1 - Yeah...about this article.
High end consoles aren't going anywhere. It's big business..with tons of money to be made. Developing for consoles will become even more enticing with the onset of HD tv's being the standard and the next round of consoles is just about 4 years out...which will be just about the time that the PC games are well past them in high end games...but the 360 and PS3 will still compete with PC's for one simple reason...Only one set of hardware specs for either console to develop for, where as PC devs need to make games that have a wide variation of low end and top end machines they work on in order to get a large buying audience. Things like LIVE and PSNetwork will be even more robust and offer up that easy to use interface which is what gamers want.
Hell, I could be wrong...but for my two cents I think the high end console is here to stay for a long time.

1.1 - Agreed...
In fact, PC's are far more unreliable platform for games in my view due to having to constantly upgrade every 6 months, aswell as having to install games all the time is annoying.
Consoles are far more simplistic and can save you more money if you wanna play the latest games on a console.
Thats my 2 cents.

The man is an idiot, plain and simple.
Both are multicore as stated above, And they are only just getting used to those systems. aka alan wake, lair etc.
His game took so long to come out, and then it was crap.
Point of it is, ps3 and xbox360 don't cost abomb(well ps3 maybe:) and as said will last a long long time.
Also top sellers on pc are sims, err sims, and think theres a game called the sims,ZZzzZZzz
Need old platform games, different genres for pc to make it better for gamers, I myself a pc gamer for years, and years of upgrades am getting sick and tired of the same fps fps, games all the time. RPG's are ok, but we still need much much more.

8 - What universe do these guys live in!
People complain about $600 for the PS3, how do u expect them to pay that amount every 6 months to update a computer? These guys live in an alternate reality or something, were everyone makes millions or something!
If tends to be the trend than gaming is dead! Tons won't go this route, and the industry will end up killing itself! And this Romero guy, isn't he responsible for one of the biggest game flops in history?
You would think the guy would have learned to keep his opinions to himself and his mouth shut!

10 - This article references Romero's quote akin to
another article which failed approval for this website last week.
I maintain the same opinion I wrote then:
"I know this guy holds a lot of weight in the industry but that's a statement bold enough to question whether he's lost his marbles, or whether it's a fabricated quote altogether.
I've been a long-time PC gaming fanatic (though my current hardware would suggest otherwise.) Ever since the 3DFX days, the critical key for successfully running a 3D computer game without hiccups has long relied much more heavily upon a competent (read: relatively EXPENSIVE) video card, and not CPU processing power.
You can integrate as many cores as you want...if the graphics card doesn't have the features or processing grunt to spit the visuals out onto the screen fast enough and as expected, the GPU bottlenecks the entire system to a grinding halt. Sure there's always the option to upgrade GPU's, but if you're looking for graphics comparable to the current consoles, that one component alone is going to cost you AT LEAST $400. They've long been around that price range, and I can't see that changing over the next few years (especially if DirectX 10 ever catches on.)
Let's not even mention inconvenience, driver/compatibility issues, cost of other computer components, user technical skills, economies of scale, and the elimination of the instant gratification that's naturally present in any console.
I predict that PC gaming enthusiasts will forever exist, as well as mind-blowing computer games and systems that are capable of rivalling any co-existing console, but the market is miniscule compared to the enormous, demographically-diverse market that's made up of individuals who prefer to do nothing more than pop a next-gen game into a machine, and start playing instantly without concern, or having to upgrade.
But really. This article has either got to be a joke, or I'm really, really missing something here."

I suggest everyone send the author's editor a note to let them know that Mr. Romero isn't exactly an important industry personality anymore. Maybe people will stop quoting his inane ramblings.

16 - He is correct in highlighting a danger...but
what is important is to establish the likelihood of a given event taking place.
That said I find his initial comments on multi-core processors to be without merit because they lack evidentiary support.
However, his secondary snipet:
"The Wii has the perfect design for a console that doesn't pretend to be a PC and is geared more toward casual gamers than hardcore gamers. The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new PC-like platform that sits in the living room but still serves the whole house over Wi-Fi, even the video signal."
regarding the Wii is and should be a serious concern. Has anybody given thought to what an extrapolation of Wii's sales numbers would look like if they were to follow in the vane of the PS2? I know that doing so is likely statistically invalid. But I believe that we might be looking at the early beginnings, anecdotally and empirically (given current sales trends) of a sea-change in gaming hardware trends.
Let's face it. A slightly more advance Wii (step down from PS3's excellent graphics), with MS's excellent network support, and Ninty's ability to make fun games could seriously tilt things around.
Certainly, though it is too early to ring the alarm bells, but let's not non-chalantly dismiss a person's concerns without some level of introspection.

As pointed out, yes these are good points... but then again, this is also John Romero. Yeah, he's a cool guy, but:
...but he's a primarily PC-based developer, and the PC industry has been having a lot of problems as consoles have taken up the slack.
...and Romero not too long ago was behind Daikatana, one of the greatest gaming failures of all time. *insert cough*
I like Romero and all, but c'mon.
360 and PS3 are doing just fine. Wii is doind supe-magi-tastically.
Not much to complain about there, really.
Now where's the blog that having to pay $6,000 to play new PC games at max settings is destroying that industry?

Good points bombzombie to speculate but I don't think that the Wii will take over. Casual gamers won't purchase the new console 5 years from now. They will stick with the Wii for 10 years. Personally, the PS3 appears to have the games for the large youth audience who's parents won't buy them Gears but will buy them kidie games that are violent in a funny way like Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter. I believe it was a good idea that MS got Banjo Kazooie on board to try and tap this market. It's going to be hard to get 120 million PS2 gamers to move to the 360 but MS will take a nice sized bite out of that. Still, Sony has 120 million kids used to the 360 controller and used to thier PS games. That's hard to shake.

17 - k enough already with the wii!
Yeah the wii is a miracle, bogus!
the wii can do it all, bogus!
the wii is what the next gen is realy about, bogus!
the wii will come out with good games, bogus!
the wii will have more adult oriented games, bogus!
the wii is a fad, TRUE TRUE TRUE!
I bought into that crap, nothing but old crappy ports, unoriginal games, the motion crap is far from percise,
and there aren't any ground breaking adult games coming! Yeah Reggie ur a f'n liar! Get over it, I did!
My little nephew (9) won't even touch the thing anymore, all he wants to do is play God of War 2! And Resistance, wich if my sister ever finds out she'll kill me!
The fad is over, just those that haven't experienced it yet, don't realize it!
anyone wanna buy a used wii, pm me!

18 - hrrm. contradiction of sorts here.
ok, for maximum dumbass effect I'll paraphrase what this guys is saying.
"consoles are doomed because they aren't multi-cored like PC's. The wii is perfect because its a single cored console not trying to be a PC."
Hey great, to not be doomed, you must emulate that which by my own logic is already doomed as well. sweet.
Furthermore the wii is perfect simply due to price. If it were $600.00 nintendo would be having problems as well. And if you thought the ps3 was expensive - building a pc that has as much horsepower as either the ps3 or the x360 would be considerably more expensive than the non-standardized PC, which the market is constantly suggesting you need to upgrade in order to keep using (which is a sad lie).
I was done with PC gaming A LONG time ago because of all the money involved in just keeping current.

19 - hmm
its nice to see this dev concerned about our pockets, however he is right at one thing, "multi core pc's are getting cheaper" but dont count out the home console yet. at the rate microsoft and sony are going we can only see good things coming up. i mean look at how cheap ps3 games are and to say that because of blu ray we will have expensive games, the console just came out and look at the prices of the games
http://www.amazon.co.uk/b/r...
so to count home consoles out is just stupidity and just because quake didnt sell as much as he hoped doesn't mean he has to attack a home console.

Where do people come up with this nonsense? One person says how and why Microsoft is going to fail. The other says the same thing about Sony. Then some PC guru comes in and claims consoles will perish. All of this just compares to the crap talking that boxers do to one another before the fight begins. None of it holds any water.

I know far more people that used to be PC gammers that are now console gammers. And we can actually manage to game on both if there is something on the PC we really want. But the console is just so much easier to use I rather play a game on it even if I take a little graphic hit. I got tired of having to pay attention to make sure my PC could play the game or upgrading it or finding drivers. I like my console.

25 - There may be some truth to this.
Well, I disagree with this "expert" in that I do not think that consoles will go away. I also agree with all of you who pointed out that the 360 and PS3s ARE multi-core machines (is this guy living under a rock and calling himself a games expert?). However, he does have a point that I agree with. Consoles need to stop pretending to be PCs. I feel that Microsoft and Sony, with their respective products, need to stick to how consoles have been manufactured and sold over the years. I'm talking about all these different SKUs for their products. Take MS for example, why do we have to have a Core, Premium, and now Elite. Same for Sony with their two SKU. I bought a Premium 360 because I thought I was buying the best MS had to offer. Now I'm told that the Premium is good, but it is not the best from MS since the Elite is now coming out. That's kind of like how the PC works. You buy a PC with the latest, only to find out that 6 months from when you bought it, something way better is coming out (i.e. graphics card etc). Remember the times when you bought ONE console machine and that lasted you until the next generation of consoles without having to buy NEW and improved versions of the same console? We need those times back. My Nintendo 64 lasted me about 5 years without me needing to update. Do not let these manufaturers full you. They will claim that they are giving us "options" with their different SKUs, but how many of us will really buy a Core system when one of MS's strong points is LIVE, and you need at least a premium to play online? They are hoping that you shell out the $$ for a core, get sick of not being able to use all the best features, and update to a Premium or Elite. If you think about it, the price difference between each machine is only about a month's worth of saving allowance, or for us grown ups, not going out the next weekend. Also, console software needs to stick to the roots. Console gamers are used to sequels, not episodes. I do not know about you guys, but when I hear the word episode, as in half life for the sake of argument, instead of a sequel number such as Halo 2 or 3, I imagine an expansion pack, and not a full game. That's just me, though.

27 - PC Gamers FEAR the Consoles!
"It may be, of course, that his comments are a bit too close to the truth for some console crazies to bare."
c'mon now... console gamers are growing day by day while PC gamers die minute by minute. No one in their right gaming mind will continuously justify upgrading your PC hardware every 6 months just to play a game that equals what a $399 console can do on an HDTV.
comedy dude... str* comedy.
