Splinter Cell: Conviction - New engine details and features

PCGamesHardware: Sam Fisher will be back on the screens in Splinter Cell: Conviction which is said to be released in October 2009. Only little information about the latest part of the Splinter Cell series is available, but Ubisoft just gave us some details on the technical aspects.

1 - So wait...
Is LEAD a modification of unreal two or is it 100% proprietary ?

He is mentioning graphical techniques that were used in the newest Unreal Engine used in GeoW2. I think they are just using Unreal again, but it looks pretty darn good though.

It doesn't look like a traditional Unreal engine game....

The lighting engine is custom and its far more advanced than 99% of other lighting systems. I can't wait to see this game in other environments.

I don't get it. If "LEAD is an evolutionary step from the SC:CT Engine": which is known to run on Unreal 2.5 Engine, then......is LEAD still Unreal tech then?

2.1 - @ FantasyStar...
Its similar to the Too Human deal...but without the lawsuit. I'm not sure how it works out LEGALLY, but basically Ubisoft Montreal has been tearing UE2 apart, and modifying it to the point where they are able to call it their "own". I'm sure if there was a problem with how they do this, Epic would have busted them on this long ago. In car speak, it'd be kinda like buying a brand new Chevy 350 big block, then boring the crap out of it, swapping out all the guts with racing-quality parts, adding a bunch of Holley bling, etc., and dropping in a Ford T-bucket. When you're done, its really not a "Chevy" engine anymore.

Chevy doesn't make 350 Big Blocks, all of their 350's are Small Block.. But I see your point. Kudos for knowing something other than video games though. :P

4 - LEAD is basically
a heavily modified Unreal 2.5 engine. There may have been some type of legal issue at 1 point seeing as how the Xbox version of Double Agent looked terrible compared to Chaos Theory. Might have still been tweaking it.

more so than Uncharted 2 or GoW III?...

not sure what you where watching dude...uncharted 2 kind of unimously took the 'game of E3' and 'best graphics' awards from nearly every site...

I thought Alan Wake was also easily the best looking 360/PC game...the lighting in that was nuts (that flare looked unstoppable)...but whatever...conviction did look good too...

@6 Agreed...

"more so than Uncharted 2 or GoW III?.."

^Not hard to figure he was including those games too. He is right, no doubt about it the lighting and the detail/sharpness in Splinter cell is unmatched. Not sure what videos you've seen.

Uncharted 2 has hand drawn looking textures that look painted giving it a patchy cartoony look and doesn't have lighting anywhere close to splinter cell. GOW3 is not even worth talking about due to it being not even close to the level of these games.

6.3 - @ Really Duh
KZ2 is still top notch when it comes to lighting, although I do admit Conviction does look really good.

And since when has a "cartoony" feel on a game stopped it from having amazing graphics? It's astonishing, you guys find every fault in these games whether it's to boring to the "patchy hand drawn textures".

Last I remember...U2 won E3's best graphics and Overall best game. Just sayin....

Splinter Cell looked pretty good, but let's get serious here. It's no match for Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 on a technical level (cartoony or not). Some of the textures looked rather weak, and the polygon counts aren't anything spectacular.

It looks to have somewhat similar detail levels as, say, Assassin's Creed: http://xbox360media.ign.com...

You're going to tell me that screenshot looks even CLOSE to Uncharted 2? I didn't hand-pick the worst screenshot I could find either, that was the first screenshot listed on IGN for Splinter Cell Conviction.

They ripped it apart and added their own superior code/sub-engines and improved other 2.5 function beyond Unreal 2.5's original capabilities.

It uses LEAD, their own proprietary engine.

"We're using our own engine, LEAD, which is an evolution from the engine used in SCCT"

9 - @really duh to be fair Uncharted 2 does have more effects on the screen as well as levels with bigger scope
but then again we haven't seen a glimpses of the later levels as well as some of the daytime areas of conviction what I can say however is lighting,Textures and player models look better then what uncharted 2 can produce

10 - It's sad when OTHER gaming companies are taking
EPIC's own graphics engine, and doing better things with it... than EPIC themselves are...

Main 360 titles Im excited for are L4D2 (I love the competative nature of the online, not to mention mowing down millions of zombies) and Im mostly stoked for Alan Wake... hopefully 360 has its own survival horror fanchise on lock, and I wonder if it'll turn into a series?

If Alan Wake is a trilogy or whatever, expect to finish playing that series sometime during the 2030's.

11 - I remember the first splinter cell
I only plsyed that one and now that I look at this one I wouldnt have even known they were connected to the same franchise if someone didnt tell me. They went in a strange direction and lost their identity. I dont know why this was ever put up against Metal gear solid 4.

11.1 - Adapt.
Yes, you certainly sound like you know what you're talking about. After all, you played the FIRST Splinter Cell, never mind there have been THREE since then and the story has grown and moved on with big changes.

By the way, Ubisoft explained in detail why they have changed direction with the gameplay of this specific franchise.(they basically want more options to play with) Before, Sam was restricted to a few abilities and options, now those aspects have expanded vastly.

All in all, you don't know what you're talking about. You practically admitted it yourself. Don't critique a developer for adapting and changing things a bit to keep a franchise 'fresh'. Oh, and S.T.F.U. about MGS, we don't need any more fanboi bait around here.

Sorry so harsh.

ambient occlusion is great but hopefully it's noticeable, and crowd management sounds great as long as it looks randomized and not cloned like in prototype, if this game delivers it'll be a GOTY contender for sure.

16 - ONLY REASON I STILL HAVE MY 360.
Microsoft better keep me interested because this is only reason I still have my 360 ( If it still works ). After them releasing no games and stealing some Multiplatform titles, I am not happy with these guys.

They can suck my d*ck if they think I will buy into their sh*tty Xbox Live again and they can also rethink their sh*t if they think I am going to buy any Multiplatform games on their system. They are a disgrace to the gaming industry with their sh*tty tat.

This game does look good but would have run better on PS3 I can guarantee that with full 1080p resolution and no frame rate drops. Hopefully Sony buy atleast one game out, make it this one for next time.
