CryEngine 3 equal to CryEngine 2 'medium' settings, reveals comparison video

Joystiq: CryTek's newest, shiniest piece of tech is CryEngine 3, which will be put to use in the upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Crysis 2. While the first footage of the console versions looks remarkably similar to what you'd get from a PC, a closer examination reveals how top-end gaming PCs are still capable of rendering better graphics with CryEngine 2. According to tehdaza on YouTube, "CryEngine 3 running on console hardware is about the same as CryEngine 2 running on 'medium' settings." The look of the console versions can be recreated on the PC by using low textures, high shaders and object geometry and medium on all other settings.

well its not like the engine, or game, is finished for either console yet...

look at the differences between the different builds of killzone 2 before it released...nothing was close to the final build...major texture upgrades, major particle effect upgrades, etc...

if it was the developer saying this, or a comparison of the final game...it would have a lot more credibility...but this is just some guy playing with his PC settings in comparison to direct feeds of the CE3 tech demo released months ago...

LOL i built a great rig for crysis 1, beat the game and never played it again...though i still have my store bought copy.

i will probably build another pc for crysis 2, not just for the game, but because i like the new pc hardware thats coming out soon.

you would think, that after putting all that effort into giving us high resolution rocks on the floor....or trees that can be cut down with bullets, that they would actually make the game more fun to play?

I guess thats why consoles own pc's in the gaming aspect, even though pc's can clearly push more polygons, all the fun and unique i.p.'s are on consoles..

the retarded xbox360 hardware is going to limit the ps3 version from running at it's best potential. Of course the crytek is going to say they're equal across both platforms, but we all know the reality. microsoft and their POS hardware, and don't get me started with natal and their f@kin wall ball games, then milo WTF?, instead of showing you live demonstrations, they show you Video of A scripted video they made, c'mon, if thats all it takes to fool you ,even i could pull off a natal out of my a$$ with the right video editing software. GTFO!

huh, I got kinda addicted to Crysis for quite some time. I finished Crysis after a couple days of marathon play and the frustrating finale, then moved right on to warhead. Even though I knew how it would end I loved every minute of it. I can't wait for Crysis 2, granted I WILL be playing on PC cuz I'm not so delusional as to think it'll look just as great as the first on the consoles. That and I need to get my money's worth out of this damned computer...

Most of what's shown is from the tech demo. A lot of the stuff being used is probably being reused from Crysis, and isn't designed with console strengths in mind.

I'd wait to see how it looks down the line.

with the exception of the Ps3 exclusive games PC has every other game with superrior graphics and more control options , Diablo 3, starcraft 2, every mmo, only on PC's. I think this game will be the best looking Multiplat out there, and the game is fun name one that is better FPS for single player (I'll admit the multiplayer sucks).

Looks good but there's no enemy A.I no action and no intense gameplay.

It just looks like a HYPER version of the far cry 2 engine, even the barels are similar.

Far Cry 2 looks good during the day but I wonder how it will hold up in the night.

Uncharted 2 looks good, but I have to admit this looks slightly better.

says the halo fan. I can't see much of a difference between the two, but I prefer the animations in Uncharted 2, that and I find the textures nicer to look at. I like the lighting and particle effects in Crysis 2 though, we'll need to wait for the games however to know which will actually look better as there's plenty of time to still work out the kinks in CE3

So you telling me Naughty Dog are testing out there game and improving there game IN A BETA. They dusgust me! I got the Beta for free knowing that beta's usually contain some bugs glitches and aren't perfect and yet it is... WAW. I can't believe this.

Naughty Dog listens and hopefully they'll add a hardcore mode, but I don't see why people are moaning... Gears 2 take 2 clips if not more to kill someone... but what's that fanboys? They have armour in Gears 2, well that's true they are effectively a tank EXCEPT in the head because armour is for cowards! Atleast Nathans ability to survive is explained within the game... He is too sexy to die, Sully is too cool to even understand death. Elena will die or get injured in Uncharted 2 after spending soo long with Nathan she is now going cold turkey... and cannot survive.

A beta is to test your code and iron glitches and bugs and network code and make minor gameplay changes. The main core of the game is there, it will not change for any reason. So if you do not like it now then much will not change once the game launches. Just making the comment cause all the whiners talking about "But it is a BETA". He didnt make a comment that he didnt like it cause it restarts every 30 secs or that half your team drops when the match starts. I think he was talking about the actual gameplay not the issues being that it is a beta.

It does look better than something like FarCry 2 but I knew Crytek would try and sell console owners something less while telling them it's so much more.

Oh well.. I'll just keep renting their games if I get around to it. Nothing about any of there stuff is making me go OH I WANT IT!

compare final builds and i might even watch the comparison.

medium settings are fine with me if the gameplay is there.

games are becoming more and more like movies. i want gameplay over graphics just like i want a good script over awesome CGI. crysis was just a pretty game that got boring fast. unfortunately i must be in the minority in both cases. everybody cares about graphics. no matter how good the graphics are, they still come second to gameplay.

11 - There's not just graphics going on...
During heavy parts of the game there is a good amount going on, lots of enemies, fast movements. The physics engine is pretty ridiculous as well.

This video is just showing comparisons. Although I still wonder how the console versions are going to fare when there is heavy load.

Just have to wait and see.

And this engine is far superior to Uncharted 2, sorry.

Aside from the vastly s1ttier GPU's consoles have than a decent PC, the 512 meg of memory is never going to have mind blowing textures and effects.

I love consoles btw, but my PC has AMAZING graphics, and it is nowhere near top end either.

Internet, burn stuff, photo editing, office, just about everything, and of course games. Games that are great.
So don't make out paying good money for pc gaming is a waste, coz it's not.
The modern PC does everything and plays games too. (better than consoles in the case of FPS)
Let's face it, most people have some form of computer.
Money WELL spent.

You know what? Who cares? Everyone always b*tches about the price of a computer, but you know what you have to factor into console prices now adays? An HDTV, that's going to run you up another $400-600 at least to at least begin to match a PC. And even then an HDTV doesn't match the resolution you can find on PC monitors unless you're spending over $1000 and in that case, you could just spend $1000 and get one of those 2560x1600 30" PC monitors. Uncharted 2 doesn't even look that unreasonably good, it's insultingly linear and it's textures look what you'd expect a console game to. If you made the same exact kind of environments as Uncharted 2 on the PS3 using Cryengine 3, you know how it would look? Probably exactly the same.

People don't know anything about the actual hardware of these consoles. They don't realize there's massive ram and GPU differences between a high end PC and a PS3 or 360. A PC is going to have 20x the memory of a console.

Yeah seriously. PC games looks better than console games? Shocker!! Here's another shocker, the vast majority of PC games are using less than 50% of the PC's processing powers, some even less than 20%.

In general most PC games are so poorly optimized that they run on pure processing prowess of the platform alone. So when you see some screens of a game looking better on the PC, that PC isn't just more powerfully, its 3X to 4X times more powerfully than the said console.

Makes a lot of sense really, the so called "nextgen" consoles were conceived around, what, 2004 and went into production in 2006-ish? Now you compare that console tech to the PC that rolled off the fab in 2008-2009, then factor in the bi-yearly tech turns of the PC...LOL no wonder there's a tangent between the image quality.

I told you so. When I saw screenshot and Demo on Consoles I was like "Thats way less graphical then my crysis on ultra" and you call me fanboy like always (Well I been called PS3, X360 and PC Fanboy haha).

PC will always have best graphics and gameplay. Nothing beats Keyboard and Mouse (Espically in RTS or FPS). You can connect both PS3 or X360 controller easy with PC. You can get any 3rd party control if you don't like.

Also, only kids b!tch about PC Price. My PC Can run Crysis on everything max it can (Except resolution) with no hip-up. My PC with everything (Speakers, Monitor,Keyboard mouse blabla) costed me circa 1000 EUR. I have GTX 280 too in PC. I use my PC for everything. Video Editing and Graphic Design (Job). Making Music for my band. Recording the music. Burning Stuff. Entertainment. Keeping track of my spendings and income. Etc Etc.

Now how much will a Console + HDTV that doesn't come near resolution of PC Cost? Not much less then my PC unless you buy a crappy small HDTV with no 1080p, and PC offers so much value for money.

For the other idiots saying "I want to play games in my living room comfortable" you can. Wireless Joysticks for PC cost less then console joysticks. All you need is a decent videocard that allows Dual Display, and connect your PC to your living room HDTV. I don't even have a DVD player. I put DvD on PC and play it then go to living room to watch.

LOL @ the Cry Engine 3 vs the PC Crysis on ultra comment. Forget about ultra, Crysis Warhead for the PC on high settings looks a hell lot better than the console's Cry Engine 3. In fact Far Cry 2 on the PC at high settings looks a hell lot than that too.

It all comes down to texture resolutions and native res. The console simply can not match the PC in that regards, and as far as this generation goes they will never be able to.
