Real Time Strategy on the console – can it be done?

Itwire: "So here I am playing through Halo Wars on the Xbox 360 and Dawn of War II on PC. Games not dissimilar in theme, but different in how they play. Many said a first person shooter could not be done without the accuracy of keyboard and mouse, but can real time strategy also find comfort on a console platform?"

No, the controller just can't compare to a mouse and keyboard for this particular genre. Unless of course a game wants to package in a wireless mouse and keyboard in which case, ya, it can be done.

2 - Well...
Of course the controls can't compare to a mouse and keyboard or a wii remote, but consoles have had RTS's and "been comfortable" for decades now... It's not like all of a sudden that since Halo Wars is here and FPS only gamers are going to try something else the console is discovering the Real Time Strategy. Good grief...

The only gaming console RTSes could find a comfortable home on would be the Wii.

And yet, it's almost a shame that its online is so wonky. Perhaps that's what's prohibiting the gush of RTSes towards the system. If the online problem could get sorted out, it would be THE CONSOLE for RTSes (PC excluded of course).

Console RTS are gimped by the imput device. Micromanagement is next to impossible, selecting units is just as bad.
