RTS games can work on the 360 if you take the time to make them work. So for me I so hope this is true. Because the Age of Empires series is great. So if 360 and PC players can play the game that to me is great news. So I hope this is true and that there will be a new AoE game coming out soon. For both the 360 and PC.

12 - if there is a new age of empires...
I hope they return back to the age of empires 2 style. Having 4 resources on the top right was way more difficult than just managing three items in gold, wood and food.

13 - Bring it on
I do hope they make a new one but dont use some crap team to make it as its a great game and should not be messed around with.

Also it should remain on PC only as that is the true home of AOE i mean come on would you put WOW on a console?????????????
