Nintendo Set to Disappoint at E3 Again

GameStooge's Jonathon Howard, a longtime Nintendo fan, scoffs at Reggie Fils-Aime's promise of an "awesome" E3 this year.

Excerpt: Remember last year when Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America, promised an awesome E3? Remember how we naively believed him, and then were treated to Wii Music? If you need to be refreshed, look at the video above and enjoy watching people who makes six-figure salaries gyrating on stage like idiots.

This is why when Reggie says that Nintendo "always go into E3 with a very high bar, wanting to satisfy not only the core fans but also ourselves," and "we're hoping to do a much better job this year." I just don't believe him.

I have a feeling that everything exciting coming out of Nintendo this year has already been revealed: Spirit Tracks, and the Wii Motion Plus. That at this year's E3, we will again see Nintendo trying to get core gamers excited by products more suited for the casual market. You know, the people who have no idea what E3 is.

1 - I don't think so
It was one bad E3. And remember Nintendo wanted to show Kid Icaris but the game wasn't ready.

Hopefully we'll get a look a Wii Sports 2, a teaser for the next Zelda and Mario.
Cosmic Walker should be there too. Maybe they announce Soma Bringer for the DS in America.
F-zero, Kirby, Star Fox could be announced too.

I think Nintendo understands if they have another E3 like that for them it won't be forgiven by its fans.

I agree they wanted to show something but look at thisway, e3 last years was meh. biggest highlight was ff13 going on 360( which is suppose to be normal so its not suppose to be wow) so like M$ say its suppose to be big this years cause they got the biggest booth and also because sony are confident and show something big. And nintendo said that zelda and mario were in production and i bet they got more trick in there sleeve
so in resume this years e3 will be huge for all three just enjoy the show

E3 should be better this time around. Don't close the door on them just yet, Nintendo did say that they were disappointed with last years E3 performance cause they admitted they didn't focus a lot on showcasing core games. So, we'll see how they do this time around. There's more potential for a better show because there's more to draw from this year since there's more Wii core games in the pipeline compared to last E3.

If Nintendo actually, you know, showed off third party titles like Microsoft does (ie. Final Fantasy XIII, Tekken 6, GTA4), they'd excite people. But they ONLY show off first party titles, and games like Conduit, etc, will get the short shrift.

Reggie is the consummate executive. If his lips are moving he must be full of it, but then again what executive isn't?

Frankly, I don't think Nintendo cares at this point. They may say they are providing for the hardcore like last year when they said Animal Crossing and GTA on DS should be more than enough (I think I spit milk through my nose when they said that), but they are winning the console battle through soccer moms and friends & family so who needs the hardcore?

Nintendo never made any mention of "hardcore" gamers.I think your confusing that term with what Reggie saying "core" Nintendo user.Apparently he must have been right to showcase the games be did last E3 since everyone of them sold exceptionally well.I don't even no why Nintendo's chasing the hardcore market. It is a niche group at best. They want to have the hardcore but they certainly don't need them.I expect this E3 to be sucessful for the Wii no matter what they do.

That niche group you belittle is what keeps the games industry alive. What you forget is that before the Wii, All consoles needed the hardcore to make money as it is the hardcore that buys the most games. The hardcore niche buys on average at least 10-20 games a year while the casual crowd only buys 1-4 and those are usually gifts at Christmas. The Wii is making a fvckton of money, but the fanbase that kept Nintendo alive up to the time the Wii released is now feeling like an ex-girlfriend dropped like a bag of sh1t when something better came along and is teased with the we'll always be friends line. Those are the people that are disappointed by Nintendo's E3 performances.

It's all a matter of semantics. Core, hardcore, diehards whatever you want to call them the people that live and breathe gaming particularly folks like us on this site that follow gaming news and know about releases months and years in advance.

jmare is right, you will sell probably just as many games to 1 hardcore gamer as you would to 3 or 4 casuals and not just during the holidays.

Nintendo has been doing well with the casuals because the Wii is officially in fad mode like Sea Monkeys, the Rubix Cube and Cabbage Patch Kids, however once a fad runs its course it usually doesn't sustain that momentum and something else needs to keep it going or it will die down. This is where Sony/MS have the advantage. The hardcore aren't going anywhere. They will always be there and Nintendo should not turn their back on them just because they are sitting on a pile of money from the casual market.

You can already see it happening. Wherever I go, Wii's are now plentiful when the last 2 years they were hard to find, Japan is selling more PS3's then Wii's month to month, there's not alot of news stories about it anymore and people aren't saying hmmmm.. what is this Wii thing, maybe I should get one (whatever it is). Nintendo needs to now change gears to keep their momentum and move into the next stage as the fad dies down.

Sorry but Jmare is completely wrong.. Casuals have ALWAYS ruled gaming. Not even going to bother posting every single thing that proves him wrong. I'll post this one thing as proof. Rugrats PS2= 6 million copies sold. God of War2 barely hit 2 million. 6 million for a CASUAL game vs 2 million for a core title...

All the proof you need to know he is wrong.

Oh wait one more thing to prove you both wrong. Wii gets played more than any other console AND has the highest software sales... Geez guys do you even try to understand how things work? I mean I dont even have to look anything up to know your both completely wrong and dont have a clue.

If you weren't a moron you would realize that casual games sales primarily occur a Chritmas, which is a period of 2 months. The rest of the year is carried on the backs of hardcore gamers. What do you think keeps those companies in business for the rest of the year, happy thoughts? So rugrats sold 6 million copies, know what that proves? That a lot of parents and other relatives bought it for little kids to play. But you don't take into account that that was probably the only game purchased by those people for the year whereas the people that bought GoW most likely bought other games as well. The people that buy the most games are the one who help float the industry the other ten months out of the year. If you weren't such a retarded troll you might actually realize the point I was trying to make.

Yeah all those reports are wrong. Nielsen issued a correction that stated they mislabeled the graph.

Here's Kotaku's post on that, the articles was even up on here.
http://kotaku.com/5205249/n...

Also, it is kind of related to that hardcore gamer s buy more software thing. The wii sold the most third party software last year and it also has the highest attach rate of the 3 consoles(it beat the 360 :O )

Attach rate: http://wii.ign.com/articles...

And if you choose to go by vgchartz the wii has more million sellers than the ps3. The wii has 47 according to vgchartz but iwata reported at gdc that they have 75 third party million sellers.

Not to mention isn't iw funny that all these little blogs and websites are the ones claiming poor sales for third party games and mature games on wii but publisher's aren't comaplaining and most publishers have the sequels to those games that bombed coming.

Oh and about nintendo having only announced casual crap. You guys as hardcore gamers are just about as dumb as the casuals you bash.

Have you forgotten about the fall conference nintendo had? The videos are probably up on youtube showcasing all those new ips and games coming to the platform. Go look it up. And aside from Wii Music , Wii fit, Wii sports resort and Animal crossing (not really casual, you should go to mtv multiplayer and see the monthly posted usage stats for the game , i doubt even hardcore gamers play their fps games as much as users play animal crossing) what casual games have nintendo really done on the platform or announced at all? For all those games nitnendo gave us zelda, mario, metroid, brawl, mariokart, excitetrucks and bots, punchout, warioland, super paper mario, mario strikers charged, battalion wars 2, fire emblem and endless ocean(some people find it great some don't)

13/14--4? Nintendo hasn't gone casual yet.

Exactly. Notice how Wii Music is the only thing the haters bring up. Like GTA CHina Town wars was nothing big at all. A once exclusive to Sony portable game coming to NIntendo was not news according to the trolls. Voice Chat? Well they used it as a reason to hate the Wii so of course when it gets announced completely ignore that one as well. Shaun white , Cod, etc didnt matter to them. All they saw was Wii Music because that is all the needed to see to justify their hate for a company they've never supported.

Even this clown wants to pretend to be a long time NIntendo fan in his article but he completely ignores facts which just proves he never supported them.

And it got rave reviews across the board. Yet i havent heard any "fanboys" praise the game or the Ds yet. Plus its back to looking down on the action, which i always liked about the PSone iterations.

The ironic thing is that china town wars was announced at last year's E3

What Nintendo need is someone with a little bit of charisma on stage. Both myself and a friend watched Gamespot's E3 coverage last year and were talking on msn as it was going and we both thought this Reggie guy had all the charisma of a hubcap.

Actually core mario games are released every 4-5 years. Core, and not spin off. How many sports games can EA milk. How many Call of dutys, GTA's, MGS's (since your including spin offs and not core games), singstar's, final fantasy's can they milk.

Everybody does it to proven franchises because they know it will sell. EVERYBODY, not just nintendo. Dont act like their the only one.

"What really worries me is that they decided only to publish Fatal Frame 4 in Japan. What next?"

Ahh is this your first year in gaming....nintendo has done this their whole gaming life. Their is not one generation where they havent done this. So why so surprised>>?

Its actually better now, in Australia we never saw releases of (at the time) chrono trigger...any final fantasy up until FF7!, super mario RPG, Earthbound, sin and punishment (i think the usa never got that one either)....and many many many more.

Im not in any way saying its fair...god no (quite frustrating really), but its certainly not something they have only just started doing...believe me. and on top of that we get dumbed down versions of alot games too even recent ones like manhunt 2 (i wouldnt buy it any way, but still).

Note: australia does not have an r18+ rating for games.

What really worries me is that they decided only to publish Fatal Frame 4 in Japan. What next? I really don't think they give a damn what we gamers feel anymore-they found the golden goose that spurts out pure money and even then wouldn't allow us to have FF4 even with subs in the EU or US-so not even a sop to the people who kept them alive in the GC years.

Maybe KI, maybe a real new LoZ title but mostly tech demos of what's possible with M+ I reckon and maybe firm announcements over where Wii goes from here tech wise. New console or Wii add ons?

Most of it'll prolly be blody DSI camera software games. Defffo loads of DSI content whatever else occurs.

What I really want(like from MS and what I expect, well knmow really, to come from Sony is new games from new IP. I'm not holding my post Pikmin breath for any from Ninty as it's 8 years since a major new franchise appeared by now. Sure we love Zelda, Mario, Samus et al and, yes, a new F-Zero/Starfox/Pilotwings would also be cool. But why not something , like, new in the games Ninty. Not in gameplay options/tech/controls but in terms of a new hero/franchise goddam even genre! But fresh faces and characters would make my E3 from Nintendo.

Sorry if I seem irked but the news that The Conduit MP numbers are on the slide(6v6 is not what I expected or wanted) and if the game/Wii Connect can't handle more than that without death lag then maybe we should stop hoping for a decent Wii shooter online? Alaso where does that leave a complex(onscreen) online MP like MH3 that Capcom intend to charge for over Wii Connect? On curent Capcom form on the Wii and following SSBB online performance hopes in my house are very low!

Cheer me up Ninty-I've bought all your consoles over the years and really don't reckon we'll see any good gaming news at E3 from you.

23 - i doubt it
Last year i think they were only about 1 year into the wii and i think the fact that nintendo wasn't giving enough to third parties before launch really bit em in the butt. Not to mention last E3 most of the next big titles were only just in development. The fact was nintendo just didn't have enough to show. So they showed what they had. The GTA DS title turned out GREAT! I have been playing non stop and that was one announcement that was good last year.

I think 3rd parties and nintendo have had more then enough time to brew up some real quality content for 2009. If they drop the ball on this one then they will have alot of angry fans on their hands. I think nintendo has something to prove this E3 and with the conduit on the horizon, dsi having improved wii connectivity, SD card support finally added, and wii motion + launch date announced. Then nintendo's chips are set for something big and I think We're gonna see some real great steps in the right direction. Perhaps something truly innovative and amazing.

It's just a shame nintendo has their super secret publicity methodology or maybe writers like this one wouldn't suspect the worst.

since it has not been a issue with my friend who owns one. He tells me it feels like it lasts as long as his old ds lite. I think your just blinded by flame articles. I personally want the hell out of one and a loss of 5 hours of average gameplay for the boat load of innovative features that dsi has seems like a good tradeoff to me. It does power an sd card port now. A cheaper and easier flash memory format then PSP has.

How many of the casual audience will buy a Wii 2? Answer: almost none. Core Nintendo customers drive the sales of new hardware.

When Wiis have been freely available lately, no one's buying them. They're not the "impossible to find toy" anymore. At $250, it's WAY TOO MUCH now. Even Nintendo's president has expressed concern.

The problem is Nintendo's setting themselves up to crash hard in the next gen. Big time. The people they're courting now aren't going to spend money for another Wii.
