1.2 - I disagree
If it had a decent director and a GOOD script-writter then Gta as a movie could work

Quentin Tarantino telling the story of Niko Bellic or Tommy Vercetti in Vice City (Miami) wouldn't work? You have got to be kidding...

It woudlnt work because GTA isnt something you "watch" in a movie. Imagine GTA4 as a movie, who the hell would watch THAT? The only good GTA I would watch as a movie would be Vice City which itself, is just a spoof of Scarface.

Well I disagree. Watching Niko Bellic, a man haunted by his past actions being dragged backwards into the kind of life he hoped to escape is an attractive prospect. Niko is good at being violent. But unlike Antonio Montana he doesn't nevessarily take pleasure in that fact. He is the antithesis of a Scarface character.

1.7 - With a good director and script writer you say ?
If i have them, why would i wanna pay rights to Rockstar to produce a GTA movie when i can get my director and script writer to make an entirely new movie ?

Yea, not really. I mean if it was based of GTA IV than maybe there could be some kind of awesome plot to it, and Niko would kick a$$. I think Rockstar would be throwing money away if they decide to go with such thing.

It could work if based on GTA IV. It's cinematic and has a good story to it. Has anyone seen Behind Enemy Lines? The guy in that looks exactly like Nico, haha. Would be a great casting choice:

if they make the movie based on the story and not around the Gameplay it could work

Well that's certainly what they would do. I mean it is a movie after all not a game.

A GTA movie could work, if you can get a good cast of actors and make the story line engaging. It's been hard to make a good movie based on a game but if anything GTA could be the first to be done right.

If you ask me, all video game movies should be done in CGI, that's the best way to do it without the movie looking cheesy, plus you can put all the fantasy elements into a CGI movie that is usually challenging on a movie with real peeps.

I've thought about this.. Naah, nothing of this could be made into a movie.
And it should stay that way.

Well, I disagree. With a great director and great script, it really could. It would have very little relevance to the game, so if they lift GTA IV's story into there - it could work.

Opening narration from Nico spliced with footage of the Bosnian War and Nico seeing people die and such, Nico meets Roman at Pier, Nico realises it's rubbish in LC too, Nico meets love interest etc.

It really could work actually...

I cant understand how they couldnt see this wouldnt work, how can you make a film about gta lol. Though there have been films about driving about and killing people, Transporter comes to mind. though i predict the film would be none of the charcters we have come to know and love and some jerk of a director would think he could make a re-write. good job nipping this in the bud before a poop storm started

Yea it's all up to people really. You'll always have someone disagree with a movie concept such as in this situation, just because a few gamers did not see it fit to make a movie the plans have all been scratched off. While I'm partial on the idea risks must be taken.

I don't think that a GTA movie would work. I mean, look at POSTAL. Its got a funny scene where everyone is shooting at anything/everything, but it's a terrible movie. GTA might have the same outcome.

Ah, but that was Uwe Boll...I don't think you can make a comparison. =p Besides...Postal was enjoyable at times, but yes - very mediocre.

A Gangster movie in a made up world? Name it liberty city and have a few cameos from game characters? Sure it can work, just because huge amounts of violence can be done in the game doesnt mean it has to be done in the film. However you can have stuff like Lazlo on the radio for that perverted twist in a dark world that GTA essientailly is.

Yea, everyone is simply forgetting that it could just be a good mafia movie, except based on a Serbian instead of a Italian.

The main issue is that they want creative freedom to be able to do things. It's the same as Bungie with Halo. While that failure was apparently internal between Fox/Universal, it still wouldn't have helped that Bungie and Microsoft were wanting to approve everything. That's why MS have gone the anime route, because the production houses are a lot more approachable and work with lots of existing IPs.

Agreed.

How the **** can a GTA movie work??

Every 10 sec the car should hit someone, plus, a lot of police death, plus innocent death, plus rocketlauncher on a bounch of pedestrian... THIS is GTA, and THIS can't work on a Movie... even if done with good skills it will fail because criticism will hurt it for sure.

@ Thom
You're pretty much right about that. Those movies are probably the closest they will get to what would be acceptable as GTA. And even if you tried splicing all the good parts of those movies together, it would probably come out all haphazard, which film critics and, more importantly, the GTA fans would despise.

I still believe that if you get the right collection of people to work on it who are willing to work closely with Rockstar, then it'll be a success. Maybe not a masterpiece, but a critical and commerical success.

Don't forget Boyz n the Hood. A GTA movie wouldn't work, because that'd require them to be original.

The stories in these games take a huuuge backseat to blowing stuff up, so I think a movie is a pretty bad idea anyway.

13 - Wouldn't work..
If they made GTA movie it would just end up as a generic action/crime-drama that happens to be called "Grand Theft Auto."

If they were to use one of the lead characters of the games as inspiration for a film, it might work, but a GTA movie would be totally pointless. Especially considering the fact that it's called Grand Theft Auto, but the movie obviously wouldn't be based around the idea of carjacking. It'd be a badly-named Scarface rip off.

Now that I think about it, isn't there an old movie, with no relation, already called "Grand Theft Auto"?
