Square Enix Now Mainly A Portable Developer

When looking through a list of Square Enix games that have been released or are in development on their official Japanese website, it was actually quite surprising to see how things have changed so dramatically in one generation. Squaresoft, Enix and then Square Enix were all strong supporters of the Playstation 2 and other home consoles such as the NES and SNES. However, this generation has seen a stark change in Square Enix's process and they've gone completely against their strategy for the previous 20 years.

I wonder how good/badly that's affected their bottom line. Anyone know of the current stats for the revenue from the portable games?

Doesn't surprise me to much to see them largely focussed on the portable market. The games are cheap to produce in comparison and Japan in general seem to have a love affair with gaming on the move.

Well I think it was a good move, especially with the longer dev times and larger dev costs associated with HD gaming it was a good move to support the DS and PSP mostly and I don't think they've put a bad game on the portables yet? I mean even Chocobo Tales is enjoyable.

That's fair enough, but it's odd that none of the other big Japanese developers are really following suit. Either Square Enix is stealing a march on them, or Square Enix is going in completely the wrong direction.

Good point, it could go either way. With the ever present and growing portable market(150 million units so far) compared to home gaming(100 million) it seems like the portable market is going to be becoming a much more significant market and if Square Enix manage to get to the top of the chain good for them.

If however portable games aren't profitable enough, or the ipod/phones/free games take significant market share it could end very badly.

I think I prefer portable gaming all round though.

FF13 takes a lot of people to make! Lots of people! Then on top of that people still have to keep putting out their other games also. The team has to be pretty strained. They recently expanded to CA and yes they are hiring also! If you got the skill CA has the bills.

Seriously all of you guys forgot about this

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. It seems like it's getting close to being finished also. Now all we would need is a secret of mana also multiplayer!

Smart edit. What you originally wrote was plain offensive.

Edit: Ah I see you moved it up to the top with slight changes. Attention seeking much? Reported.

Edit 2: I see you thought better of it again.

Pretty interesting, it comes as no surprise that they are backing the DS considerably in terms of the volume of titles they've put out on it especially in Japan. I imagine we'll probably see a shift in this trend albeit maybe not drastic sometime towards the later half of this year and 2010. Then again I don't really know how much of a line they have on the portable side either for this year and next year.

They have a fair few games coming out still, two Kingdom Heart's games, Agito and the new Parasite Eve.

Don't forget Dragon Quest IX. It's set to be epic.

@V: Me too, I think it may be one of the biggest releases for the DS, especially in Japan where they'll be qeueing all night for it.

6 - Square Enix
The most dissapointing developer currently of this gen. Until they take their heads out of their a## and start deveoling worthwhile gamesfor their original fanbase(you know, the ones who actually MADE them who they are now)then they will remain the most hated devs of all time.

With the way their going, they'll easily take that title fom EA in no time. Well done Square loosers.

6.1 - Your damn right
Squeenix should start developing games for the wii where squeenix's real fanbase is, ah the glory days of when squeenix used to make good games, chrono trigger and ff6 are still unrivaled, there games have just gotten worse since they abandoned nintendo.

6.2 - Well I actually think EA have been one of the better publishers this gen
They really have surprised me. Fifa has been fantastic, same with fight night, and they have taken risks and tried to make some new genres(mirror's edge) and in general they have really improved the quality of their games(dead space). In fact they are probably the best multiplatform this gen.

Edit: finalflash Square enix didn't make the games you mentioned, squaresoft did and all final fantasies(12 was still a very good game just a significant let down after 10)/kingdom hearts/dragon quests since then beg to differ.

6.3 - And that is when this rpg fanboy saw nintendos lack of rpgs and switched to sony's console, that actually had some fing rpgs
@ 6.1 Clearly you never played parasite eve, se's main install base is on the wii lmao, no they are on the handhelds and the ps2/3.

But seriously the nintendo consoles have been getting the freaky offshoot final fantasy games since then, have you been in a cave?

Give me a new parasite eve for ps3/360 and i'll be happy.

Well. it is hard to make a cool looking game and make it use the full 50G space of a blu-ray disk.

I bet that with a like FIVE remakes of FF(s) for the DS or PSP SE made more money then what FF13 will give then when it arrives and it probably cost 100 times more then the remakes for the portable Vgs.

To make games for this gen cost too much money and some times also a couple if years to develop a game.
I can imagine that FF14 will probablly not come before 7 or 8 years after FF13 is released.

8 - Considering the fact...
that Final Fantasy dissadia sold like a "million copies" in Japan alone and the sells of FF Crisis Core....

not really suprising.

9 - This isn't exactly new or a surprise.
Square has been bringing in revenue from portables for a few years now. This has been Square/Enix main revenue stream for quite some time while they focus on FFXIII. How does this affect their bottom line? This has been their revenue for atleast 2 to 3 years now. Without it they would have been in very bad shape. The reason for their annual loss was due to a DS game shipping late. Had it shipped on time they would have had a good year financially.

The games released on consoles this gen have been published by Square/Enix for another developer or they have been made on a third party engine for quick turn around. Square's main focus has been on FFXIII which is why the rants against them have been unsubstantiated at best.

I think its crazy they haven't released 1 ps3 game. Although Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant didnt get very good reviews, some love for the ps3 would be nice.
