Rumor: 360 a footnote in Microsoft's CES keynote

It's sounding like the only "megatons" at Microsoft's CES 2009 keynote will be the volume of hors d'oeuvres served beforehand. According to TechCruch, the company will focus primarily on Windows 7, mobile devices and home networking, while Xbox 360 will barely get a mention.

1.2 - microsoft is running low on exclusive titles and price cuts.
We all knew that it will happen eventually.

Multiplatform games are now driving the 360. Not necessarily a bad thing, but having first party studios creating games is always good for long term.

Unless they decided to buy up a PS3 exclusive to go multiplatform (which they're not many left that they can get to go multi now that they really went to THAT well one too many times).

See, I KNEW that practice would come back to bite them on the ass!

With all their 1st-party studios dropping like flies, what CAN they really announce? A $30 budget Halo title rushed out the door to grab sales (Bungie's own words; they want it to be a small spin-off)? GTA4 downloadable content? Halo Wars? The unlikely chance that Alan Wake comes out?

It's becoming more and more difficult to brag about the 360 being the console king of exclusives when...well...they aren't. Sony and Nintendo are continuing to churn out plenty of 1st and 2nd party titles a year whereas Microsoft seems to lose a few titles every year.

Just another sign that the Xbox 720 is soon to come and 360 owners will be dropped by Microsoft. Oh well.

Why is this surprising anyone? It's always been like that, CES isn't a gaming oriented show so the target audience won't really be as interested compared to E3 or another gaming related event.

"We all know Microsoft is working on Mass Effect 2... how come no official announcement? Does that means they are NOT working on it?"

Umm...MICROSOFT is working on it?

Last I checked, Bioware and EA were the people behind ME, not Microsoft.

And the rumors about that game going multiplat just further kills your entire argument's cred from that alone.

EA doesn't have publishing rights to anything in the mass effect universe.

It's Bioware/Pandemic and MGS that work on mass effect. EA gets rights if MGS declines publishing it though (which MGS would have to be dumb to do).

1.15 - @The Lazy One
They published the PC version. MGS only did the 360 one (when Bioware was still independent, the EA takeover didn't happen until AFTER the 360 version released). There's no real indication that I'm aware of (it doesn't say anything on Wiki) as to who owns the publishing rights. I assume it was Bioware before EA acquired them, but it never actually brings that up as to who holds them.

So much negativity on a post about the 360... I don't get it?

It seems like Ps3 fanboys only like their games cause it gives them something to brag about!

Leading up to holiday 2008, Ps3 fanboys were boasting Resistance 2 and LBP as the games that would end all! Shortly after... No one even talks about R2, and there is barely any comments about LBP.

I hope Killzone 2 is that great gem the fanboys are hoping for, cause maybe if they have that, they can stop feeling like they have to compare themselves to the 360!

Ps3 is the most powerful console this gen... so why do you guys feel the need to compare to the 360.

I think we all know 2009 will be the Ps3's year, so I think you fanboys can take a break now!

@Bladestar - You DO know that happyface is an xbox fanboy right? And last time I checked the Sony E3 conference was the BEST this year. You seem to be forgetting MS went all casual this year with the most crappiest games that make me wish I didn't have a 360 :(, if any f***wit actually bought You're in the Movies, they deserve to be punched in the face repeatedly.

Is Sony doing a conference at CES? (Although if they do it will probably concentrate on their OLED tvs)

I'm more than content with what both consoles bring us this year. All consoles have rough years, 2007 was poor for the PS3, 2010 will be poor for the 360, although Halo:ODST and Halo Wars will hopefully live up to the expectation. Luckily I have both consoles so I can enjoy the best of both worlds.

4.1 - exactly,
it's called the CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW.

the Xbox 360 is a piece of consumer electronics, and a very important one to Microsoft, you think it'd garner a bit more than just a brief mention at their show.

a look at what's in store for the future in terms of new features, applications, and software is a must, especially at the start of the new year.

i don't think anybody should be jumping to conclusions about what MS is going to have in store for the 360, but it's a little more than optimistic to think that a company with only 7 first and second party developers has this huge well of software waiting in the wings to unleash upon us during CES, E3, GDC, Leipzig, and TGS.

i would be remiss to not mention that Sony has 29 first and second party studios working on PS3 exclusives, and hardly any of them have been revealed. if there is one company that has a substantial portfolio of unannounced "surprises" for the coming year, it's Sony. Nintendo only has about 8 or so internal studios as well.

MS has coasted on 3rd party support for too long this generation. Sony coasted on 3rd party support during the PS1 era, but immediately began building up their first and second party development houses during the PS2 era. they've continued to increase that support with the PS3, while MS sees content to release studios like Bungie and Ensemble, and cancel promising projects from amazing developers (True Fantasy Live from Level 5), instead of investing in studios that will give them their identity beyond just the tired "shooter console" stereotype that dogs the Xbox consoles.

i own a PS3 and 360, and i want more games to play for my 360 that are exclusive, and really harnessing the power of the 360. games like Fable 2 ARE NOT pushing the 360's limits, and Gears of War looks great, but it's made using an engine that is designed to be multi-platform, and not built from the ground up to push the 360. considering that i have an investment in my 360 console, it's not too much to ask for MS to step up their game, and start building a first and second party legacy.

4.2 - CES is about NEW stuff
The 360 is what, 3 years old? Plus, they've JUST released a massive update for it, why would they be talking about it again at CES? Simply put, there's nothing TO announce just yet, give it a few months and I'm sure there'll be lots more things on show.
What all has Sony announced recently, anyway? KZ2 has been talked about for years, it's nothing new but it's the PS3 game everyone is talking about. Not bashing Sony here, just saying that nobody's really big on announcing anything at this time of year.
Plus, it's only the KEYNOTE and it has to cover the WHOLE of Microsoft's Consumer electronics stuff and Microsoft's a pretty big company with a lot of fingers in a lot of pies. It's really not a big surprise at all that they're focusing on the next version of WINDOWS, you know, that OS that 90% of the world uses (As opposed to what, 25Million 360 owners?).

I never said they can't, I just said that at this time of year, not much stuff gets announced and CES isn't really the place for it. I mean, there's a couple of big events DEDICATED for games, but not really one dedicated for Windows or Mobile Phones or whatever, so it makes sense that Microsoft will glaze over the 360 a bit here.

4.5 - @Figboy
It cost alot of money to set up stuff for a show! CES is mainly about new tech like Computers, cellphones, etc.

Technically, it is not the place to show games, because they may get overshadowed by the new tech, or the new tech might get overshadowed by the games! If anything, i'd expect a few announcements.

With so many high profile game shows taking place throughout the year... it would not be the best idea to throw money at a show like CES.

Also keep in mind, toward the end of 2008, MS said they would have some surprising announcements in early 2009! Which leads me to believe we should at least hear something at CES or at the first games show of the year.

@Dassalfc... CES is about "NEW" technology! All the current consoles have been out for over a year, so they don't fit in.

5 - Strange...
Given how the Xbox 360 has done well over the holiday, i would have thought some of Microsofts focus would have been promoting it even more. Yes, it has specialised gaming shows to showcase the 360, but the 360 is an electronic product, and this is an electronic trade show, so i would have thought one to two half decent things would have been planned.

Although, with Windows 7 being its main focus, its not too much of a suprise to see that getting the main look in, however, with Vista proving to be a commercial disappointment and Windows 7 failing to live upto expectations with several PC experts, maybe it should have concentrated on the positive more, which is only really the 360 at the moment.

That would be the dumbest move in history to throw ANY cards on the table in JANUARY...There is one timer and one time only that you need to shock the world..and that is E3..period..nothing else comes close...

Last year's CES Sony bragged about its consoles sales and talked about Little Big Planet...So why can't Microsoft talk about Windows 7..The great sales of the holiday season and it's Flagship franchise..

Who cares if some random poster pretends to be oh so disappointed..who cares if Anti-X-Box bloggers tease you at a fanboy site..CES pales in comparison to an E3 that will finally bring back the fans..Keep the Xbox a footnote..it won't change how great it did this year

5.2 - i think...
...you seem to have forgotten that E3 isnt the show it use to be, and that CES is a bigger show than what you seem to make out. I agree that it isnt the place to showcase new games or make major announcements, however, i would expect something more than 'just a footnote' considering how well the 360 is supposidly doing.

If it is doing that well, then why not take the opportunity to sing and dance about it at a large consumer show?

Well this is CES, just to remind everyone. There may be new games shown but CES is not really a gaming convention like E3 is.

CES and E3 are two different types of shows.

Edit: Thanks for pointing that out Kyur4ThePain. I hate shows that are represented by letters, I got the two confused. Well I thought the general theme of my original comment still held some weight so I made some changes to it.

I don't know what they'll show, but the simple fact is this. the 360 is the only console MSFT has so to have a seperate keynote specific to gaming the gaming console shows that the 360 is far from a so called footnote. I'm not saying they'll announce any megatons or anything like that, but the 360 will be a centerpiece of at least 1 of their presentations.

10 - Face it 360 owners
This is the true year of the PS3.. I know i know, your going to say "Just wait until later this year because it was like this last year" No actually it wasnt like this last year at all because we all pretty much knew Gears 2, fable 2 and a new banjo game was coming last year, whereas this year we dont have a clue whats coming for the 360.

Im telling you, the 360 has peaked and now MS is kicking themselves for peaking out the 360 already with the Gears franchise. I dont care how much money MS has, the 360 hardware can only do so much and the system has already peaked. its kind of ironic that now the 360 owners are using the "Just wait" argument, when those same 360 fanboys where making fun of PS3 owners last year for using the "just wait" argument.

Oh sweet irony how i love it
