Sony Denies Report of Further Restructuring

Sony said it has no plans to announce additional restructuring actions, denying a report that says the company plans a big corporate upheaval that could see job cuts and sweeping changes to management and manufacturing processes.

"We announced the restructuring of the electronics business last month," said Sony spokesman Atsuo Omagari, Bloomberg reports. "We are not planning to announce further restructuring at this time."

Not that i'm picking a side but Para just pwned Happy, and C_sol just pwned Pog.

You guys really kinda set yourselves up eh?

Thinking before typing may be a bit more appropriate next time ya?

@POG Above, regardless of the manner he did, let me put it more blatent for ya, handed you your A$$.

It is rather funny that you being the Sony hater that you are having your Avatar as one of Columbia Tri-stars (a subsidiary of Sony) motion pictures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

And as for Para's Quote of Happyface, both articles refer to Sony as a whole not it's gaming division alone, reading helps.

I just simply brought forth the fact that ya both got your A$$es handed to ya, quite comical actually.

As i said before, thinking before typing may be a bit more appropriate next time ya? And now that you have shown, PoG, that you didn't understand the article at all, how bout reading it.

1.5 - Sony Electronics "NOT" SCE SONY
Big Rumor and it is not even about Sony Gaming Division it is about the Electronics division that makes TV's. That is why it is not posted under the PS3 news.

http://uk.reuters.com/artic...

they are going to cut something yes.... but it's more cost cuts, not jobs or divisions

"Sony announced a $1.1 billion savings plan in its electronics division in December, but it needs further and bigger restructuring measures to secure growth, analysts have said."

It's hard to restructure when you're in the process of restructuring already.

You don't finish restructuring and then restructure again. That would be daft.

at people believing sony is going to discontinue the ps3 in any way, OMG MGS4 for 360 (comes out on MAC i-phone/touch the complete opposite), that turned just as well as these ps3 is doomed articles will.

It seems i was interested enough to type this, i am a patient man so for me to respond to one of these articles signals that media agenda's on both sides have comprimised gaming news completely

I wonder what n4g would be like to visit if everyone actually just posted REAL gaming news.

4 - Here's the thing about Sony
Just because they're not going to announce it doesn't mean it's not going to happen. You know how Sony likes to do things; they'll outright deny something and then a month or two later whatever rumors they tried to shoot down turn out to be true. It's been that way throughout the entire life of the PS3 thus far, and I wouldn't be surprised if it carried into other sections of the company.

4.1 - What your saying makes sense
but I would expect them to completely overhaul the entire company. If I'm not mistaken Sony has it's divisions work autonomously (if thats the right word) from each other. So, if anything I would expect each division to restructure at different points.

Yeah, autonomous is the right term. Each division of the company works as its own section despite being part of a larger entity.

I guess I'm just used to seeing Sony do things in the matter that I outlined above, but I think a lot of that is due to my main focus being on the gaming division. I'm hoping that before any drastic actions take place, Sony is able to turn a profit on the PS3 and stabilize their losses because of the tumultuous economy.

Sony said, "We are not planning to announce further restructuring at this time," which actually sounds more like a confirmation to me than a denial. If the Times of London report was false wouldn't they have said, "We have no plans for further restructuring at this time?"

6 - DUMMIES
Everyone is restructuring not just Sony, is fanboyism this blind? Plus when you restructure you're slimming down costs, after you slim down cost's you can give your product a significant price cut and still make money off of it remember PS2. M$ could sale a $199 console because it lacked accy's. Expect a significant pS3 price cut.

6.1 - A price cut?
So they can lose more money? Restructuring won't lower fixed production costs. The only thing that does that is economies of scale, selling more product. Sony can't afford to cut the price right now and I don't think they'll be willing to do it just when the PS3 starts making them a little bit of cash in the next couple of months. Stringer has stated before that they're more concerned with profitability than marketshare this time around.

Tuttle is right. Profitability is importrant right now and they need to make a profit from the PS3 before they drop prices.

7 - You'd think this was the first time a company had restructured.
This isn't the first time Sony has had to restructure, and it won't be the last time. What I find interesting based on the London Times article is it didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. In fact, it even refers to the "existing restructuring" plans. Companies going through a phase like this restructure over a period of time, like Sony's doing. On a company like Sony it's like turning around a battleship. The changes need time to work before they assess whether they need more changes or not. Remember, Sony has weathered this global slowdown of the last 2 years fairly well - revenues are still growing, just not growing at the speed that they'd like. They saw this coming and they acted and we won't know if it was enough until at least a year or two more has gone by.

7.1 - Darkeride66, we have a problem.
You are way off. The previous restructuring was pre-holiday. Some companies make as much as 40% of their annual income during the holiday period. Maybe you didn't hear that sales were down almost 20% in electronics. You must have missed the thing about PS3 sales being down from last December. Sony has been struggling in a couple of their other divisions already(Movies and Cellphones). Sony has been moving to get rid of the Cellphone division for awhile.

Everyone need to stop blaming everything on the economy. The companies that are doing the major restructuring are failing because of poor choices. Some had bad luck, but mostly it was poor choices. Sony fits firmly in the bad choices category. You can expect them to drop the phones and move Gaming into the electronics division. The need the consolidate the company and start working as one unit as apposed to a bunch of different parts. The biggest problem Stringer found when he arrived was that divisions didn't communicate. He has supposedly fixed that. Now he needs to cut the dead weight.

Here's an article that sums up Sony's problem. Loses are normal in the first year. The PS3 should have been making a profit at this point. So should the 360. But the difference is Microsoft can afford the loses and Sony can't.

Liiiiez!

Sony ish still doomed! :o

But seriously, anyone wishing for Sony's demise is a damn fool. Restructuring happens all the time and it's crucial especially for this economic crisis.

Hopefully Sony gets their priorities straight so they don't bulk under the pressure.

8.1 - Read Sony's Annual Reports back to 1999.
It might change you mind. Nintendo is in the same economy, they don't seem to be having problems. Except if you consider not having enough people to count all the money a problem. Everything is not about the economy.

Actually just wait until Killzone 2 gets released. Killzone is without a doubt the game that is supposed to sell PS3s. If Sony can't sell an additional million consoles over their average in February, the Hatchet-man cometh.

Then Sony is doomed.

Like I said, part of this is due to the economy.

Nintendo is mainly about gaming, Sony has some kind of market in many different areas of electronics and entertainment, therefore it's logical for one of them to fail or not do well because of the economy but yes they have made some bad decisions, they priced the PS3 too high but when they priced it they didn't foresee this economic downturn as most of the wall st "experts" couldn't see it coming. It's been devastating for most companies, Nintendo is just lucky they're mainly in the gaming industry and the gaming industry while not immune to the economic crisis has held up exceptionally well compared to other industries. The reason the company is doing poorly is because Sony has always been known for higher end products at higher prices and they didn't adjust for this global recession

9.1 - But that's the thing.
Nintendo has nothing but games. And through their decision making, which most thought was and is a joke, they have managed to become a much more valuable company than Sony. They are a top five company in Japan now, right in their with Toyota. Sony has fallen way back.

Sony always wants to be the star. And plain 'ol Vizio, Samsung and Nintendo are kicking their asses. They need to stop being greedy. They should have worked with Toshiba on HD disc and they should not have tried to one up a company with the cash of Microsoft. Every division Sony tried to dominate, they got beat. And now Toshiba will be the main Cell owner, Samsung will own televisions, Microsoft and Nintendo will share gaming.

Sony slow down, catch your breath and come back in 3 or 4 years out of nowhere. Everybody is outplaying you right now.
