No Zelda this Year for First Time this Decade

"For the first time this decade, the gaming world has gone without a single new entry in the long-standing, and much beloved Zelda franchise. Not since 1999 during the gap year between the fabled Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the love-it-or-hate-it Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has an entire calendar year passed by that didn't bear witness to a Zelda game."

Hard to believe there are that many. Then again, these are for multiple platforms.

It definitely is kind of incredible that only two years in that time span have been Link-less

"I think it's funny that the Zelda series hasn't yet gotten a reputation for being pimped out (like Madden of Final Fantasy) when in reality they have been one of the worst offenders.

They've got Japanese coders working sweat shop hours to get these games out annually."

O dont worry Zelda could never be pimped out like madden. Changing those yearly stats must take up a real...sweat.

Windwaker - 2002
Twlight Princess - 2006
Phantom Hourglass - 2007

Since 2002 these are the only "core" zelda games to come out...the GBA/gamecube versions of four swords were spin offs (but good spin offs...especially if u loved link to the past, like me) so i wouldnt put zeldas "pimping" out anywhere near Madden.

Well madden does one a year on a bunch of consoles.

Nintendo does a zelda on alternating platforms... So they still get a couple years to incubate.

That is kinda true. It isn't AS BAD as Madden, but in terms of games as a whole it's a reliable cash crop that Nintendo seldom passes on.

Yeh coz no other machines have rehashes on their systems-

GTA 3, GTA4, GTA Vice city, GTA San Andreas, GTA Libert City stories.

Call of duty, COD 2, COD 3, COD Modern Warfare, COD World at War, COD Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory, Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts

Yep, Zelda's a whore in comparason. Heres the tag line for the game:-

"Run and shoot, again and again with the NEW Call of Duty....Just in a different war!"

shame links crossbow training and four swords had to be tacked on that list. It's amazing the main releases of zelda have had such great play value. I'm eager to see the next LOZ release. It looks like they might be devoting alot of energy into making it great.

It's funny, cause I enjoyed Link's Crossbow Training more than I did TP itself.

Its because Nintendo is making an ass load of cash from the casual market and it doesn't NEED a Zelda game right now

It's funny that when Nintendo doesn't announce new games in their franchises, it's because Nintendo doesn't care about it's core players. When they release them too quickly? They're cash whores. There's really no winning I guess.

Thats the thing, since "casual" gamers are more in the spotlight than ever before they pretend things have changed.

It's just pathteic.

Wii Music was one of the most epic fails in the history of gaming. It's this generation's Power Glove.

I find it weird that suddenly people think that it takes ages for a zelda game.

We got one on the GCN directly ported to the Wii, doesn't matter it was a new zelda. Then we got a DS title.
Now why are we being so spastic?

Meh, i rather have all the great games now, but it takes time i guess.
Plenty of other games to play till that time.

Me either, I would honestly PREFER it if Nintendo let the next iteration incubate for a few more years. Because rest assured, if they release a new Zelda in early 2009 like the rumors say, it will be mediocre.

they have plenty of room for improvement in the zelda series. I personally think the next zelda is going to be the most revolutionary zelda ever.

I VEHEMENTLY disagree. First of all, it's doubtful that the Zelda series will ever get out of the shadow of Ocarina of Time. Second, Nintendo is still trying to convince people that the Wiimote is a great way to control games, so it'll have all kinds of stupid additions to add Wiimote functionality. Like the way Twilight Princess gave us all carpal tunnel with its waggle sword fighting.

@viewtiful: Get your point but maybe if Miyamoto is taken at his word that worry will be redundant. Last I heard he wanted to get the Zelda (and mario for that matter)team working on something really special. Perhaps LOZ has been hampered by the wight of OoT but they(ninty) weren't always. WW and Majora's mask both took huge risks in their own ways and I expect the next Zelda to do similarly. If they revel in the history of OoT(still the best Zelda game and truly a landmark in gaming as a whole)and realise the big changes that the faithful have ALWAYS accepted even if they weren't all universally loved never hurt the series they'll be fine-and we'll get the new Zelda we want and deserve.
As for the controls-I thought they were pretty good for a fist outing but should improve with motion plus into 1:1 swordfights and the like. Really, only a few of the special moves you get taught and sometimes the spin attack were ever really woolly in TP, or caused vague waggling and if they get cut out or sharpened up the only real worries are over plot, dialogue and art direction. Art direction isn't a worry for me as I feel they've always been brave with this and both Hourglass and TP looked great but different to each other. Personally idk whether I want to hear ncp's talking or not-it's no biggie so really as long as the storylines are good and care is taken over controls they won't go far wrong. The thought of Link having real choices to make with actual in game consequences is the way I'd personally like to go with an element(but not a huge one) of RPG style levelling but I really have faith in the series and even if they can't recreate the feeling we all got first playing OoT they've usually been good games(often great)and I've a feeling Nintendo and Miyamoto will pull out all the stops trying ith the next one which we wont see til 2010, imo.

If they add voice, a deep story, and better combat, the next Zelda could rival Ocarina. I personally think Windwaker is the closest to Ocarina status. It was the perfect end to the Ganondorf anthology. It was Awesome. I felt like I was playing a movie. Even my nephew, who usually hates Zelda, liked it. Thats what we need. another like that. And anyone who dissed it cause its look, missed out big time.
