Blizzard is looking to invite one fan fiction writer from their three franchise communities to visit Blizzard headquarters, dine with the developers, meeting the lore-writing staff and receive a Frostmourne sword.

This is pretty innovative. Blizz is involving the community in a way I haven't seen before! Hmmmm.

I'm more interested in what types of activities they will start once StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 are released... These might have amazing opportunities to see Blizz etc, but the premises are pretty simple.

Valve does this all the time.

They've invited dozens of people to tours of their offices for making mods, making high quality maps, being a contributing member of the Valve/Steam/Source engine community, etc.

Yeah, well, I know that Blizzard previously have invited over fan site webmasters and stuff to come over...

I guess this really is a very good idea, as even though you don't win, you know they offered, and it kind of ties the fans closer to the developing company.

I applaud this, regardless!

Sweet Jesus. I do have some meagre writing skills, but this is really an awesome opportunity. Unfortunately, that would mean a lot of really good writers enter as well.. =(

I guess it depends on what they want to get out of it, really. I mean it's definitely an event they will get publicity for, but it's likely going to be massively hard to judge a good fan fiction story.

Considering possibly 5000 fans send in decent quality stories, that you can't just dismiss due to typos in the title, then take that times 10000 words, which is the max of the contest, and the amount of work hours needed to read it all becomes humongous.

Since Blizz are so famous, it will be hard for them to actually pick the winner...

Ha! To think Arthas travelled all the way to Northrend to get Frostmourne, and he could have just written a few stories and he'd even get free dinner =)

Anyways, even though I tend to despise fan fiction, it's a nice move from Blizzard. Hopefully mappers will also get this kind of attention...
