It's official: Square-Enix is officially a corporation hell bent on making money and not a developer focused on making good games. I guess it had to happen sometime.....

I'm sure it's because of their history back in the day and need a push in the western market. Remember Eidos published FF7 and FF8 on PC.

Also, the SE games on the DS were good (The World Ends With You and FF Tactics A2), and everyone was excited about Crisis Core on PSP when it came out.

If that ga.y@$$ japanese developer takes over semi good games (hitman, tomb raider etc) there's going to be heads rolling.

I don't think taking over Eidos means they're tossing Nomura on Tomb Raider. In fact, quite the opposite. SE wants an inside route to Western gaming dollars and I don't think they'd get that by shoehorning Japanese policies on already successful devs who understand what we want over here. If anything, I think they'll try to keep learning first-hand the methodology of how to produce a game that will sell in the West instead of further mangling JRPGs to (badly) suit that function.

That was a long long time ago my friend. These days its all about increased profit margin.

2.1 - True
But if they just concentrated on making new and better games instead of re-releasing older titles or all those spin-offs, then maybe they would see their profits rise. As I quote Field of Dreams, "If they build it, they will come."

In case you handn't noticed. This isn't exactly the time to be sitting around catering to the smaller hardcore rpg crowd. Last I checked they are losing money

Increased profit margin? Tomb Raider didn't even sell enough to keep the company financially afloat.

Maybe Square will push Eidos to make a decent Tomb Raider game again.

Square Enix has been making new and excitin games but they've been ignored. People only buy FF and KH here in the west and all the remakes this gen have been for the benefit of Europe(and America to a certain extent), because apart from FFIV they've been the first time they've been released in Europe.

I feel like a fanboy for defending them.:(

But I feel the need to because they just get criticised unjustly...

In other news I'm glad they're taking over Eidos, I think it will be beneficial and I'm really hoping for a new Legacy of Kain game, even if it's not necessarily about Kain or Raziel.

6.1 - New Games by SE......? what.......?
the only thing new that "they" put out in was Last Remnant and TWEWY(Jupiter Games helped)

Anything else they put out was either port/spinoff/remake(quite a few)

said ports and remakes where mostly handled by other studios.

Spinoff's were mostly in house(CC:FFVII and Dissidia), mostly.

anyway

The Last Remnant, TWEWY, Song Summoner and I think some spin offs count as new, like Chocobo Tales and Dissidia may be an FF but it's a different concept and style. And there's the new game Blood of Bahamut although that may be tied with Final Fantasy.

And the majority of the games they develop stay in Japan(like the arcade games), the majority we see(assuming you're a westerner) are either franchise games or are only published by Square Enix.

My point is though that their new IPs and original ideas don't do well and that goes back many years, ever heard of the bouncer? it's a decent game not great but not bad either did patheticly.

EDIT: I do agree that they seem to be developing less and less and publishing more and more though but it seems to help the smaller studios so that's good.

6.3 - Bouner? yeah i owned
Great looking game but was to short and too repetitive, Decent indeed but like i've stating in other articles when you have 10 year old ports outselling your new IP's(average at best, Go SO4 for breaking that cycle) you need to seriously re-think the future of your company.

Well we're kind of in agreement then. Their (admittedly rare) new IPs just don't do as well as the ports and the remakes which is part of the reason why they make so many I think.

It's because there's a big difference between Square Enix fans and people who play FF(or their other popular series) games. Most people aren't looking for Square Enix RPGs, they're looking for FF/DQ/KH/SO/Mana/Saga which are all excellent series but they are restricting Square Enix from getting new IPs and series out there because they're not really wanted.

EDIT: Where we disagree though is that I think their new IPs are average at worst.;) The Last Remnant's my favourite console RPG of this gen(for now).

6.6 - I agree with you completely but the thing is
Their living off MS handouts(agree or disagree day and date releases do not just fall out the sky), PSP, DS games alone.........nothing innovative, just games we played 10+ years ago

Speaking as a old Eidos fan (Before the whole Kane and Lynch debacle) this is pretty good news. Hopefully this will mean a return of Legacy of Kain series and a new Hitman game. Though SE better not dare f**k with Deus Ex 3.

Well there aim is to appeal more to Western gamers so I doubt they'll mess about too much, although they may let 'em use the Crystal Tools engine for future games(Deus Ex 3 is already in development right?).

Indeed it is already in development. Details are very sparse but it's at least confirmed for PC so far. And you're right about the Crystal Tools thing. Specially since they had been (pardon the pun) retooled for multiplatform development.

They'll be remaining Eidos and Square Enix it's just that on all the legal bits it will claim that Eidos is property of Square Enix or something. They're remaining separate like how you don't get Final Fantasy: Space Invaders(which now that I think about it could be awesome). I'm referring to the fact they own Taito by the way.;)

@Tony P:Oh yes thanks for the bubbles and the compliments.

@V: I think Square Enix could publish it on their own now anyways but if not then yes it does make sense.

Ah okay, I thought their might be a crossbreeding of games and different games coming about due to this. If their staying two different companies then that's cool to. Tough some ideas I'd really kind of like to see pan out :). A platforming Final Fantasy or something? That hopefully won't be to short..
