PSP Go Price Drop – Should Consumers Expect One?
22
PSInsider writes:
"Already pre-ordered that hot device known as the PSP Go? Might want to wait. With the recent price reduction of Sony's Playstation 3 and the prices of competing devices, does it any longer make sense to keep the PSP Go's price point where it is? Signs are pointing to a price "adjustment" right before it's launch. "

I think the price is a bit absurb for one. $249.99 for a handheld? Are you serious? The consoles are now $299.99 for the "top models" and a Wii is $249.99. So Sony basically says, you could buy a Wii or a PSP for the same price? Or for $50 more you could get a 360 Elite or PS3 Slim? That makes no sense. We should "expect" a price drop, but unfortunately we're not getting one any time soon. They really need to rethink their pricing.

1.2 - last year,
my little cousin wanted a Ipod Touch. His parent bought one for him. It was $500 for 16GB.
Clearly Sony is trying to go after that market segment with the "App" store. They will have to market the crap out of it and make it look cool to be able to complete with device like Zune HD and IPhone/Ipod.

1.3 - Oh well
There goes Sonys plan of using a high price portable console to recoup some losses. I know their BS answer to why it's so close to the PS3s price will be "You pay a premium for the flexibility of a portable device..." but it really makes no sense.

1.4 - And Nintendo
has been saying their DSi is the same value prop as an Xbox Arcade.
How about we compare handhelds to themselves and consoles to them selves.
In this light $249 vs DSi at $199 doesn't look so bad.

I just think the PSP Go in itself is kind of a dumb idea. Most PSP owners are not going to get one as they can't play their UMD games on it and why would anyone looking to get a PSP choose a GO over the 3000 when the only real extra the GO has is built in storage space?

Doubt it- it is a test device, not exactly made for profits. They are testing the markets for DD, not trying to make this an entirely viable and profitable enterprise. Sony has plenty of money to spare so they can do this just to get information, however, they won't sell these under cost if they aren't expecting to sell, say, 7 million, since it won't be as widely produced as the older psp. Therefore individual device costs will also be higher, hence the larger cut for R&D.

I found a PSP 2000 Daxter bundle at Rogers here in Canada for $130 and a 16 gb memory stick for $90.
It saved me $30 over a PSP Go, plus I have a UMD drive and a bigger screen.
Good enough for me.

$90 for 16gb is way too expensive. Memory sticks are overpriced as well...

Why? Don't want to pay for it, get a normal PSP-3000. That's the whole point of the GO, not to replace current PSPs, but to offer an alternative.

7.1 - I agree...
The PSP go should be priced around $199.99...and if they get froggy...lower the price of the PSP 3000 to $129.99...and the PSP Go to $179.99....or if they really want to clean up..
PSP 3000...$99.99
PSP Go....$149.99
Both will be sold out in a couple of days if the above happened..
