David Jones "miffed" at Microsoft's Ruffian decision

Realtime Worlds CEO, David Jones, has admitted to being "a bit miffed" with Microsoft over its decision to award production of the Crackdown sequel to Ruffian Games, a start-up in the same town that's already drawn away some of the company's staff.

Realtime, which is currently in full swing on production of APB for an "early 2010" release, has struggled slightly to fill its expanding workforce, and the effect of a new, potentially attractive developer on the doorstep is something that Jones is somewhat concerned about - even if he does wish the team success with the new title.

2 - As long as Ruffian does a good job.
i really enjoyed the 1st, & the addition of 4 player co-op I feel will enhance it. Plus it looks as if you'll be dealing with more powerful enemies this time. People get tired of seeing Superman deal with humans. Put him up against someone worthy of his power.

5.1 - Relax
It's just that he is upset that Microsoft had went ahead and started working with another developer studio for a Crackdown sequel instead of letting them get done with APB and making the game themselves

"Scotland-based developer called Ruffian Games has been founded by key Crackdown-related employees, including lead designer Billy Thomson" - gamasutra

I have no worries Crackdown 2 is in good hands.

i read a lot of comments on kotaku and it appears that most of the core team that worked on the first Crackdown is now with Ruffian. so this guy with RTW is jealous i suppose. i'd rather Ruffian be working on it than RTW if it is true that most of them worked on the first one. seems appropriate that they should be.

i'm not worried.

What he said didn't seem too jealous or anything, he seems a bit concerned that because they've only just started up that it might negatively affect the game.

he's silly maybe if apb came out on 360 which it was supposed to but now it appears its not MS could have waited to let them finish that, and then start work on the sequel but forcing fans to wait 3 years while you work on another game thats not even coming to the 360 doesnt seem to smart at least on MS part

Well, gee, David....maybe if you hadn't gone out on your own to start work on a huge MMORPGTPS...without even securing proper capital first I might add...before you expressed any desire to do Crackdown 2, half of your team wouldn't have left you to form Ruffian, and you WOULD be making the sequel.
Furthermore, jumping to a project that, as of now, has no definite future on the 360, wasn't the smartest of moves, if you intended to keep a working relationship with MS.

Fvcking whinyass idiot...

9.1 - publihers need to listen to their userbase a lot more
you can probably add publisher ignorance to this, it wasn't until recently that MS expressed a desire to continue the crackdown franchise.

also, things like dual voice tracks on jrpgs. people have been asking for this feature for years and in a recent interview with SE, the interviewer asked this and he replied "do people want this?"

there are lots of examples like this...like some of the choices Epic made for the returning maps in gears2. i was amazed clocktower, fuel depot, and war machine didn't make it in, yet tyrostation and subway made it in? it wasn't until after this that they actually went to the message board and asked what maps the userbase wanted.

I think this guy is just afraid of the economic recession! After APB is going to suck is finger, and in my point of view APB is not going to be the sucess they are aspecting, mainly because of the lack of single player! This game is not going to came on top was a stand alone online experience!A failure and the lack of work got to be is problem right now i assume!?He's speech says all!

Oh dear. I knew Dave Jones wouldn't react too good to that. Jones was basically the lead designer of Crackdown, now imagine this, you get GTA taken away from being your baby and then you're promising new IP Crackdown, must hurt quite a bit really.
Still MS should've organised Crackdown 2 about the same time that Gears 2 was agreed upon with Epic. Lets hope Ruffian to a faithful job.

I didn't even realize that Realtime Worlds wasn't involved in Crackdown 2. It has now shifted from being a "must buy" to a "rent first."

15 - His Comment on Project Natal
He was saying that the Sony approach may be a little better, because you have something to hold, but I think he is missing the point that, with Project Natal, you would have the ability to use a real object as your controller. Say that there is a sword fighting game. You could use one of those wooden practice swords if you wanted. Natal is reading your body, so it doesn't matter if you are holding something or nothing. Hell, you could use one of those totally sweet plastic pirate swords from Halloween if you wanted to!

It seems like it's in very good hands:
http://www.ruffiangames.com...

Crackdown, APB, Too Human [yeah yeah, whatever..] and fable2 staff all involved.

Looks like the key folk from APB left after their work was really done.

This studio was deliberately built for crackdown, since MS wanted it and realtimeworlds couldn't take it on. If RTW are annoyed they should only eb annoyed at themselves for not freeing up the resources to take it on.

I look forward to cd2, and hope they really crank it up to the next level of uber.
